GEELONG FALCONS FOOTBALL CLUB

PLAYERS AND OFFICIALS HANDBOOK

INTRODUCTION:

After 22 years the AFL Victoria TAC Cup Competition has attained a high standard and players from this competition continue to be keenly sought by AFL Clubs in subsequent National Recruiting Drafts.

The TAC Cup is the first truly statewide football competition and involvement in it means the chance to play with and against the best juniors in Victoria, NSW, ACT, Tasmania, Queensland and the Northern Territory. In 2014, the Competition will involve 12 teams, ensuring the TAC Cup remains the pinnacle competition for elite youth football in Australia.

As a member of the Geelong Falcons you have many opportunities to improve your potential as a footballer and person. Also you have the chance to represent the Geelong/Hampden regions with distinction and continue the standard of excellence set by earlier Falcons players over the last 22 years. In 1992, the Geelong Falcons won the AFL Victoria U18 Premiership and were again victorious in 2000; were Grand Finalists in 1994 and 1998, Finalists in 1993, 95, 99, 2003 thru 2012 and Preliminary Finalists in 1996, 2001 and again in 2013 after finishing Minor Premiers at the end of the 2013 Home & Away season. Since 1992, the Falcons have had in excess of 100 players drafted plus "rookies", thus earning the mantle as the #1 club in Australia at producing players for the AFL draft/AFL. As a playing member of the Geelong Falcons, you have the responsibility of upholding this tradition.

Your involvement with the Geelong Falcons as a player, coach or staff member will test your commitment, courage and desire.

GEELONG FALCONS FOOTBALL CLUB MISSION STATEMENT 2014

The Club’s Mission Statement is the starting point for all development activities and is applied as a reference marker and guide for all decisions that are made at the Geelong Falcons Football Club.

 To provide a club environment of excellence where parents and staff are able to provide the development squad players (U18, U16 & U15), with the best opportunities to reach their full potential as footballers and young men.

 All squad members are responsible towards enhancing the culture and club atmosphere which ultimately contributes to the excellence of our programs.

 The club framework (players, parents and staff) work together to provide our players with the best opportunity to develop physically, mentally and emotionally to become better footballers, students and citizens.

 Senior players become role models to the rest of our development squad players – including our U16 / U15 squads.

 All associated with the Geelong Falcons promote the notion that team goals are more important than individual goals. When the club is playing well as a team through adhering to team disciplines and rules, individual potential is invariably realised and personal goals achieved.

 Individuals that do not uphold the club’s Mission Statement and values will be counselled, but if no response or change in behaviour occurs they will be dismissed from the club.

 The Geelong Falcons will always have an open door policy to those players, who for discipline reasons leave the club, but want to return and adhere to club rules.

 The Geelong Falcons management will always be HONEST with AFL recruiting managers in terms of discussing a player’s strengths, weaknesses, character, family background, school and work ethics as well as social behaviour (drinking, smoking etc)

Geelong Falcons Talent Manager’s Message to Players

The Falcons are the No.1 development program/club in Australia at producing players for the AFL. We are No .1 on all Key Performance Indicators [KPI], including:

• Numbers drafted • Percentage of players drafted who play AFL [80%] • Awards won • Premierships • All Australians • Brownlow Medals (Ablett, Bartel). • Norm Smith Medals (Hodge, Bartel). • AFL Captains - Primus, Ling, Ablett, Hodge, Brown, Maxwell, Boak and Dangerfield. • 50+ players on AFL lists – 20+ play AFL each week = a senior team).

As a club, the Falcons aim every year to:

• Win the TAC Cup Premiership • Make the top 4 • Win as many games as we can like any other club.

We won our last Premiership in 2000 and have been in the finals every year since then, but our core business is player development.

As a player entering our program, our sole focus is to make you the best player and person we can. Your responsibility (to yourself) is to give 100% to your development.

Congratulations on being invited to an AFL Academy Program - give it your best and be prepared to make the sacrifices necessary to reach your FULL POTENTIAL.

CLUB OBJECTIVES

The objectives for the Club are simple:

 To promote Australian Rules Football in the Geelong/Hampden Regions.

 To field a highly competitive TAC Cup side each week that will compete successfully against the best junior players in Victoria, Tasmania, NSW/ACT, Northern Territory & Queensland.

 To develop players to a level where they will be sought by AFL Clubs in future drafts. 100+ Geelong Falcons players have been drafted – 5 players drafted in 2013 - making the Geelong Falcons Australia’s most successful AFL development program.

The aims of the administrative staff are:

 To develop the best possible training, coaching staff and facilities.

 To administer and oversee a program from Auskick through to the AFL Victoria TAC Cup team that provides opportunities for players to develop into potential AFL players.

 To promote our Club to other football clubs and people throughout the Geelong and Hampden Regions through the media, meeting with people, offering whatever expertise we have and by listening to the suggestions of others.

 The coaching, medical and training staff will prepare the players thoroughly for the TAC Cup competition with the aim of making players more familiar with the requirements of playing AFL football.

Aims for the individual player (see Mission Statement page 4):

 To develop the physical and mental toughness to perform consistently well in a high standard of football.

