Tissot is supporting the world's largest winter multisport event for university student-athletes as Worldwide Timing and Scoring Partner. As official timekeeper, Tissot has also been involved countless times at Winter Universiades. The Winter Universiade The Winter Universiade is the largest winter multisport event after the Olympic Games. In 2021 the 30th occasion of this unique event will take place in Central Switzerland and the Grisons. The organisation is a joint project of the six cantons of Central Switzerland Lucerne, Uri, Schwyz, Obwalden, Nidwalden and Zug, and the City of Lucerne. The programme from the 11 to 21 December 2021 comprises ten sports, to be contested at eight venues. Around 1600 Students aged between 17 and 25 from more than 540 universities in 50 countries are expected to attend. Universiades have been held every two years since 1959 in winter and summer and are assigned by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to the national university sports federation of the host country and the responsible organising committee. Swiss University Sports is a member of FISU and is responsible for the selection of Swiss athletes for Universiades. We are now well into the new year and have made substantial progress especially towards preparations for the up coming 7th IWG World Conference On Women and Sport. As we go into the final year of IWG hosted in Botswana Gaborone, we review the progress of projects that we have over the years embarked on. Proj- ects that will form part of our legacy plan at local, regional and International level. In this edition we give an extensive update of the preparations of the conference thus far. We also look at the various projects that we have been running in the local realm and related activities. We continue our work with our various international partners and in this edition we give an update of the engagements that we have had in the past months. We celebrate great achievements including our new signatories and achievements received by some of our leaders. We continue to promote and activate for participation at the 7th IWG World Conference on Women and Sport to be held in Gaborone, Botswana from 17-20 May both in the region and internationally. We encourage and call on all to now visit our website www.iwg-gti.org to register for the conference and also appreciate the various participation options available. These including the opportunity to submit abstracts and present, to host side meetings during the conference and also to exhibit at the conference. During this time he served as Switzerland's ambassador to China from 2000 to 2004. The ambassador, who loves Chinese culture, read the famous Chinese book Dream of the Red Chamber when he was 12 or 13 years old. He believed that the book gave him an insight into the Chinese view of the world. There is Chinese-style furniture, calligraphy and paintings, sculptures and small ornaments at the ambassador's home in Switzerland. He also displayed a box of exquisite snuff bottles collected during his tenure. Since retiring in 2008, the ambassador has enjoyed writing calligraphy at home. He showed off his calligraphy works, one of which features the phrase: "Correct your mistakes as soon as you know it, and do not forget what you have learned."     FISU OVERVIEW: FISU stands for Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire (International University Sports Federation) and was founded in 1949. FISU's main responsibility is the supervision of both Summer and Winter Universiades (World University Games) as well as the World University Championships (WUC). FISU’s main governing body is the General Assembly which represents the members of the organization (153 National University Sports Federations). The Governing Body elects the Executive Committee for a period of four years, which makes all the necessary decisions for the smooth running of FISU. Ten permanent commissions advise the Executive Committee in their specialised areas, simplifying its duties. FISU is funded through subscription, organising and entry fees, television incomes, and marketing activities. The Universiades (World University Games) The Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival which is staged every two years in a different city and which is second in importance only to the Olympic Games. The Summer Universiade consists of 12 compulsory sports (Athletics, Basketball, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Judo, Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball) and up to three optional sports chosen by the host country. The record figures are 9,006 participants in Bangkok, Thailand in 2007 and 174 countries in Daegu, Korea in 2003. The Winter Universiade consists of 7 compulsory sports (Alpine skiing, Snowboarding, Nordic skiing composed of jump, cross country & combined, Curling, Ice Hockey, Short-Track Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Biathlon) and one or two optional sports also chosen by the host country. They gathered a record of 2,511 participants in Torino, Italy in 2007 and a record number of 50 countries in Innsbruck, Austria in 2005.

    Media Release Lucerne, 13 April 2021 Winter Universiade is back on track The Winter Universiade 2021 will open on 11 December 2021, around eleven months later than planned due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since the decision to postpone was made, the Organising Committee has worked hard to adapt the plans to the new dates. The most significant changes affect the Alpine Skiing competitions in Stoos and the closing ceremony. The budget for the Winter Universiade 2021 now amounts to CHF 42 million. The Winter Universiade is set to take place in Central Switzerland and the Grisons from 11 to 21 December 2021. The world’s largest winter multi-sport event for students will see competitors challenge for 60 sets of medals across 10 sports over 11 days of competition. “It is a privilege to have gained a second chance through the postponement and to have been able to give everyone involved something to aim for during this challenging time,” says Managing Director Urs Hunkeler. Since the decision to postpone was made at the start of November 2020, the Organising Committee has worked hard to adapt the plans to the new dates. “Our priorities have been developing the new competition programme, checking our concepts, renewing all of our contracts and revising the budget,” explains Hunkeler. Attractive competition programme Urs Hunkeler is particularly delighted that despite the postponement, the team has been able to retain all ten sports on the programme. “It was never guaranteed for many reasons, such as the fact that the Olympic Games are scheduled in February 2022. December 2021 was therefore selected as the best option for hosting the event.

Serguei Charikov (RUS) died on 6 th June 2015 in Moscow in a car accident, shortly before he could celebrate his 41 st birthday. A three time Olympian with two Olympic gold medals, one of the best sabre fencers in the world, started fencing at the age of 12.

    Press Release Date: 24 February 2020 FISU Executive Committee meets in Lausanne The new FISU Executive Committee members, elected in November 2019, convened for their first meeting on 21-22 February, to set the agenda for 2020 and beyond. LAUSANNE – FISU President Oleg Matytsin opened the first FISU Executive Committee meeting of the newly elected members. Matytsin, recently appointed Russian Minister of Sport, welcomed the new members and expressed regret that some colleagues were not able to join the meeting due to the coronavirus outbreak. FISU Secretary General-CEO Eric Saintrond then presented his report, starting with the new FISU visual identity. The Secretary General’s report included major contracts that FISU has signed with Eurosport, Sport ID and the International Testing Agency. “The International Testing Agency will allow us to better manage our doping control efforts to ensure clean sport across university sports events,” Saintrond said. Eurosport partnership The 2020-2023 partnership with Eurosport will include television coverage of FISU sports events, starting with the Lucerne 2021 Winter Universiade and continuing through the FISU World University Games in Chengdu 2021, Ekaterinburg 2023 and Lake Placid 2023. The collaboration will also include digital advertising and activation, livestreaming and video on demand and a global presence of university sports on Eurosport's digital channels.
