What a great success it was to amalgamate the seniors with the juniors this year! The Club Captain, Tony Joubert was keen to create a ‘Festival of Tennis’, much more akin to the atmosphere of a country tennis tournament. The combined events provided a much more vibrant atmosphere and activity around the Club – it was great to see many families supporting their children and joining the relaxed barbecue offerings in the evening. The views from the balcony were spectacular and also provided a great vantage point to watch some closely fought matches. No more was ‘Youth’ versus ‘Experience’ on show than in the two Open Singles finals. In the Men’s Open Singles, the skill and Tayla Stenta Philip Kloc & Steve Casey experience of Robert Tucker prevailed over the youthful Matthew Leffler in a superb game of tennis. In the Ladies Open Singles it was reversed, with the powerful ground strokes of Tayla Stenta overcoming the skillfulness of Kerrie Douglas. This makes three in a row for Tayla while Rob has managed to hold the coveted Norman Brookes Trophy five times. This year we had a record number of entries – 260 across both the senior and junior events. This meant the utilisation of both Friday nights David Hepworth, Mary White & Antony Hearnden Norman Gengoult-Smith & Rob Tucker prior to the two weekends, as well as some very busy courts (and some very tired players!) by the end of the Championships. Next year we will be looking to increase the numbers even further but may introduce mid-week matches. One of the new events that was particularly successful was a Ladies Social Doubles event, introduced at the request of the President Susie Strangward who actually won the event with fellow committee member Di Hepworth. These two evenings which were held in February and March attracted more than sixty players with some extras joining in for the barbecue. With guest tennis fees waived it has proved a popular and fun event.
