No. 541-86. A BY-LAW To designate the Property at No. 2 Strachan A venue (C.N.E.. Carlsberg Building) of architectural value and of historic interest. (Passed August 11, 1986.) Whereas the Ontario Heritage Act authorizes the Council of a municipality to enact by-laws to designate real property, including all the buildings and structures thereon, to be of historic or architectural value or interest; and Whereas the Council of The Corporation of the City of Toronto has caused to be served upon the owners of the lands and premises known as No. 2 Strachan Avenue (C.N.E. Carlsberg Building) and upon the Ontario Heritage Foundation notice of intention to so designate the aforesaid real property and has caused such notice of intention to be published in a newspaper having a general circulation in the municipality once for each of three consecutive weeks; and Whereas the reasons for designation are set out in Schedule ''B'' hereto; and Whereas no notice of objection to the said proposed designation has been served upon the clerk of the municipality; Therefore the Council of The Corporation of the City of Toronto enacts as follows: 1. There is designated as being of architectural and historic value or interest the real property more particularly described in Schedule ''A'' hereto, known as No. 2 Strachan Avenue (C.N.E. Carlsberg Building). 2. The City Solicitor is hereby authorized to cause a copy of this by-law to be registered against the property described in Schedule ''A'' hereto in the proper land registry office. 3. The City Clerk is hereby authorized to cause a copy of this by-law to be served upon the owner of the aforesaid property and upon the Ontario Heritage Foundation and to cause notice of this by-law to be published in a newspaper having general circulation in the City of Toronto.

SCHEDULE ''A'' In the City of Toronto, in the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto and Province of Ontario, being composed of parts of Tyndall Avenue and Fort Rouille according to Plan 613, registered in the Land Registry Office for the Registry Division of Toronto (No. 63), closed by City of Toronto By-la,v 7935, registered in the said Land Registry Office as Instrument 2203W.F., and parts of Lots 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 101, 102, 103 and 104 according to the said Plan 613, the boundaries of the said land being described as follo,vs: - ' PREMISING that the bearings hereinafter mentioned are astronomic and are referred to the Central Meridian 79 degrees and 30 minutes \Vest Longitude in Zone 10 of the Ontario Co­ ordinate System, then; COMMENCING at a point, the location of which be arrived at as follows: BEGINNING at a point in the limit bet,veen the \Vater Lot fronting and the Water Lot fronting The Ordnance Reserve, where the same is intersected by the northerly limit of Shore Boulevard \Vest as assumed by Metropolitan Toronto By-la,v 31, the said point being also the north-easterly angle of PART 1 on a plan of survey deposited in the said Land Registry Office as 63R-269; THENCE North 64 degrees 40 minutes and 55 seconds West, a distance of 131.98 metres to the point of commencement; THENCE South 68 degrees 09 minutes and 50 seconds West, a distance of 20.84 metres; THENCE North 62 degrees 52 minutes and 05 seconds \Vest, a distance of 126.15 metres; THENCE North 12 degrees 41 minutes and 15 seconds \Vest, a distance of 21.71 metres; THENCE North 72 degrees 14 minutes and 10 seconds East, a distance of 83.10 metres to the beginning of a curve to the right having a radius of 22.98 metres; THENCE south-easterly along the said curve to the right having a radius of 22.98 metres, a distance of 39.86 metres more or less to the end of the said curve, the said curve having a chord equivalent of 35.05 metres measured on a course of South 62 degrees 48 minutes and 55 seconds East from the said beginning of the curve; THENCE South 17 degrees 59 minutes and 00 seconds East, a distance of 84.42 metres more or less to the s.aid point of commencement. The hereinbefore described land is illustrated on the attached sketch marked ''B''.

SCHEDULE ''B'' Reasons for the designation of the Property at No. 2 Strachan Avenue (C.N.E. Carlsberg Building). The Ontario Government Building, no,v kno,vn as the Carlsberg Building, in Exhibition Place at 2 Strachan Avenue is designated on architectural and historical grounds. Built in 1926 for exhibition use by the Ontario Government it ,vas designed in the Beaux Arts style by the prominent architectural firm of Chapman and Oxley. The large central dome, with distinctive cro,vning lantern, smaller domes on the paired corner towers, Corinthian columns at the south entrance, high degree of detailing and arched windows, make this building one of the most ' distinctive of the Exhibition Place buildings. The plan surrounding an display court is unique and well suited to its original purpose. The sculptured lions by C.D. McKechnie at the entrance are significant elements of this important ,vaterfront landmark. ' 3
