The New Warbler Rotary Club of Bailey’s Crossroads 21 May 2021

Today’s Speaker: Bob Martel, Hypnotist, Author (And Hot Air Balloon Pilot) Bob has combined decades of experience as a writer and marketing consultant, as a performance coach to small business owners and as a professional hypnotist! Each requires exceptional (self) influence and persuasion skills. He has found a unique blend of skills and experience that can help you to influence your own minds (and the trajectory of your life), as well as influence the minds of others.

Upcoming Speaker: 28 May, Walter Rudy, Wheels of Hope One of Project Rozana’s key initiatives is Wheels of Hope. This provides transportation to Palestinians from their homes in the West Bank and Gaza to border checkpoints, and from there to Israeli hospitals for treatment. Without this free service, many Palestinian families would not be able to access the much needed medical services in Israel.

Upcoming Speaker: 18 Jun, Capt. Shawn Adcock, FCPD Mason District Commander Capt. Shawn Adcock, FCPD Commander of the Mason Station, will speak on 18 Jun. I'm sure many of you have questions for Capt. Adcock; in order to provide you with timely answers to those questions, it is requested that your questions be submitted in advance to Ben no later than 5:00pm - Friday, 11 Jun. This will allow time to research the questions and answer them in the time provided. Time permitting, additional questions will be taken during the Q and A session.

Update on Bob The following is from Susan: “Thank you for all the prayers and support and for all your offers to ‘Just lean on me.’ You are propping us up. The meals are most appreciated and most delicious. Thank you too for all of those who have signed up on Meal Train or otherwise offered meals and other forms of instrumental and emotional support. Thank you for sharing the pictures of the beautiful flowers in your gardens and wildlife that you have spotted and for sharing the good things going on in your lives. These give us inspiration and put a smile on our faces. We could not do this without our loving community. Today is a new day. Bob’s platelets are at 14,000 (up from 10,000 Tuesday morn) and his Fibrinogen is at 168,000 this morning. He has not had platelet transfusion for a couple of days and has not had Cryo/Fibrinogen transfusion for several days. Therefore, this suggests that after 5 days of the Promacta medicine that perhaps we are seeing a positive effect from the medicine. We have a long road ahead as 75,000 is now the number that hematology and cardiology is setting for him to be able to undergo open heart surgery. Please keep the cards coming and any funny stories, silly pictures, youtube videos that I can share with Bob. He has always fully subscribed to laughter as the best medicine and the laughs have been difficult to elicit of late.” Susan, we are here for you!

Suzy Cicada on TV! This past Sunday, Suzanne, our speaker a couple of weeks ago and your favorite cicada lecturer, was featured on CBS Morning News. If you blinked, you missed the almost 6 foot example of a male cicada named Kevin. However, there was a pretty good picture of the carved tree trunk.

MicheLo Project Rotarian Meesh is heading to eSwatini for our MicheLo Project. As you might expect, eSwatini has also endured economic hardships during the pandemic. She typically arrives with supplies and clothes that have been generously donated by Rotarians, friends, church members, and family; this year she is hoping to arrive with cloth masks. Donations of fabric / cloth masks would be most appreciated -- all sizes welcome with children's sizes most needed. Target sells packs of two cloth masks for $4 --- and for the talented sewers, homemade masks would be most welcome! Let Meesh know if you can help her.

Be Our Guest! Last week’s meeting had Max’s brother Lowell join us. We have some great speakers coming up and there may be friends who would be interested. Do you remember when we would meet at Goodwin House and every so often, we would welcome a guest or two to our breakfast? Just because we are meeting via Zoom doesn’t mean we can’t invite some guests. How did you become a Rotarian? Probably because someone invited you to a meeting. Why not extend the same invitation you got to someone you know? Every present member knows someone that might be interested. This is a great opportunity to find potential members. Zoom makes it an easy commute.

AAC Donation Challenge A few weeks ago, Meesh made a presentation and spoke about an initiative that she and Tijani started, Aspire African Communities (AAC). Meesh has spoken to several Rotary Clubs about AAC. McLean Rotarian Pam Danner has issued the challenge to personally match, dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000, donations made by BXRC members to AAC. Please mail donations made out to The McLean Rotary Foundation, PO Box 561, McLean, VA 22101. Please include a note acknowledging BXRC membership. Note: an online payment option is not currently available. Let’s accept the challenge. On a separate note, Tijani received his blue badge this week. Congratulations! You started as an Interact student and transitioned into a Blue-Badged Rotarian. The blue badge was just a formality; you have been a Rotarian all your life.

Editor’s Prerogative: Nationals Update Before I speak about the Nationals, I need to address a growing trend in this year. Wednesday night, Corey Kluber of the New York Yankees threw a no-hitter against the Texas Rangers. This is the sixth time this season, which is only a month and a half old, that a no-hitter has been thrown, and the second in two days! The season record for the number of no-hitters thrown in a season is seven, which was done three times (1990, 1991, and 2021). The list of pitchers who pitched no-hitters this year are Joe Musgrove (SD), Carlos Rodon (CWS), John Means (BAL), (CIN) and Spencer Turnbill (DET). A fun fact: Of the six no-hitters thrown this season, only three teams have been no-hit (Texas, Seattle, and Cleveland). When you go to a game, any number of things can happen, perhaps something unexpected. You never know when a no-hitter will be thrown, so that makes the games must see. You may be a part of history, just sitting in the stadium. Kluber’s no-hitter was special for him as last season, when he was pitching for the Rangers (the team he no-hit), he only pitched one inning before having to shut down his season due to injury. Another interesting fact from Wednesday night is it was Mystery Bobblehead giveaway in Texas; some fans got a Kluber bobblehead which was leftover from last season. How cool would it be to get a bobblehead of someone who did something special in that game? Today’s trivia question is: Has there ever been more than one no-hitter thrown in a single day? If so, who were the pitchers to achieve the feat? Knowing the competitor he is, I am sure Max Scherzer is chomping at the bit to throw a no-hitter this year. Perhaps he will. He continues moving up the all-time list, currently 19th with Justin Verlander in his sights. This weekend, the Nationals return home to host the in the annual Battle of the Beltways. I have tickets for Sunday’s game. Perhaps there will be a no-hitter thrown. In other Nationals news, it was announced this week that fans who have been fully vaccinated will not be required to wear masks. Also, starting with the 10 June series, the Nationals will open the park to full capacity.
