The Challenge of the Jesus Seminar to Biblical Je' Adayibe The Challenge o[the Jesus Seminar (Or Africa 77 THE CHALLENGE OF THE JESUS SEMINAR TO BffiLICAL SCHOLARSHIP IN AFRICA Gwamna Dogara Je'Adayibe In this article Dr. Je 'Adayibe addresses the controversial Jesus Seminar and the critical views that have become rampant in western New Testament studies. Instead of embracing western scholarship wholesale, Dr. Je 'Adayibe challenges African New Testament scholars to engage in New Testament scholarship with their own questions and seek their own answers from Scripture. INTRODUCTION The Jesus Seminar has emerged in the last two decades as the most controversial ann of New Testament scholarship. From 1985, the Jesus Seminar is the most celebrated offshoot of a ~te of Jesus Studies which "has made Jesus into a media event." The very critical and controversial views and methodologies adopted by the Jesus Seminar have once again brought the need for closer New Testament studies into the front burner. The precursors of critical New Testament Studies produced the various "quests" for the "historical Jesus" with Rudolf Bultmann and Albert Schweitzer as its indisputable champions. Some of these works include: Elizabeth Schussler Fiorenza, Jesus: Miriam 's Child and Sophia 's Prophet, Burton Maclc, A Myth of Innocence: Mark and Christian Origins; Barbara Thiering's, Jesus and the Riddle of the Dead Sea &rolls: Unlocking the Secrets of His life; and her, Jesus the Man: A New Interpretation from the Dead Sea &rolls; Marcus Borg, Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time; John Dominic Crossan, Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography; Morton Smith, Jesus the Magician; and similar others.2 These works seem to have provided the launching pad for the Jesus Seminar adventure. Several observations and questions have been raised in respect of the objectivity, methodology and scholarship merit of the Jesus Seminar. One of such concerted reactions is the Jesus Under Fire, edited by Michael J. Wilkins and J.P. Moreland, in which several evangelical biblical scholars have reacted variously to the JeSus Seminar, laying bare the Seminar's spurious arguments, methodology and their conclusions. Even Ben Witherington m has devoted a chapter on the "Jesus of the Jesus Seminar'' in his The Jesus Quest: The Third Search for the Jew ofNazareth.3 As the new discourse on the "Jesus Quest" or the "Jesus Debate" rages on, "what is rather striking is that it leaves out many older scholars, including many from Europe and the Third World."4 The main interest and the thrust of this paper is drawn from the fact that, again, it is from the so-called West that this critical and some what "dangerous" scholarship is being born, nurtured and sustained, for the possible exportation to the Third World, including Africa. Any serious Biblical scholar in Africa, therefore, needs to be worried about the transportation of this approach to biblical scholarship in our Seminaries, Bible Colleges and Universities. This paper seeks to discuss the Jesus Seminar, their origin, aims, methodologies and 2 Ibid. p. 16. N. T. The insigbts drawn therefrom might also help us to re-appraise new trends in New Testament scholarship generally. THE JESUS SEMINAR Origin The Jesus Seminar began in 1985 led by Robert Funk. Other Board Members include: John Dominic Crossan, Fred Francis, Burton Mack, and Robert Tannehill. These and other members (Fellows) of the Jesus Seminar are mostly liberal scholars, trained in the most h"beral theological institutions in America.5 As Craig L. Blomberg has noted, "the Jesus Seminar does not come anywhere close to refl~ an adequate cross-section of contemporary New Testament scholars. ..6 At best, the Seminar "involves not only Protestants and Catholics, but also Jews, New Agers, and !FJ>le of no religious commitment, including Marxists and Atheists." The members of the Jesus Seminar derive their motivation from some basic aims and presuppositions which guide their methodology as well. The Aims Include: i. To find out the "real facts" about Jesus, that is, it's own version of the so-called "quest of the historical Jesus." ii. To consider the identity of Jesus and the authenticity of the Gospel records. ill. To replace the Church's picture of Jesus with a reconstruction it deemed more historically adequate and more serviceable to life in the world today. 