IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO SEARCH ALL KINDS OF OUTSIDE SPACES

promised in the last issue, this article talks about AS exterior hides in nosework. Exterior searches tend to evoke mixed feelings in many handlers. That’s because, even with the lack of intentional distractors, there are so many things that can derail a dog’s search outside—weather, critters, people walking by, vehicles and more. Nosework trials are held regardless of weath- er. I’ve done searches in scorching heat, pouring rain, gale force winds and freezing temperatures. Exterior searches aren’t for sissies!

When you first start searching outside, I’d start with working containers outside in a location that is familiar to your dog. This should minimize the level of distrac- tions as you start working in a new location. It is likely that your dog will be distracted, even in a familiar space, so be patient with him (or her). Keep the container search easy and reward heavily for your dog finding the right one. Make it lots of fun and continue to make AmCh CanCh Calla’s All Bets On KLAD PCD Am RN containers interesting. For safety’s sake, a hide should never be more than idea to search all kinds of outside spaces—some with 6” under the vehicle. It is unsafe to have a dog crawling lots of stuff and some with hardly any stuff. It is easy under a vehicle, no matter what the situation is. KEEPING UP THERAPY PRACTICES—IN A WORLD CHANGED BY COVID-19

Even though the news of COVID-19 was making more family members at home with their pets. The spread of the virus caused our lives to THE DOGS TO KEEP PEOPLE AWARE change to what only can be described now as our new OF WHAT THEY WERE DOING AND TO normal. KEEP IN TOUCH It was early in March when the therapy dog teams The therapy dog registry’s Facebook account began received an email from one of the large therapy dog to fill with cute and clever pictures of therapy dogs registries that recommended we suspend our pet therapy dressed in seasonal or holiday attire. Not only could therapy teams not visit, but hospitals allowed no visitors, and nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice groups, and many places pet thera- py teams would normally visit were closed to visitors. Therapy dogs that were active visiting their people and putting smiles on faces all of a sudden could no longer share their joy with those that needed it most. In addi- tion, training facilities closed as well as dog groomers. Many dog owners found themselves having to do their own grooming adding even more stress to an already overwhelming situation. How were we going to meet the challenge of this drastic change in our lives and the lives of our therapy dogs? THERAPY DOGS HAVE MORE FAMILY AT HOME DURING THIS TIME With non-essential businesses closed and many peo- ple out of work or working from home, there are now Molly Bee TDIA, Joyce McIntyre’s first therapy dog

| 24 | AMERICAN SPANIEL CLUB, INC. BULLETIN | JUNE 2020 > PET THERAPY Messages from the therapy teams were encouraging and humorous. These messages were helpful in lifting morale even if for a short while. Weeks have become months in regards to restrictions for pet therapy teams, with no timeline in sight for visits to continue. LIBRARY SYSTEMS BEGAN A VIRTUAL PROGRAM WITH KIDS READING TO DOGS USING ZOOM The library explained how the visits would work and gave the handler a chance to sign up for a once-a-week visit. Currently our virtual visits are on Thursday. The pet therapy team is given a morning or afternoon time, and they meet on Zoom with a librarian, child and the child’s guardian. The therapy dog is in view and listens to the child read to them for about thirty minutes. It is a great way to keep the connection alive between the child and the therapy dog. My dogs and I volunteer at two libraries and after a couple of years we have gotten to know a lot of the children. It is good for everyone to Pistal TDI, provided by Debra Lampert-Rudman connect even if it is through electronic communication. The child can talk to the handler and ask questions about the dog. They can also talk to the dog. The dogs some- times will go to sleep!! (That’s all right; they used to fall asleep at the library too.)

Tommy Smalley, a cocker breeder and very talented artist, is willing to draw a picture that can be printed and sent to the library for children in the reading program to color. He does a wonderful job and only charges $10.00 for a picture of your dog to be sent to you via email. All Tommy needs is a photo to get started. Tommy is on Facebook, but if you need more information, contact me at [email protected]. Some of the handlers have made cards from his pictures and sent them to the facil- ities they visit. There are samples of his artwork in this article. They are pictures of two handsome buff boys, Sawyer TDIAOV and Elvis, a newly certified therapy dog. CAR RIDES AND SHORT ROAD TRIPS FOR OUTINGS Therapy dogs accustomed to going on rides to their visits still like to take car rides. Maybe have the therapy dog wear a special collar or their therapy scarf and go on a ride with their family or another member of their pack. Even though they aren’t visiting their people, it is a good change of pace for them. Find some places that are close to you and just go sightseeing. It would be a good distraction and change of scenery for the family as well as the dog. Taking walks in a quiet neighborhood or countryside will help relieve stress for handler and therapy dog. continued > 26 Coloring pictures of Sawyer TDIAOV and Morgan, his new little brother, by Tommy Smalley