 To develop the best possible skill and fitness levels.

 To display a “desperate desire” to succeed.

 To show loyalty, honesty and respect when dealing with other players, coaches and staff.

 To develop self-discipline and consistency with training and players.

 To make the most of the opportunity.

 Whether drafted, or have played regularly with the Geelong Falcons or not – that you leave the Geelong Falcons knowing you have given it your best shot - no regrets!!

 To adhere to the Geelong Falcons Code of Conduct on Page 15.

PLAYER RESPONSIBILITIES

Training  Players are required to attend ALL training sessions as notified by the team coach.  If unable to train, players must notify the Football Manager - Dean Pearce, Talent Manager - Michael Turner or High Performance Manager - Levi Turner at the Geelong Falcons Football Club office. For Hampden-based players, they are to contact Paul Henriksen – Hampden Co-ordinator. Phone numbers are supplied – see staff list.  Injured players must report to Head Trainer, Adam Flett at Highton Reserve unless advised otherwise by the Club Doctor or Physiotherapist.  No player is to leave a training session without first seeing the coach.  Players are to wear training jumpers provided by the Club and are responsible for the cleaning and care of their allocated jumper.  Players are to include runners, boots and swimming trunks with their football gear for each training session.  Club colours are blue and white. It is preferable that training attire reflect our colours in that as a squad, at all times, the Geelong Falcons look like a professional unit.

Match Day Dress  Players must wear the appropriate gear as supplied by the Club to each game.  Talent Manager - Michael Turner, will notify players of match day dress and gear requirements.

Club Equipment  Care must be taken when using the facilities at the Club. No equipment is to be removed or damaged and players will be liable for the cost of replacing damaged or missing equipment.  We have the best facilities of any AFL Victoria TAC Cup team thanks to the refurbished training & administration base at Highton Reserve – the 2010 redevelopment cost approximately $1.3m. Respect your environment as you train in a professional AFL Victoria atmosphere.

Injuries  Injured players are required to attend for treatment as requested by the Coach, Match Committee or Head Trainer. Computer records and history cards will be kept. Responsibility will not be accepted by the Club for any injuries unless this procedure is adhered to.  Medical costs are the responsibility of each player and family. You and your family are advised to carefully read the MedicalInsurance cover details enclosed.

Medical  Medical treatment and physiotherapy for injuries sustained while training or playing with the Geelong Falcons Football Club will be provided by Club medical staff.  Should a player undertake any treatment other than that prescribed by our Medical Officers, the Club will not be liable for any financial obligations for, or as a result of, that treatment.  Any expenses incurred for the treatment of other illness or injury not related to football are the responsibility of the player concerned.  The Club has insurance cover with JLT Sport (Page 10 is a summary of the cover provided). However the cover is limited to $3500 per player injury and AFL Victoria will not be responsible for medical expenses above this amount.

 You are strongly recommended to join a Private Health Fund (eg: GMHBA/Medibank Private) to cover you for private hospital expenses should you require an operation, as this will cover the “gap” between the Insurance cover and the fee charged by the surgeon. If you do not have Private Health Insurance you will have to meet the gap costs yourself.  Ambulance cover is also strongly advised -$50.00 per single.  Any injury must be reported to the Talent Manager before insurance claims can be submitted.

Dental  It is recommended that players use mouth guards when playing. Mouth guards may be ordered from the Club - see staff for order forms.

After-match  Players will be required to attend functions with opposition teams as requested by the Club - with parents encouraged to provide a plate for the players and staff at home game after-match / award functions.

Football Boots  Football boots can be ordered from De Grandi Cycle & Sport. All brands of football boots are available at 10% discount price via a sponsorship arrangement.  All squad players and staff are issued discount cards from De Grandi Cycle & Sport. We encourage all to support our sponsors. 10% discount off footwear. 10% discount off clothing.

Sponsorship The Geelong Falcons management have worked hard to secure sponsorship packages that will improve our overall program. We ask you to be aware of our sponsors and if possible support them (a list is attached).

If there are any contacts you may have regarding sponsorship, the Geelong Falcons Talent Manager - Michael Turner would appreciate a contact number. Any player organising a gold club sponsor ($500) will have their membership waived for the season.

Racism of any nature - as per A.F.L. Policy . Under age drinking - T.A.C. Major Sponsor – Speed Hurts program . The taking of non-prescription drugs or illegal substances – AFL Drug Policy . Smoking – VicHealth - Major Sponsor of AFL Vic development programs. . PARENTS

Support from the parents is essential if we are to establish ourselves as a Club successfully representing the Geelong and Hampden areas. Any ideas for fundraising, sponsorship and entertainment or offers of assistance are most welcome. The Club and staff will do all they can to provide an appropriate environment for the development of the boys as footballers and as growing men - but we need your help.

It is also important to have faith in the coaching staff and allow them to carry out their match day duties without interference. The temptation to talk to the boys during matches can be distracting to the players and the coaching staff. Certainly discuss football with boys as often as you wish but trust the coaches to do the job on match day.

We look forward to meeting you all this year, and should you have any queries please contact us at any time. Club information can also be accessed from our website: geelongfalcons.aflvic.com.au