5 Tim Lahaye, JesJ~S: Who is He? Funk says of the Jesus Seminar, that, "we need a new narrative of Jesus, a new gospel, if you will, that places Jesus differently in the grand scheme, the epic story. "8 The Presuppositions Are That: i. The supernatural cannot occur. Thus, they deny the historic Christian faith. including the virgin birth, the deity of Christ, His substitutionary atonement, His resurrection from the dead and His ascension into heaven.9 ii. The witness of the gospels' writers cannot be accepted because they are passionately committed to what they are saying. Passionate witnesses, the Fellows assume, distort the evidence. iii. The traditional Christianity is simply a colossal mistake, and the gospels are gross misrepresentations of Jesus. Thus, the Jesus Seminar "hails itself as liberator from the 'tyranny,' 'oppression,' and 'blindness' of Jesus' Babylonian captivity by Orthodox Christianity." 10 Today, the two famous published works under the auspices of the Jesus Seminar smnmarise their goals, methodology, findings and conclusions. They are: The Five Gospels: The Search for the Authentic Words of Jesus - A New Translation and Commentary (Macmillan 1993); and The Acts of Jesus: The Search for the Authentic Deeds of Jesus, {Harper Collins, 1998). They are their own standmd translation called the &holars Version (SV) of the Bible. These two books provide us some highlights into understanding the Jesus Seminar and their "successes" so far, which have also elicited reactions from other Biblical scholars. Other similar works have been published by some Fellows of the Jesus Seminar. Je' Adayibe The Challenge o(the Jesus Seminar {Or Aftica 81 Methodology What has attracted considerable interest to the Jesus Seminar is their methodology of research which has resulted into their findings and conclusions. The Jesus Seminar uses the historical method of research along with the social-scientific criticism. The computer also plays an important role in their calculations. The Jesus Seminar meet to present papers, discuss texts, and "then, with self-conscious theatricality, vote on blocks of text (sometimes as entire section, sometimes as little as a word or two) using coloured beads."11 The colour codes signify the following: i. Casting a red bead means that the scholar thinks Jesus said this or at least something very much like it. ii. Pink signals that he probably said that. iii. Gray means that Jesus probably did not say this. but maybe something of his thought hides obscurely behind the passage. iv. Black means that Jesus did not say this at all. D.A. Carson has provided a hint as to how their calculations are made: On the grade point average scheme, Red = 3, Pink = 2, Gray = I and Black = 0. The ballots are added up and divided by the number of votes cast in order to ascertain the weighted average. The scale is then converted to percentages. For a text to be printed in red, it has to rate .7501 or higher. Pink print reflects .5001 to .7500, gray ranges from .2501 or .5000, and black .2500 or under.12 After subjecting the gospels to this method, the following were their findings: i. In the overall, 82% of Jesus' words in Matthew, Matt., Luke and John were judged inauthentic. ii. Only 18% of the sayings of Jesus are lettered red, that is, those that Jesus is believed to have truly said. They form the fifteen sayings of Jesus, all of which are short and pungent remarks. 11 D.A. Does President of the United States and the Executive Branch alone hold the power? Do Congress and the Courts hold the power? Do the many departments and agencies of our government, including the military, hold the power? No! None of them do…on their own.

