30-FOR-30 Canyon Barry became the first player to record two-or-more 30+ point games in a single season since former CofC star and NBA Draft pick Andrew Goudelock did so in 2010-11. Goudelock turned in seven of his eight career 30+ point games that season including a CofC NCAA Division I single-game record of 39 versus Dayton in the NIT First Round on March 15, 2011. Barry has twice knocked down a career-high of 31 points against South Carolina State on Nov. 13 and at Davidson on Nov. 21. He recorded his third 30-point outing of the season with a game-high 30 points (including 25 first-half points) at Campbell on Dec. 22.

COUGARS SIGN IN-STATE RECRUIT GOODWIN Head Coach Earl Grant announced the signing of in-state recruit Chevez Goodwin (pronounced SHUH-vezz) on the opening day of the fall early signing period on Nov. 11. Goodwin, a 6-foot-9, 205-pound power forward out of Hammond School in Columbia, S.C., averaged 12.6 points and 9.4 rebounds leading the Skyhawks to the Class 3A Championship title under head coach and CofC alumnus Mark McClam (1979-82) last season. He also had a breakout spring and summer with his AAU team, Upward Stars, coached by Kyle Gaither and Curtis Wheeler.

“We are ecstatic about Chevez Goodwin’s signing,” Grant said. “It is certainly a plus when you can add someone with his height and his skill level to your team. He will bring a different dimension to our program as well as to the CAA. Chevez is going to be a great player at the College of Charleston. When I was hired here at College of Charleston, we wanted to make the state of South Carolina a big emphasis in our recruiting. We were looking for size in the state, saw Chevez at an AAU Tournament and fell in love with him. He was recruited at a high level and we are very fortunate to sign him.”

CAMPBELL RECAP College of Charleston 86, Campbell 68 • For the fifth time this season, CofC went with the starting five of junior Payton Hulsey, junior Canyon Barry, sophomore Cameron Johnson, freshman Jarrell Brantley and redshirt freshman Nick Harris (3-1). • With the win, College of Charleston now leads 13-4 in the all-time series with Campbell. It marked the Cougars’ first road trip to Buies Creek since 1998 and eighth overall (6-2). They extended their win streak to 12 consecutive games in the series with 10 of those being decided in double figures. • The Cougars registered their second-highest scoring output of the season (86 points) at Campbell as well as shot their second-best percentages from the field (57.9%) and beyond the arc (47.4%). • Canyon Barry turned in his third career 30-point outing with a game-high 30 points at Campbell. It was one point shy of his career high of 31 set at Davidson and South Carolina State in November. He extended his double-digit scoring streak to seven games. Barry tied a career-best going 5-for-9 from three-point range. • Payton Hulsey had a near double-double performance with nine points and a career-and game-high 12 rebounds at Campbell. He also dished out four assists and made three steals. • Cameron Johnson registered his eighth game this season in double figures with 15 points along with four assists at Campbell. • Marquise Pointer tied his career high with 16 points off the bench against Campbell. He has now reached double figures in six games this season including the last three contests.

COUGAR SIDEBARS • College of Charleston as well as the other CAA-member schools will play a Thursday/Saturday conference schedule this season, with a handful of games moving a day to accommodate television. CofC (LSU) is one of four league schools to have posted victories over Power 5 conference opponents this season next to Northeastern (No. 15 Miami), William & Mary (NC State) and Hofstra (Florida State).

• Graduate senior forward James Bourne (Alexandria, Va.) and sophomore walk-on guard Tim Branin II (Richmond, Va.) return home to the Old Dominion State. Bourne transferred from Winthrop and is averaging 4.9 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, while Branin has appeared in two games this season in reserve.

• Both the Cougars and Dukes played and defeated one common non-conference opponent this season in East Carolina. CofC defeated ECU, 77-73 (+4), on Dec. 7 at TD Arena, and JMU beat the Pirates, 67-61 (+6), on Dec. 20 at the JMU Convocation Center.

COUGAR SOUND BITES “Every game in the CAA is tough and every night is a challenge. It’s never a night off. We certainly have our work cut out for us to start off the season with James Madison and William & Mary. We have a lot of challenges ahead, but we are excited about that, because every challenge is an opportunity.” – CofC Head Coach Earl Grant on upcoming CAA play

“JMU is skilled and they have a lot of guys who can make shots. They have good size and return a lot of experience. Coach (Matt) Brady has had the luxury of having everyone in their program, except for one (junior transfer Shakir Brown), together for the last three-to-four years.” – Coach Grant on James Madison

“It certainly helps our confidence and energy level. Certainly, the worst thing to happen is to play that last game before Christmas, and have everyone ticked off and disappointed from a loss. Not only did we win on the road, but we also played well – a lot of our guys played well for us. After the break, it was a different atmosphere. There was a lot of energy when we came back to practice on the 27th – you could see the excitement and anticipation going into this new season.” – Coach Grant on going into the winter break with a win at Campbell

“They (Campbell) played a match-up zone and it’s hard to run a lot of set plays. He (Barry) got so many points in transition. Our defense was so good. His teammates were finding him and he made some three-point shots.” – Coach Grant on Canyon Barry scoring 25 first-half points at Campbell

“We will continue to get better. We had a pretty good non-conference schedule to prepare us. It was tough and we were able to have some success (against LSU and Navy among others). Now, it’s a new season. We are in our third year as members of the conference, so the next step for us is to have success in the CAA.” – Coach Grant on exceeding expectations in non-conference play and have it translate into CAA play

“Both games will present big challenges for us. But, we have prepared ourselves for this moment of the season, especially with our play in the non-conference. JMU is really skilled and executes really well. But, if we do what we need to do and stick to what we know, we will do well this week.” – CofC Freshman Forward Jarrell Brantley on opening conference play this week against two of the top teams in the league in JMU and William & Mary 2015-16 College of Charleston Basketball GAME NOTES
