Hall of Fame Luncheon Sponsored by Harbison Estate In 2005, Joe and Pat Harbison were fortunate to find a small parcel of land on Oakville’s East side and began development of their winegrowing estate. The site proved ideal for planting Cabernet Sauvignon and sits on the same uplifted alluvial fan and red volcanic dirt as its already famous neighbors. The estate is planted to five small vineyard blocks that yield approximately 75 cases of Harbison Estate Cabernet Sauvignon each vintage. Harbison Estate’s team of artisans includes Russell Bevan, whose wines Robert Parker calls, “exuberant and showy,” and Jim Barbour, venerable Napa Valley viticulturist for nearly 40 years. Together, they produce focused and graceful wines from the land that is Harbison Estate. Hosted by Proprietors Joe & Pat Harbison; By Invitation Only

Suzanne Pride Bryan In 2004, Suzanne’s father, Jim Pride, was battling bladder cancer and had been fighting it for three years when Suzanne was diagnosed with breast cancer. Both were treated at Stanford University Medical Center at the same time.

“When you think of fun adventures to have with your Dad, side-by-side chemo treatments probably isn’t one of them.”

We sat through each other’s surgeries. We both had radiation. And the end of the story is that I made it, but Dad didn’t. Cancer can happen to anyone.

How much hope can you generate? Because we owe it to those who have gone before, and we owe it to those that fight today, and we owe it to the people who will find themselves battling cancer tomorrow. I thank Jim Valvano for having the foresight, even in his time of need, to establish the V Foundation with the help of ESPN, which has become so significant in the fight against cancer.

Karen Aldoroty

After the 2014 V Foundation Wine Celebration, and the day before the Napa earthquake, Karen was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ at Queen of the Valley Hospital, and she went on to UCSF for a second opinion, which resulted in a lumpectomy and treatment for breast cancer. Karen remained strong from day one, hopeful that she had detected her breast cancer early on. After being a caregiver to her husband, Neil, for over two decades, Karen knew quite well what she may be facing in her battle with breast cancer.

“My message is early detection!”

Neil Aldoroty watched Jim Valvano deliver his momentous speech in March 1993, not knowing that a few months later, Neil, an accomplished, healthy, 47-year old doctor, would be diagnosed with Stage IV Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and battle stage IV cancer three more times. Neil lost his fight 23 years later, with Karen right by his side, providing care during his daily crusade to live his life to the fullest.

Lauren Ackerman

One week before becoming the new Chairwoman of COPIA, The American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts, in January 2004, Lauren’s routine mammogram discovered a tumor. A biopsy revealed invasive breast cancer and was followed by a lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node surgeries. By March, 28 lymph nodes were surgically removed in Los Angeles. Lauren spent the next 16 weeks in chemotherapy. After a short summer break, Lauren then began 10 ½ weeks of radiation until the end of October. Along her journey, Lauren wondered if she was going to live through treatment and pondered resigning from the numerous boards she was on. Lauren had lost her mother to breast cancer and her father to prostate cancer and lymphoma. Dr. Amando Giuliano provided words of hope to Lauren, “You are not going to die.”

“Surviving cancer made me a stronger.”

A sisterhood of women in the Napa Valley became her “Guardian Angels” and surrounded Lauren with love and support. Lauren is grateful to a loving community that provided her with strength in numbers. Vintner Grant Honorees

Beth Novak Milliken – In memory of Mary Weber Novak Mary’s husband, Jack, died in November 1977, when they were both just 44 years of age, leaving her a widow with a large property and five children. She discovered a lump in her breast in 1978, and when she went to see a doctor in Napa, he told her not to worry – she did not have a family history, and so he felt she had nothing to worry about. Thankfully, she followed her intuition and went to see a doctor she trusted. He had her undergo surgery immediately. She was diagnosed with malignant breast cancer that was in a few lymph nodes. After the surgery, she underwent chemotherapy for a full year in Napa. She was very sick, yet she persevered, and kept her family together through it all at the Spottswoode Estate.

Mary lived cancer-free for 38 years, until lymphoma was discovered in August 2016. Though her mind and spirit were strong, her body was unable to handle the onslaught of chemotherapy for the second time. She died, unexpectedly, on September 25, 2016, at age 84.

“Based on her strength, it never once occurred to me that my mother would not make it through her treatment the second time around.”

Robin Lail

In June 1995, Robin was referred to a new doctor after her longtime OB/GYN retired. At a Friday afternoon checkup, the doctor discovered a lump in her breast and announced that she would be scheduling a double mastectomy for the coming Monday. Fortunately, the first friend she spoke with following this encounter said, “Cancel the operation, do some research, find a good breast oncologist and get informed.” She found an outstanding doctor, had a checkup and a biopsy. If any cancer can be “good,” her’s was, and a lumpectomy removed the small tumor, which had not spread, and she did not require radiation or chemotherapy.

“If facing a diagnosis, it is of the utmost importance to transition from victim to survivor mentality as fast as possible, and to gather information and be informed. Knowledge is stabilizing.”

Even though she had a very happy ending, she learned indelibly that cancer is not for sissies, and if you are one, you won’t be for long because the path requires bravery. And when the outcome is ultimately good, it is important to continue to be informed. You are part of a family of survivors that has benefitted from ongoing cancer research, information and great courage.
