Magazine Letter #LiveLent: Care for God’s creation. I look forward to Lent every year. After I moved to , I joined a group in Holton and subsequently reaffirmed my confirmation vows in St Mary’s, , at the Easter vigil service in 1994. I still remember stepping into a bigger picture of faith and belief and owning the promises in a new, stronger way due to God’s grace guiding our learning, study and fellowship in this study group. So, I truly associate the season of Lent as one in which to take something up: responding positively to the gift of God’s son, alongside a meditative reflection on the sacrifice made by Jesus for us all. Making the most of this important time of preparation before celebrating anew the joy of our risen saviour at Eastertide, I can heartily recommend joining one of the Lent groups offered in the team. However due to my shifts, I’ve often found group attendance difficult and so have accrued a collection of Lent (and Advent) books. Some are good enough to revisit. This year our diocese is recommending one that encourages us to “#LIVELENT - for God’s Creation” in keeping with our call to be Good Stewards; to live in greater harmony with God, neighbour and nature, caring for creation. The book by Ruth Valerio is available for personal study, but the diocese has produced an ‘Environmental Lent Challenge’ booklet to allow us to think about one small action each day that, incrementally and corporately, can and will make a difference. Details can be found at:- https://www.cofesuffolk.org/uploads/Lent_Challenge_Booklets.pdf Study, Be Challenged, Pray, Get Involved, Give 5 positive ways to practice our faith during Lent. Revd. Southwold and Reydon HMD Planning Group Reflections on Holocaust Memorial Day in Sole Bay

On January 27th 2020 some two-hundred people attended the local Holocaust Memorial Day event including school children, representatives of voluntary, civic and church organisations and members of the public travelling from all over the Sole Bay area. In fact the theatre at Saint Felix School was full to capacity. Our small planning group shared a determination to honour those who had died in all genocides, and also to gather together like-minded people to promote a better understanding of tolerance and acceptance in our local communities. The audience remembered the lives of those lost and stood together to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. A key member of our planning group was so determined to be there that she left hospital so that she could attend the event, and then she returned immediately afterwards. A Jewish speaker agreed to provide a Hebrew Bible for a Christian speaker. Each of the two hundred people present had their own reasons for being there, but the real testimony was that they wanted to stand alongside each other for a common purpose. In a society where hate crime has doubled in five years there can be no better cause than to reject those negative influences in society that are intended to divide us. We are most grateful to all those who attended. Our photographer and Saint Felix School provided their services free. Some speakers waived their expenses and others shared their travel arrangements to reduce costs. Perhaps the real spirit of the day was demonstrated in their actions, and in the commitment of those who stood silently together to work towards a safer, kinder future for us all. Chris Ure Southwold and Reydon HMD Planning Group see photos on inside back cover --- A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and James 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. “If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, ‘Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.’” Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, “James, you be Jesus !” 4 Sole Bay Team News The Return of the Bohemian Choir The Bohemian choir are delighted to be returning to Suffolk for the third time this spring. This year our theme is legend and lore from the Suffolk lowlands and the Bohemian highlands. We are adhering to our usual format of stories interspersed with classical choral pieces. The Bohemian choir consists of twenty singers, all students of the university of Liberec in Bohemia, in the north of the Czech Republic. Each year a theme is created, then stories and music are chosen and woven around the subject. The Bohemian choir has now forged close links with schools, churches and universities in the Suffolk area. This year we arrive on the 29th March and leave on the 5th April. We are singing in , Norwich, , and . The choir is managed by Doctor Jana Konvalinkova and Christopher Muffett, both teachers at the university in Liberec. The students are drawn from many faculties, with the majority studying in the pedagogical faculty. After every concert we encourage the students to mingle and speak with members of the audience. The repertoire of the choir is varied and includes choral pieces from traditional and contemporary composers. There is something for everyone! This year we are singing at the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, Wangford on Saturday 28th March at 7.00pm, St Margaret‘s Sotterley on Sunday 29th March at 6.00pm and on Saturday 4th April at 7.00pm we finish the tour in Holy Trinity, Blythburgh. We are all looking forward to sharing our music and stories with you. Afterwards we hope you can find the time to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat with our young students. 7 Felix of Burgundy: apostle to East Anglia East Anglia is blessed with a rich Christian heritage. Just two examples: at more than 650, Norfolk has the greatest concentration of ancient churches in the world, and at 500, Suffolk has the second greatest density of medieval churches. And that is not to mention all the churches in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. And it all began with one man, back in 630 A.D., a bishop named Felix. His name in Latin means ‘successful’ and ‘happy’ – an excellent description of someone who brought great good and stability to this beautiful corner of . Felix came from Burgundy in France. At some point he was consecrated bishop, and went to Canterbury, to see Honorius, the Archbishop of Canterbury. In 630 the Christian king Sigebert returned from exile in Gaul to rule the East Angles, and Honorius sent Felix along with him, to evangelise the people. According to local legend, Felix went by boat, and arrived at Bablingley in Norfolk. Felix may well have known Sigebert back in Gaul, for the two men worked exceptionally well together. Sigebert settled Felix in , which became the centre of his diocesan ‘see’. Then, with the support of Sigebert, Felix set up the first-ever school in East Anglia. He brought teachers up from Canterbury to staff it, and the school became, according to Bede, the place “where boys could be taught letters”. Felix had a fruitful ministry to the Anglo Saxons for 17 years. He preached Christianity, encouraged the school to grow, and did a lot of other good. All in all, Felix brought the love of God, the good news of Jesus, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit, delivering “all the province of East Anglia from long-standing unrighteousness and unhappiness,” according to Bede. Certainly, the people came to love Felix. When Felix finally diedon 8th March 647 or 648, he left the Christian faith firmly embedded in East Anglia. Six ancient English churches are dedicated to Felix, and bears his patronage.

