A Closer Look at Program Selectivity Undergraduate elementary programs that take a proactive stance on high admissions standards

When teacher education programs are not housed in selective institutions, it is necessary for those programs to set admissions criteria that ensure most teacher candidates are drawn from the top half of college-going students. Programs can achieve this by setting a minimum SAT or ACT score criterion, by requiring a minimum GPA based on a candidate’s first two years of college coursework, or by requiring an additional standardized test with sufficient cut scores as a condition of admission. Programs can also intentionally admit a cohort of candidates that achieves a high average SAT or ACT score, or a high average GPA.

Out of 438 teacher education programs residing in less selective institutions, only 12 percent employ these additional admissions criteria. The 52 undergraduate elementary programs below earn an A or B on the Selection Criteria Standard based on their program’s admissions criteria.
