A super quality entry with a majority of single-suckled steers and heifers met with a flying trade seeing another hike upwards in prices. Whilst numbers are climbing, many more could have been sold to advantage. Half a dozen super heifers for Messrs. R.H. & C.D. Care of St. Buryan hit the top three spots, their 595kg Limousin x top at 229p/kg and £1,363, followed by 227p/kg and 224p/kg, all bought by David King of Exeter. Next at 223p/kg was the leading steer, a Limousin x from Mr. A. Mann of Budock Water, with Mr. Mann’s heaviest 680kg steer top value at £1,448, both also to the same buyer.

A fair number of mainly dairy type cull cows received similar attention to the prime cattle with firmer prices across the board with more wanted. Seven strong Friesians from Messrs. Searle & Son of Rosudgeon averaged 118p/kg and over £920, selling to a premium of 128p/kg to David King of Exeter, with heaviest 888kg cow realising £1,119 to Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh. Dearest beef cow was a nice Devon from Mr. D.J. Beckerleg of Carbis Moor selling at 123p/kg and £959 to David King.

With numbers building, the trade for store cattle was “on fire” particularly for quality with strength for early finishing. No shortage of demand for all types with buyers looking to satisfy orders and fill sheds. A grand run of 26 forward cattle from Neil Rowe Farming of The Lizard saw his three 2 year old British Blue x steers top at £1,155 and same age leading Limousin x trio at £1,135. Slightly older heifers from the same farm saw a bunch of four Limousin crosses at £1,120 and standout single to £1,135. At £1,015 was a 2 year old British Blue x heifer from Messrs. S.J. Rowe & Son of Gwinear whose top trio from a run of 18 month old Aberdeen Angus x heifers hit £905, with a 21 month old Aberdeen Angus x steer at £1,075. Young cattle from Messrs. C.J. & J.E. Colwell of Grampound saw a highlight 13 month old British Blue x steer making £730.
