Schuman Staff writer With an almost unanimous vote, the Sanibel City Council elected its new mayor Tuesday. After a year as second in command, Marty Harrity gladly took his gave! and his place among the council as Sanibel's Mayor. As he took the oath of office with his wife Brenda by his side, Harrity swore to uphold the laws of the city, the state, the United States and perform his duties as mayor to the best of his ability. A four to one vote elected Harrity to the office held for the iast two years by Councilman Steve Brown. Councilman Jim Jennings nominated Harrity, compli- menting his efforts as vice-inayor. "1 felt the vice mayor did an excellent job when he was called on to lead Ihe council in past meetings," Jennings said. Councilman Brown, who was also nominated for another term, reluctantly accepted the nomination from Councilwoman Judy Workman. Workman nominated Brown, she said, with (he city's best interest in mind. 'i fee! strongly that this should be a unanimous vote," Brown told his fellow council members. Prior to the vole some concerns were raised by the council regarding how the public would view a change in command especially in the midst of the lawsuit against Lee County and* other Causeway issues. Harrity, who has continually endorsed a fixed-span bridge and may not always share the same views as some of his feiiow council members, vowed to uphold and represent ihe majority views of the council. 'Undy Sunday' drive April 17 & 18 St. Isabel Catholic Church on the San-Cap Road will be hosting a drive on April 17 and 18 to collect children's new socks and underwear (sizes 6 to 16) for a whole lot of little kids who can't afford these basics. The clothing will be distributed through Hispanic Service located at 4235 Michigan Ave. in Fort Myers for kids starting school next fall. This program was started seven years ago in Naples by John Fitzgerald. This is the first year it is coming to Sanibel.
