INTERESTEDINTERESTED ININ BECOMIBECOMINGNG AA MEMBERMEMBER OF THE CATHEDRAL OF PATRICK? Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. A person becomes a member of the Catholic Church through Baptism. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Confor- mation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain mini- mum requirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how the Cathedral of Saint Patrick looks upon them in relation to parish membership.

 ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eu- charistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance en- velopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, parishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial contribution. If a parish- ioner gives online or prefers to place cash in the offertory basket, an empty Mass attendance envelope should still be placed in the basket with "I attended Mass" checked.

 RECEIPT OF THE SACRAMENTS. The third & fourth precept of the Church states the faithful must ensure prepa- ration for the Eucharist by the reception of the sacrament of reconciliation at least once a year, and the reception of Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter season (CCC #2042) and join in fast and abstinence during Lent.

 SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH. The fifth precept of the Church states that the faithful have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to

their abilities in a regular, identifiable and meaningful way.

14th Sunday of Ordinary Time

The last verse in today’s says of Jesus, “He was amazed at their lack of faith,” in reference to the reaction and response He received from his own WEEKEND OF JULY 1 neighbors when He returned and preached at the synagogue. Might the Lord say the same about us? REGULAR OFFERTORY Faith is based upon trust, and trust is at the core of the readings this Sunday. Loose Cash & Checks $1,282.00

Envelope Cash & Checks $7,652.00 Jesus says in today’s Gospel from the Book of Mark, “A prophet is not without honor except in his native Online Giving $6,311.53 place and among his own kin and in his own house.” TOTAL $15,245.53 Jesus understood, as did both Ezekiel and Paul in the first two readings, that rejection is a price that those Weekly Budget $15,865.38 who believe must sometimes pay. It hurt Him for sure ACTUAL TO BUDGET -$619.85 to be rejected by people He considered friends and people who were His neighbors. SECOND COLLECTION Debt Reduction $480.03 One limitation that we all face is a sense of doubt and even mistrust by some of those who are close to us. Mission Appeal $2,944.00 As indicated in the opening, Jesus expresses amaze- ment at the unbelief of those close to Him. That is a limitation and a frustration we all sometimes face. The question is, “Where is our belief?” and “Where is our trust in God?” Jesus never seemed to be amazed at what He saw in terms of the wonders of creation. What amazed Him was the lack of faith among peo- ple. In spite of the rejection He experienced, He did not hesitate to continue what He felt His ministry was. We need to have that same determination, knowing full well that God is with us always.

OF THE WEEK Sunday, July 8: St. Killian—Bishop and Martyr St. Killian descended from Irish nobility, but he entered the monastery of Hy where he eventually became . Killian was consecrated a “travelling bishop” by Conon, and he went off spreading the Gospel in East Franconia and East Thuringia. During his missionary journeys, Killian was able to convert the Thur- ingian Duke, Gozbert. Learning that the Duke had unlawfully married his ’s widow, Geilana, Killian told Duke Gozbert that he must abandon this illicit marriage. Geilana found out about this instruction, be- came angered, and had Killian and his companions murdered. The skulls of Killian and his companions are still preserved today, covered in jewels, and carried in procession for veneration on St. Killian Day. Monday, July 9: St. Veronica Giuliani—Virgin and Mystic St. Veronica was born in 1660 in Mercatelli, Italy. She began to receive visions as early as three years of age. Through- out her childhood, she was known for her love of the poor. Veronica joined the Poor Claires, and became a on July 17, 1677. When she was received into the order, the bishop said to the , “I commend this new daughter to your special care, for she will one day be a great saint.” In 1693, Veronica began to receive visions that the Passion would take place in her soul. Starting in 1697, she experienced the stigmata. At the request of her confessor, she kept a daily diary. The devil frequently tried to tempt her, and to dissuade her from writing, but she overcame his evil efforts. Ve- ronica became abbess in 1716. After her death, a cross was found on her heart. Her body remains incorrupt to this day.

Tuesday, July 10: St. Victoria—Virgin and Martyr St. Victoria was born in Picenum, Italy in the early 200s. Together with her sister, St. Anatolia, Victoria was ar- ranged to be married to Roman Pagans. Originally hoping to convert her soon-to-be-husband, Eugenius, Victoria was persuaded not to go through with the marriage by her sister. Instead, she decided to live a life of holiness de- voted to God. Their fiancés became angered, and they had the sisters imprisoned. Victoria suffered great abuse at the hands of Eugenius, but she remained strong in her faith, even managing to convert the guards who were keep- ing watch over her during her imprisonment. Eventually, Eugenius turned her over to the authorities, and she was stabbed to death. According to legend, the man who put her to death contracted leprosy, and he died six days later. Wednesday, July 11: St. Benedict—Abbot Memorial St. Benedict was born around 480 to a wealthy Roman family; the twin of St. Scholastica. After witnessing the sinfulness of his fellow students, and not wishing to be drawn into that lifestyle, he abandoned his education and began to live as a in the mountains of Subiaco. One day while Benedict was in a cave, the devil tempted him with a beautiful woman from his past. Benedict threw himself into a thorn bush, and would not be tempted again. began to seek out his leadership, but found him to be too strict. Other monks then started to follow him, and it was with them the Benedict established the monastic community of Monte Cassino under what became the “Rule of St. Benedict,” which dictated communal living, daily prayer, study, and manual labor. Thursday, July 12: St. John Gualbert—Abbot Born in Florence, Italy around the year 993, St. John lived his early life in sinful pleasures. After his brother was murdered, John tracked down the killer on Good Friday and drew his sword to kill him in revenge. John received a vision of our Lord on the cross, and he forgave the man who killed his brother. John then visited a local monastery, San Miniato del Monte, and became . In time, he discovered that the monastery was not living up to the Christian ideals, so he left and founded his own monastery in Vallombrosa, Italy in 1038. The new order that he founded would be called the “Order of Vallombrosa,” and it would follow an especially strict form of the Rule of St. Benedict. John frequently turned down requests to be ordained a priest. Friday, July 13: St. Henry II—Confessor Optional Memorial St. Henry was born in 973 as the son of the Duke of Bavaria. Upon his father’s passing in 995, Henry assumed that same title. Henry was elevated to Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1002 after the passing of his cousin, Otto III. Henry was married to St. Cunegundis, but by mutual agreement, the couple lived a life of chastity. Despite being a powerful emperor, Henry lived a semi-monastic life devoted to prayer. He helped spearhead reforms in the Catholic Church by promoting the appointment of worthy bishops. He also encouraged Pope Benedict VIII to in- clude the “” in the Creed, which states that the Spirit proceeds from both the Father and Son, rather than just the Father. This would later result in the Great Schism. Henry founded the diocese of in Germany. Saturday, July 14: St. Kateri Tekakwitha—Virgin Memorial St. Kateri was born in 1656 in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon. At four years of age, she came down with smallpox, along with the rest of her family. Her parents died, and she was raised by her uncle. Kateri refused to marry, and she converted to the Catholic faith at age 19 taking the name “Kateri” in honor of St. . She then made a vow of perpetual chastity. After her fellow villagers began to accuse her of sorcery, she travelled north and resided in a village at Sault St. Louis. Kateri was very devout, and frequently practiced mortifi- cations such as putting thorns in her sleeping mat, fasting, and burning herself. She regularly prayed for the con- version of her fellow Mohawks. On April 17, 1680, Kateri came down with an illness and passed away.
