ASP squashmedia .com.au HEDRICK WINS AUSSIE OPEN ASP Story: Ben Rowles Photos: Mike Wilkinson Rex Hedrick and Low Wee Wern are the Australian Open Men’s and Women’s champions for 2018. The duo took out the respective titles following two high-quality Open finals at the Mulgrave Country Club on Sunday afternoon (AEST). The 3-0 score line didn’t accurately reflect the evenness of the Men’s Open final, which was won in 61 minutes by top seed and local Melbourne favourite Hedrick against tournament third seed, Dimitri Steinmann. It was a case of third time lucky for the 29-year-old, as he finally secured a major tournament win in his home state following runner-up results at Mulgrave in the 2016 and 2017 Victorian Opens. As is often the case with a match involving Rex Hedrick, long, grinding rallies were the order of the day, with both players engaging in a tight tussle from the outset. It was Hedrick who settled first in the match however to take the first game, before Switzerland’s Steinmann found his groove in the second with some terrific strokes. In fact, Steinmann looked set to claim the second game at 8-10, before Hedrick dug deep to win the next four points and subsequently the all-important game. While Steinmann continued to fight on in the third, the missed opportunity in the second proved to be a huge body blow, with Hedrick going from strength-to-strength to close out the match in three - 11-4, 12-10, 11-5. The event offered two professional events: PSA M5 and W5. The Squash Melbourne Open replaced the old Moorabbin Open but was still played at Moorabbin, the largest centre in Melbourne with 11 Courts. Only one Aussie reached a final. That was Christine Nunn in the PSA W5 event. The best of the men was rising star Nick Calvert who reached the semi finals with an upset win against #3 seed and older brother Tom Calvert 11-9, 10-12, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10 (78m). There wasn’t much left in the tank for Nick after his 78 minute clash but he gave it his best against #1 seed Evan Williams (NZL) in the semi final losing in straight 9-11, 0-11, 3-11 (26m). So all eyes and all hopes were with our #1 seed Christine Nunn. Poster girl Nunn was facing a regular visitor to Australia in the form of #2 seed Vanessa Chu from Hong Kong. Nunn got off to a flying start winning the first before losing her way in the next two. She fought hard to win the 4th and level the scores but the effort told and Nunn lost the 5th 5-11. It was a fitting final but unfortunately, in the end it just wasn’t Nunn’s day losing 11-8, 9-11, 7- 11, 11-9, 5-11 (49m). Chu was very fortunate to reach the final after recovering from 0-2 down (and 10 all in the 3rd) to run over the top of Sarah Cardwell (AUS) 6-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-7 (50m). ASP Mixed Doubles Cameron Pilley & Donna Urquhart Men’s Doubles Zac Alexander & David Palmer Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi! oi! oi! ASP squashmedia .com.au Squash Media would like to congratulate Cameron, David, Donna, Rachael and Zac on their awesome achievements GREEN & GOLD at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. To David Palmer and Rachael Grinham ... once again thank you for so many wonderful memories over 20 years at the CG. David Palmer has now won 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals from 6 Games (in actual fact it is 9 medals from 5 Games because he didn’t win a medal at his first Games appearance). I’m proud to say I was in the audience to witness your 9th medal ... GOLD! Rachael Grinham has now won 2G, 2S and 4B from 5 Games. Another fantastic record of achievement. Winning medals at the Commonwealth Games is a wonderful achievement but as 41 year olds ... well that is simply incredible! Both players may have lost a little speed but their shots and tactics are still awesome Congratulations & thank you Refs! Steve Walton put it best “I thought they did a sensational job because the pressure is immense. The amount of information that they have to manage now is quite extreme particularly when you are the main ref in centre court and you have ear pieces, iPads, 2 competitive players and you are seated right amongst the spectators that groan every time a decision goes against their player. The refs are also competing to referee in the big matches and they have their own behind the scenes challenges to manage also.” ASP squashmedia .com.au to watch.

IInnssttaanntt UUppddaattee ISSUE 44 MAY/JUNE 2013 To: ALL WSF MEMBER NATIONAL FEDERATIONS cc: WSF Regional Vice-Presidents, WSF Committee Members, WSA, PSA, Accredited Companies ST PETERSBURG AWAITS May 29 is a critical date for squash. Last December we presented our case to the IOC’s Programme Commission and this day in May we shall do so to the IOC Executive Board in St Petersburg, Russia, along with the other shortlisted sports for the place on the programme of the 2020 Olympic Games. The presentation group will be led by WSF President Ramachandran and features our two world champions Nicol David and Ramy Ashour, whose passion and charisma are sure to impress the IOC President Jacques Rogge and his fourteen IOC Board colleagues. The bid film will be shown – it features the two players and has already been viewed nearly 110,000 times, along with the video giving a snapshot of the 185 countries that play squash (you can see both at http://www.worldsquash.org/ws/?p=10564) – along with a new film, that is being finished featuring innovation, broadcast and presentation. The spoken presentations will be accompanied by over 70 great slides illustrating the points made. What happens next is not confirmed. Originally it was stated that one sport would be recommended for ratification by the full IOC membership but indications now are that a few sports may be put forward for the final vote. That will be made clear on the evening of 29th May and we must hope that we are there for the final decision in Buenos Aires on 8th September.
