In the Orthodox world, he is widely referred to simply as "Reb Moshe", and his halakhic rulings are often referenced and relied upon in contemporary rabbinic literature. He was born in Uzda, near Minsk, Belarus. He came to America and settled on the Lower East Side of New York City in 1936. He became rosh yeshiva of Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem.
