A QUICK CHECK-IN WITH MANDALOUN LOOKS TO FLY HIGH IN PEGASUS ANGEL CORDERO JR. Juddmonte homebred and GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Mandaloun (Into Mischief) tops a small field set for Sunday's TVG Pegasus S., the local prep for the $1-million GI TVG.com Haskell Invitational S. at Monmouth July 17. Opening his account with a pair of wins in Kentucky, the 'TDN Rising Star' was third as the 4-5 favorite in the GIII Lecomte S. Jan. 16 and rebounded to win that venue's GII Risen Star S. Feb. 13. A puzzling sixth as the favorite in the GII Louisiana Derby Mar. 20, Mandaloun got back on track in a big way on the first Saturday in May, coming up just a half-length short of Medina Spirit (Protonico) at almost 27-1, earning a field-best 101 Beyer Speed Figure. Famer Angel Cordero, Jr. is busy at Belmont Park as the jockey agent for up-and-coming young rider Manny Franco. These days, it=s not easy to make it to the top of the jockey ranks in New York, according to Cordero. AFortunately, we have something happening here that didn=t happen for a long time anywhere,@ he said. AWe have the top nine or 10 riders and they=re all riding together. We haven=t seen competition that hard since Santa Anita when they had [Bill] Shoemaker, Laffit [Pincay, Jr.], [Eddie] Delahoussaye and [Chris] McCarron all together. Now it=s tough. You=ve got 10 top riders here that no matter where they go, they could be leading rider.@ Cordero has enjoyed watching, and in many cases mentoring, many of the jockeys who are at the top of today=s standings. AThey have all come a long way to reach the top,@ he said. AI remember when Johnny [Velazquez] was a little kid and came here to the United States and worked his way to becoming the champion he is now. Angel Cordero, Jr. cont. from p1 Cordero said, ANow I=m very fortunate to be working with him.@ Sometimes, he says, seeing these talented athletes in action makes him a bit melancholy as he reminisces on his career that included 14 riding titles at Saratoga and three wins in the GI Kentucky Derby. AI wish I was riding now because that=s what makes an athlete a little better. When you compete with somebody that is good, then you know you=re really in for a fight. The friendships with the jockeys is outside [of the racetrack.] When the gate opens, nobody is friends. When you don=t win a race, 10 minutes later-- maybe not right after, but 10 minutes later--everything is back to normal.@ One of Cordero=s favorite racing memories involving a fellow Hall of Fame jockey is when he traveled to California to ride for D. Wayne Lukas and was coupled in an entry with Laffit Pincay Jr. After the races that evening, Pincay offered to drive Cordero back to the airport. AWe got out of the car at the airport and we hugged each other and he said, >Good luck, Campeon,=@ Cordero recalled. The then-newcomer was riding high as he made he way through the airport after being referred to as a champion by the well-respected rider. AThat hit me really hard,@ Cordero said. AI was sitting in first class thinking that I was the president of the United States.@ When he landed back on the East Coast and his wife was there to greet him, Cordero insisted that he now be referred to as >Campeon.= ALaffit called me Campeon and I like it,@ he told her. AAnd if Laffit called me Campeon, you should call me Campeon.@ AOkay, Campeon,@ she said. AGet in the car and let=s go.@ When Cordero returned to California a few weeks later, he heard a child along the paddock ask Pincay for an autograph. AI=ll give it to you later, Campeon,@ Pincay responded. AWhen I came home, my wife asked how I did,@ Cordero said. AI told her I won, but I=m sad because I=m not a Campeon anymore. Laffit calls everybody a Campeon. I thought it was a privilege for me, but it wasn=t.@ While he=s been retired from riding for well over two decades, Cordero has retained his role as an important ambassador in racing and one of the sport=s biggest cheerleaders. ARight now what we need is to stay together and rebuild our game,@ he said. AThis is the best sport and there are a lot of people involved in it from grooms to hot walkers and assistant trainers. We need to get together and try to make our sport the best. We are all going to have problems and that=s a part of life, but I think as a group we can always get together and do the right thing for the sport.@ TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 4 OF 6 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • JUNE 13, 2021

UNION-RENNEN HIGHLIGHTS SUNDAY STAKES LEVEY LOOKS FOR FIRST With all the key focus on Royal Ascot next week, Sunday=s European action is on the light side with Cologne staging the ROYAL VICTORY feature in the G2 Sparkasse KolnBonn Union-Rennen for the Deutsches Derby hopefuls. A prestigious race in its own right, the 11-furlong contest has been won by the likes of Novellist (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), Sea the Moon (Ger) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and Laccario (Ger) (Scalo {GB}) in recent years and it remains to be seen whether any of the 11 going to post this time can make it anywhere near that league. Gestut Auenquelle=s Virginia Storm (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) will be popular, having finished runner-up in the G3 Bavarian Classic at Munich May 1, while Stall Lintec=s Apr. 24 G3 Dr Busch-Memorial winner and May 24 G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen third Best of Lips (Ire) (The Gurkha {GB}) will also have his fans despite moving up markedly in trip. At ParisLongchamp, the G3 La Coupe sees Godolphin=s Mar. 27

Sean Levey aboard Snow Lantern for her G1 Dubai World Cup third Magny Cours (Medaglia d=Oro) take >TDN Rising Star= maiden victory | racingfotos.com on Bertrand Milliere=s impressive May 8 Listed Prix Bedel scorer Iresine (Fr) (Manduro {Ger}). Cont. p3 Sean Levey has already set several notable benchmarks in British racing--being the first black jockey to ride in the Derby in 2016 when fifth on Humphrey Bogart (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) and, two years later, the first black jockey to win a British Classic when steering (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) to victory in the G1 1000 GuineasBand next week Levey hopes to earn a belated first Royal Ascot victory. The 33-year-old Swaziland-born rider, who will partner the likes of Snow Lantern (GB) ( {GB}) and Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) for Richard Hannon at the Royal meeting, said, AMy form at Ascot alone is very good--but when it comes to Royal Ascot, not so much. I wouldn=t say I=ve been unfortunate. I=ve been placed many a time, mostly in handicaps and what have you. I=m disappointed it hasn=t happened yet, so I would just like the box ticked now. It=s a bit of a monkey on my back, that one.@ >TDN Rising Star= Dolia returns at ParisLongchamp | Scoop Dyga Levey certainly has the right foundation to take his career to the next level. Sharing in the glory was jockey Tom Clark who guided the fortunes of the stablemates so expertly. The well-related Converge delivered an 11th Group 1 title for his Tulloch Lodge trainers with an effort on Saturday that left no excuses for the beaten brigade. Adding to the celebrations was the fact that Converge was bred by Evergreen Rich, which is managed by Bott=s father Tony. AIt was fantastic to watch and obviously we came here hoping to see a performance like that.
