Mafia III
Completing a trilogy, Mafia III is the third installment in the Mafia series. Although this time, instead of 2k Czech, Hangar 13 took on the development, which may have caused a detrimental effect. The game was released for Microsoft Windows, OS X, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in October 2016.
Overview
Mafia III is an action-adventure video game that is set in 1968's city of New Bordeaux, a fictional version of New Orleans. Players take on the role of Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam War veteran who's on a mission to challenge the Italian Mafia. Clay's motive to confront the mob is very personal, they murdered his adopted family.
As a member of a Special Forces unit in Vietnam, Lincoln Clay has obtained various combat skills and military tactics. In addition to his military training, Clay uses his connection with several criminals on his quest to build a crime organization to challenge the Italian mob.
Gameplay
Mafia III game world is large, even larger than the maps of Mafia I and II combined. The city of New Bordeaux consists of ten districts: Bayou Fantom, Delray Hollow, Barclay Mills, Frisco Fields, Pointe Verdun, Tickfaw Harbour, Southdowns, River Row, Downtown, and the French Ward.
To accomplish objectives, players may choose between aggressive or stealth approaches. You can use guns such as shotguns to eliminate enemies or opt to stay under the radar to complete missions. Mafia III has a single player mode only, which comprises of both story and optional chapters.
The Chapters (Missions)
Mafia III contains several story chapters, various types of optional chapters and missions, as well as different endings. Next, you'll find a list of the missions found in the game. Story Chapters
Beginning with his return home from Vietnam, the story chapters follow Clay's journey to fulfill his destiny. As a player, you'll be navigating different districts in New Bordeaux, accomplishing missions and collecting achievements in the process.
Agenda Missions
The agenda missions involve three main chapters, with each involving one or more side missions. The theme revolves around three characters; Cassandra, a Haitian crime lord, Thomas Burke, an Irish mob leader, and Vito Scaletta, an exiled Marcano ally.
Trafficking Missions
Similar to the agenda missions, trafficking missions also feature three characters. Emmanuel Lazare, Cassandra's second in command, Nicki Burke, daughter of Thomas Burke and a lieutenant in the Irish Mob, and Alma Diaz, an associate of Vito Scaletta.
Conversation Missions
As the name suggests, conversation missions feature discussions between Lincoln Clay and others. Mainly, these missions involve two characters; John Donovan, an ex C.I.A. agent and Father James Ballard, Clay's adoptive uncle who once rescued him from the attack by the Marcano Family.
Racing Missions
Added as an update to Mafia III in December, New Bordeaux Racing includes 12 car races with vehicle customization options. If you manage to come in first place, you'll get prize money and unlock rewards. Moreover, coming in first place in all race events will grant you access to the Griffin Marauder, an exotic class sports car.
Unmarked Missions
When you assume control of both rackets in a district, retaliation can happen at any time. During retaliation, hit squads, which consist of a hitman and his crew, will pursue Lincoln in an attempt to eliminate him. Unless you kill the hitman, hit squads will keep coming after you.
Betrayal Chapters
In betrayal chapters, Vito, Burke, and Cassandra turn on Lincoln, attempting to kill him and take over control of the city. In each mission, one of your disloyal underbosses, along with his or her men, will await your arrival somewhere. Your objective is to take care of them before they take care of you.
Mafia III Endings
Your character, Lincoln Clay, has three possible fates; rule New Bordeaux alone, rule the city together with lieutenants, or leave town and start anew in California.
Although sales set a new record for 2k Games, the third entry of the Mafia series received mixed reviews. Chiefly, gameplay disappointed quite a few critics and players, some even calling it mediocre at best. However, the game received praise for the story, characters, and themes. Is it worth playing? That's for you to decide.
