1 Winos get together at the 2012 Iowa State Fair

Many of you have volunteered in the past at the Wine Experience at the Iowa State Fair. This is the Iowa vine/wine industry display of, music, kid’s activities, educational talks and grape stomps that are centered near Grand Father’s Barn on top of the Hill. The Wine Experience is sponsored by the Iowa State Fair. Many of you wineries have also sold your wine and worked at the Iowa Wine Growers Association’s (IWGA) Wine & Cheese Garden located near the Varied Industries Building on the Fair Grounds.

The IWGA’s Wine & Cheese Garden is being moved up on the Hill next to the Wine Experience. The house that was next to Grand Father’s Barn has been removed and the Wine & Cheese Garden will be taking its place.

(Right) Kids grape stomp at the Wine Experience.

Getting all of us Iowa WINOs together on top of the hill should add to our POSITIVE impact at the FAIR. The HILL will become a real wine destination for people to visit. Remember to volunteer when the call comes. Putting these two wine functions together should end up being a real HOOT! mlw

Summer Web-Blended Viticulture Classes at DMACC

Not sure what pest is infecting your grapes and how to control it? Consider taking VIN103: Introduction to Pest Management where we look at how to diagnose the pests of grapes and investigate effective ways to protect the investment you have made in your grape crop. This summer we are also offering VIN104: Viticulture for Wine Production. This is a valuable class for both grape growers and wine makers as it looks at which vineyard practices are cost effective, how we can mitigate negative attributes of our fruit and increase positive ones, and many more great topics that grape growers and wine makers should be considering to optimize wine grape production. If you have any questions, contact Randall Vos at Des Moines Area Community College: [email protected]

5-24-12 Greetings wineries and breweries:

Two exciting updates for you. First, the Iowa Tourism Office is in the midst of a spring marketing campaign and the Iowa wine and beer industry has been a feature of that campaign. At NO COST to the Wine and Beer Promotion Board, ads like the one attached along with our new tag line have been used in national magazines, online advertising and out-of-home advertising like shopping malls. The campaign is targeted on Chicago, Minneapolis and the Kansas City areas. The website listed in the ads is Travel Iowa, but as you may know, the Travel Iowa website links directly to the Iowa Wine and Beer website.

The artwork for the new directory has been sent to the printer. I hope you will all have new directories sent to you soon.

I hope you all have a terrific weekend. Best,

Call for Entries - 4th Annual International Cold Climate Wine Competition

Deadline to register is August 6, 4:30 CDT

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (5/25/2012) -Wines made from grapes grown in cold climates will be in the limelight when judges gather for the 4rd annual International Cold Climate Wine Competition this August. 7

The competition will take place Aug. 16 on the campus of the University of Minnesota, where several of the cold-hardy wine grapes were developed.

This year's competition includes additional categories for ice wines, cold-hardy fruit/grape blends, and wines made from the variety Brianna. Judges will do a blind tasting of the wines and award gold, silver and bronze medals, and best of show awards to the top red, white, and specialty wines. The "Governor's Cup" is given to the favorite Minnesota wine of the internationally recognized wine experts on the judging panel.

"Cold hardy wine grapes represent a specialty crop market with significant economic potential for the Midwest," said Ron Barnes, president of the Minnesota Grape Growers Association, the competition's primary sponsor. "Our competition highlights these new varieties and helps build consumer awareness and demand for wines made from these grapes."

Minnesota's grape and wine industry is expanding rapidly and last year contributed an estimated $40 million to the state's economy. Since 1995, the number of wineries has grown from seven to 43; total sales are expected to exceed $11.3 million by 2014.

"The competition is more evidence of the increasing quality of cold-climate grapes," said Jim Luby, a professor in the U of M's department of horticultural science and one of the scientists developing the grapes. "A number of grape varieties with improved potential for high quality wines have become available in the last 15 years. This competition is an opportunity for winemakers to showcase their skill and imagination in transforming these varieties to superior wines in a rapidly growing new industry."
