hen it comes to design, there is no denying Wthe lure of an appealing aesthetic. But when the pragmatic side of home ownership enters the equation, along with growing favour to make lifestyle choices that are supportive of the environment, there is a sense that you’d have to choose one or the other: fashion or function. Windows are triple glazed. There is a shower drain heat recovery pipe, which captures the heat from shower water. Roy is passionate about educating the consumer about the environmental benefits of his homes, but also how these environmentally-friendly choices actually contribute to comfort as well. Roy says, “The issue with sustainability is that most people don’t understand it well. Everyone wants something environmentally friendly, whether it is energy efficiency or recycled material, but people don’t always know the value.” Just as Roy is dedicated to his vision of combining style with substance, so is the team of employees at RND. Many of the employees have been there long term, and are dedicated to seeing projects through; there is collaboration and contributions from everyone. Continued on page 28

Case in point is RND Construction Ltd.’s new customer home in Riverside Park South. RND’s tagline is, appropriately “where sustainability meets style.” Additionally, what this four-bedroom home reveals is that when it comes to combining fashion with function, function doesn’t have to be a supporting actor. In fact, in this house, it’s the star of the show. “This house has something for everyone and is geared specifically for families,” says RND president Roy Nandram. It’s the latest collaboration between Roy and architect Christopher Simmonds. It is part of a four home urban infill project called Riverpark Green. This home looks innocuous enough. It

For a homeowner, the value is both tangible and intangible. There will be cost savings because of energy efficiency, but this house has been built to provide maximum comfort and convenience, a by-product of these environmentally-friendly finishes and building practices. “This house has amazing indoor air quality,” explains Roy. “This house is very durable. The finishes on the exterior are maintenance-free. Inside, the porcelain tiles, the cabinetry and the hardwood floors are very durable. You won’t have to do many repairs. And of course, the equipment in this house is designed to save energy.” To say that this home is thoughtfully laid out is a vast understatement. Beyond the inviting floor plan, there are many gadgets, devices and details spread throughout the home that literally facilitate and improve quality of life: smart task-oriented strip lighting in the kitchen (Marchand Lighting + Electrical), drying racks and built-in The master bedroom adds some colour with a hangers (Deslaurier Custom Cabinets) statement wall and bright accessories. SERVICING ALL YOUR NEEDS: The Electrical and Plumbing store has experts offering fixture selection and electrical installations plus renovation and consulting services. Jim says you can expect “the best selection of lighting and plumbing fixtures in eastern Ontario with knowledgeable service from seasoned professionals at very competitive prices.”

ON TREND: “Contemporary and modern designs with neutral colours are very strong right now,” says Jim, along with “industrial and restoration decorative fixtures.” He says integrated LED recessed lighting and decorative LED vanity fixtures and chandeliers are the hottest trend right now. “LED DAZZLING LIGHTS technology has allowed manufacturers to create bold new designs without the same concerns for space and heat that come with incandescent or halogen fixtures.”

THE COMPANY: Imagine a place where you can spend hours looking up and be dazzled with lights that include sparkling chandeliers, modern marvels and even helicopters for a child’s room. Now turn to the other side of the store and discover an array of products that make a bathroom shine. That’s what’s inside The Electrical & Plumbing Store at Bells Corner and on Ogilvie Road.

SMALL BEGINNINGS: “The Electrical & Plumbing Store opened its doors at 1080 Ogilvie Rd. in 1980,” explains Vice President Jim Sourges. “Originally a small electrical wholesale operation that stocked a few chandeliers and table lamps for its contractor clientele, the store expanded throughout the decade and, in 1991, added plumbing fixtures and materials to its broad selection of lighting and electrical items.”

THE SECOND STORE: Not content with just one store, a second store opened in 1993 at 31 Northside Rd. in to service the rapidly-expanding west end of Ottawa. A new larger Bells Corners location opened in 2003, says Jim. “Improvements to the Northside Road location included expanding both the lighting and plumbing showrooms, making it the largest such showroom in Ottawa.” There’s also a parts counter to service the installation and repair requirements for both tradespeople and homeowners.

The homeowners, a couple with two school-aged children, embrace these housing antitheses to help define their style. “What is our style?” the homeowner wonders aloud. “You could describe our style as modern, but also as whimsical. We wanted space, light and sun. We’re a busy family and we wanted smart pieces. We are very much about function.” This is clearly evident in a number of their design choices. In a collaborative relationship with carpenter Peter van Delst of PeterDutch Custom Cabinetry, the homeowners designed, with support from Peter, custom benches, built-ins and storage systems. They not only contribute heavily to the aesthetic, but clearly simplify day-to-day living because of their pragmatic intent. “We knew what we wanted, and we knew that we didn’t want to shop for something that didn’t exist,” says the homeowner. She told Peter, “I’ll design these, but you need to guide us.” The end result is classic and simple cupboard systems in the children’s bedrooms, a lovely built-in wall unit in the sunny family room and even a smart, stylish island in the dressing area of the expansive master bedroom. There’s even a series of smart hooks with benches in the mudroom, where the kids can toss their towels when running in and out to the pool and hot tub (Floral Design Landscaping). What’s even better than looking at a lake surrounded by nature? Who doesn’t covet a corner office with a picture window? How about an office with a near floor-to ceiling window on one side instead of a wall, so that these homeowners can take in the view from their home office? “We wanted to be able to see the lake while we were working,” says the homeowner. The kitchen is an interesting play in colour opposites, leveraging the interplay between light and dark. “Originally, I had wanted an all-white kitchen,” says the homeowner, but then reconsidered. “I needed to make a focal point in the kitchen,” which is why she selected the contrast of darker cabinetry (Deslaurier Custom Cabinets), which is made even more rich with the light, neutral flooring (Euro Tile + Stone) and quartz countertops (Deslaurier Custom Cabinets). The design of the kitchen very much reflects the personality of this family: modern, but earthy. The open layout means that the kids can run freely without worrying about the space’s durability. It’s also a great space for entertaining. In yet another cool design choice, there is a thin line of backsplash (Euro Tile + Stone), which borders yet another large window, providing a panoramic view of the backyard. One of the most visually interesting rooms upstairs is the sumptuous master bath, where the focal point is a modern take on the claw- foot tub (Mondeau Bathroom & Kitchen) where claws are replaced by angled dark blocks. “We actually picked the tub first,” says the homeowner, “and then we designed the bathroom around it,” using a monochromatic palette of greys, blacks and white to enhance the rich angles evident in this room. 613.850.6275 www.pattersonhomes.ca The dramatic design effect of this renovated home underscores how renovations are essentially the evolution of a home, as it moves through generations, retaining its roots, but reinventing itself in a contemporary context.