On the side of the box it read: ‘Easter is the festival of chocolate and loveliness’. I began to wonder – was it right for the manufacturer of an Easter egg to change the meaning of a religious festival in this way? Imagine the outcry if this had been done to Christmas.

I searched for an Easter egg which mentioned the Christian story of Easter. It became clear that out of the 80 million eggs on sale there was not a single manufacturer who was willing to mention the religious aspects of the festival. So, I started The Meaningful Chocolate Company to manufacture the UKs first ‘Real Easter Egg’.

For it to be a ‘Real Easter Egg’, it had to reflect the Easter themes of hope and new life and do three things – have a copy of the Easter story in the box, be made from Fairtrade chocolate and support charitable causes.

The Real Easter Egg was launched in 2010. It was a struggle, as the supermarkets turned down the idea. It was left to churches and schools to place orders and fund the making of The Real Easter Egg.

Ten years on, more than a million eggs have been sold, with over 750,000 eggs sent through the post directly to customers. The rest have been sold through retailers and supermarkets.

A Fashion Show is to be held on the 17th April in Wangford Community Centre. More details next month. Our next service in on the 15th March 2020 at 9.30am. All our welcome. Karen Flaxman News and views from around the Community . . .(continued) The Revd Canon Paul Hardingham considers what it means to follow Jesus. The Way of the Cross ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me.’ (Luke 9: 23) These words of Jesus are spoken at a turning point in the gospel. Jesus challenges the disciples about His identity and their commitment to Him: ‘who do the crowds say I am?’ (18). It is at this point that He ‘resolutely set out for Jerusalem’ (9:51). On our journey through Lent, as we look to events of Good Friday and Easter, what are our priorities as Jesus’ disciples to be? To deny ourselves: this means to saying No to ourselves and Yes to God, as we humbly submit our will to His. Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane ‘not My will but Yours be done.’ (Luke 22:42). It means putting Jesus first in everything: our work, family, ambitions, possessions, marriage, finance and future. We will not be guided by self-interest, but by allowing God to show us how to live in His way. To take up our cross: this reminds us that the disciple is not immune from suffering, as we follow Jesus along the way of cross. Just as He carried His cross to Golgotha, we cannot avoid experiencing suffering in a fallen world. Every day we are to live in way that demonstrates to everyone that we have died to ourselves, our selfish ways and ambitions, and seek to live for God. It means breaking old selfish habits and ways of thinking, as we allow God to renew us by His Spirit. In all of this we cannot lose, because like Jesus, it is only through death that we find God’s new life. ‘He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.’ (Jim Elliot)

16 Parish News (...continued) St. Ma r y ’s Ch u r ch , Ug g e sh a l l Wa n g f o r d Ro a d , NR34 8BD While we have sadly lost our gardening club, we have two new events in the village. Helen Hayes, a qualified music teacher and a resident of , has started a singing group once a fortnight on a Wednesday evening 7.30pm to 9.00pm, and on the alternate Wednesday evenings we have a ukulele group. SINGING - No experience necessary: everything is taught by ear with the emphasis on fun. £5 per session. UKELELES - 4th and 18th March and 1st, 15th and 29th April Uggeshall Old School House £5 per session (includes refreshments). All Welcome (teens upwards) For further information please contact Helen Hayes on: 07917 799456 or email:[email protected] While the initial numbers for the singing group were small, those that attended said that it is great fun and so hopefully this will expand for future evenings. Singing is a very healthy thing to engage in as well as the companionable feel-good factor. The ukulele evening attracted beginners of varying ages. All were provided with an instrument to use and to take home to practise. I went to the first evening and was impressed that by the end all attendees were able to synchronise playing and singing along to two jolly, recognisable songs. Much laughter accompanied a really lovely event. Helen has her own band and sings beautifully – totally inspirational. It seems that ‘spring has sprung’, with the welcome sight of snowdrops and pussy willow fronds, so good wishes to all for 2020 to come. Elona Rogers

18 Parish News (...continued) St. An d r e w ’s Ch u r ch , Wa l b e r s w i c k Th e St r e e t , IP18 6UZ As a compiler of some twenty-five services of the Festival of Lessons & Carols, my hero and inspirational master was St Stephen Cleobury and I was extremely envious to read in Heart & Sole when Julia Johnson wrote that she sang under him at St Edmund’s, when I only had the thrill of an email response. When Paul Heiney asked me for the Genesis reading for the 2019 Service, I sent one previously read at a King’s Service - it so happened to be from 2014. The Bible passage from Genesis was taken from Chapter 3 verses 1-19 including verse 16 ‘Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.’ This verse is now omitted from King’s Festival of Lessons and Carols! I apologise on behalf of Mr Cleobury for ruffling some feathers at our service in St Andrew’s last Christmas! Julia Josephs

The good news for March is that work on our church roof is starting. We have sufficient funds to give the go ahead for phase one. We are immensely grateful for the grant funding we have so far received. However, we still have a way to go to get the job completed, so our Raise the Roof appeal for fund raising continues. During our horribly wet winter water has regularly poured through the roof, so to see an end to our troubles gladdens our hearts. The Bohemian Choir is due back with us towards the end of the month and will give another of their wonderful concerts in our church at 7pm on Saturday 28 March. Please come and join us on this occasion. Jackie Casement
