A Message From The President

Thank you for joining us for another exciting season of la- crosse. I am eagerly looking forward to watching the best of the sport played on Homewood field. We’re thrilled to wel- come fans, alumni and students to this 127th year of lacrosse’s most storied pro- gram.

Blue Jay lacrosse continues to repre- sent the best of Johns Hopkins’ spirit of excellence. To do so, year in and year out, means rising to any challenge. Head coach Dave Pietramala sets the standards high with an ambitious schedule and this year is no exception. The Blue Jays’ 14- game regular season schedule is the larg- est in school history and one of the na- tion’s most demanding.

An exciting eight-game home schedule promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats with matchups against perennial powerhouses Syracuse and North Caro- Front Row (L-R): Head Coach Dave Pietramala, Johns Hopkins President Ronald J. And the excitement continues on the road when the Blue Jays take on top five-ranked Virginia, as well as traditional rivals Hofstra, Navy and Loyola. Add in our two games against long- time rivals Princeton and at ’s own M&T Bank Stadium and there will be no shortage of action for the Nest, our alumni and fans to enjoy. We’re also thrilled to be co-hosting the 2010 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championships at M&T Bank Stadium with the NFL’s and our comrades at Towson, Loyola and UMBC. Baltimore has always been lacrosse’s true home and we look forward to welcoming thousands of fans to our great city this Memorial Day weekend for an unrivaled lacrosse experience.

For those of you who may not be able to be in the stands this year there’s good news, as 13 of our 14 regular season games will air on national tele- vision. We are proud to continue our exclusive broadcast deal with ESPNU, ensuring that fans can see the Blue Jays wherever they are. Fans can also listen to the live local radio broadcast on the official website of Hopkins athletics (www.HopkinsSports.com). Combine the electronic media with our extensive local print coverage and the exposure of our lacrosse program is unparalleled.

We celebrate all that these young men have achieved on the field, but what they’ve done off it deserves as much cheering. In the last nine years the team has produced six CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, a Rhodes Scholar Semifinalist and an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient. Turning their dedication to their community, the team completed the sixth year of its Holiday Magic program that raises money and collects clothing, school supplies and other essentials for kids and families in need in Baltimore and greater Maryland. With the addition of our current freshman class, which has been tabbed as the top class in the nation by Inside Lacrosse, I know this team will continue to grow as players, students and representatives of the spirit of excellence and dedication that is at the heart of this great university.

To coach Pietramala, team captains Sam DeVore, Tom Duerr and Michael Kimmel and the entire 2010 Blue Jay lacrosse team, I will be cheering you on throughout the season!

To our alumni, students, parents, and fans, thank you for continuing to support the great tradition of Hopkins Lacrosse. I look forward to seeing you at Homewood Field.

Go Jays!

2010 Men’s Lacrosse Media Guide • www.hopkinssports.com 5 From the Desk of Dave Pietramala

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since our staff arrived on campus and undertook the great responsibil- ity of leading the Johns Hopkins lacrosse program. Throughout these years, there have been some tremendous accomplishments. Most would cite our undefeated National Championship in 2005 and our second in 2007 as the most notable achievements in recent years. However, at Johns Hopkins University our pursuit of excellence has always carried much further than the lacrosse field.

Make no mistake we take great satisfaction in the accomplishments of our program on the field. Whether it be our 44 National Championships, nine NCAA titles, our record-setting number of tournament appearances or the countless All Americans that have donned the Hopkins black and blue, the standard of excellence which has been created within our program continues to be a source of pride for the Blue Jay Nation. Of equal importance are our record-setting number of CoSIDA Academic All Americans, our highly-successful Holiday Magic program and the leaders our players have become in their chosen fields.

As Johns Hopkins University continues to grow under the leadership of President Ron Daniels, our program is committed to emulating this growth while maintaining the standard of excellence that has made Hopkins lacrosse special to so many. Unwavering is our commit- ment to the development of our student-athletes. Whether it be in the classroom or on the field, we will continue to develop and reveal the character, leadership qualities and natural abilities of this group of young men. We remain very enthusiastic about their commitment to achieving excellence in all the endeavors they undertake. The foundation they develop will carry with them for many years and far beyond the challenges they will face in the classroom or on the field.

With the arrival of the 2010 season at Johns Hopkins comes an unrivaled and rare excitement for the sport of lacrosse. Few, if any, can match the electric feeling of Homewood Field on game day. Our large crowds and unprecedented television exposure continue to shine the spotlight on Johns Hopkins University and the Blue Jay lacrosse program. We welcome many of you back and to those that are new to the Hopkins lacrosse experience, we hope that you will find it to be a unique and special experience.