That didn’t happen. According to The Jesus Seminar – “Among the findings is that, in the judgment of the Jesus Seminar Fellows, about 18 percent of the sayings and 16 percent of the deeds attributed to Jesus in the gospels are authentic.” Another way of understanding that statement is that 82 percent of the sayings and 84 percent of the deeds attributed to Jesus in the Gospels are NOT authentic. Let that sink in for a minute ….     A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON JOHN THE BAPTIST'S FAILURE TO SUPPORT JESUS Laurent Guymot At the heart of all dialogues between Christians and Jews there is, inevitably, the question of the Messiah: "Are you he who is to come, or shall we wait for another?" —Jürgen Moltmann pplied to the New Testament, some of the tasks of the historical- critical method are to separate layers of redaction work in the Gospels, to Adetermine the oldest strata of tradition, and to present the most probably authentic words of Jesus and the events of his life. Conservative evangelical Christians are generally hostile to such an approach and insist that the complete New Testament is inspired and historically true. One possible meeting point between conservatives and historically-minded liberals which has gained some recent support is, to assert that since Christianity is founded on the resurrected Jesus, it need not be threatened by historical inquiry into Jesus' earthly ministry. One reason is sufficient, in my eyes, to justify the historical-critical method as part of Unificationist studies. Unificationism claims to rely not only on revelation but also on science, and it cannot be denied that archeology and critical exegesis, the basic tools of historical research, are scientific in nature. Could you? Answer: Your quote from Matthew 28:6 and its use of the verb egeirō in the passive is not in question and neither, as we saw, is the use of that same verb in Paul’s 1 Cor 15:12–15, with its reciprocity between Jesus’ resurrection and the universal resurrection of the dead (anastasis nekrōn). The point is whether those first Messianic/Christic-Jewish companions of Jesus could have ever imagined resurrection as an individual resurrection for Jesus alone rather than as the start of the universal resurrection now, as an ongoing and developing through-time process rather than as a single end-time product. My argument is that they could not do so, did not do so, and would have found the consequent Western iconographic tradition (were they to have seen it!) to be individual Ascension not Universal Resurrection. Question 17 I had associated the word Ascension with Acts 1:10 (“And while they were gazing into heaven as he went…”, RSV). Answer: You are correct that we have a standard first-century Ascension described both in Luke 24:51 (“was carried up”) and Acts 1:9 (“he was lifted up”) so that Luke-Acts, and Luke-Acts alone, makes a clear and chronological distinction between Resurrection (“was raised up”) and Ascension.

    Rediscovering the Historical Jesus: Presuppositions and Pretensions of the Jesus Seminar Dr. William Lane Craig William Lane Craig is Research Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology in La Mirada, California. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife Jan and their two teenage children Charity and John. At the age of sixteen as a junior in high school, he first heard the message of the Christian gospel and yielded his life to Christ. Dr. Craig pursued his undergraduate studies at Wheaton College (B.A. 1971) and graduate studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (M.A. 1974; M.A. 1975), the University of Birmingham (England) (Ph.D. 1977), and the University of Munich (Germany) (D.Theol. 1984). From 1980-86 he taught Philosophy of Religion at Trinity, during which time he and Jan started their family. In 1987 they moved to Brussels, Belgium, where Dr. Craig pursued research at the University of Louvain until 1994. In this first part of a two-part article, the presuppositions and pretentions of the Jesus Seminar are exposited and assessed. It is found that the principal presuppositions of (i) scientific naturalism, (ii) the primacy of the apocryphal gospels, and (iii) the necessity of a politically correct Jesus are unjustified and issue in a distorted portrait of the historical Jesus. Although the Jesus Seminar makes a pretention of speaking for scholarship on the quest of the historical Jesus, it is shown that in fact it is a small body of critics in pursuit of a cultural agenda.     The historical Jesus and the search for God Stephen J Patterson Eden Theological'Seminary St Louis, Missouri, USA Abstract Since the advent of the first quest for the historical Jesus in the nine­ teenth century, theologians have felt compelled to accept as normative either the Jesus of history (so Liberal Theology) or the Christ offaith (so Keryg11l/ltic Theology). This choice is a false one, for the structure of early Christian faith involves both historical and confessional elements in the creation of meaningful theological discourse. We can recover the poetics of that discourse if we clearly distinguish between the historical and ccnfessional elements in the gospels, and place them once again in a dialectical relationship. In this way, the quest for the historical Jesus may retain its character as an historical discipline, and yet still prove fruitful for critical theological reflection. Anyone who has followed the debate about the historical Jesus during the last decade must have been astonished or even horrified to observe how, as in a volcanic area, the earth was suddenly everywhere spewing forth fire, smoke, and differently-sized masses of lava, where, for a gene­ ration past, pleasant gardens had been planted on the slopes of ancient craters. Exegetes and systematic theologians, Protestants and Catholics, one's own school and its opponents (not least what was once the New World), our students and even the so-called lay people have been drawn into the uproar and have made strenuous efforts to extend the fireworks display.     "Discovering the Dead Sea Scrolls on the High Street: Popular Perspectives on Ancient Texts" by Rev Dr Alistair I. Wilson, Highland Theological College, Dingwall Introduction 1997 marked (almost certainly) the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of the first Dead Sea Scrolls, and so, once again, the significance of these ancient documents is a matter of great public interest. Already, volumes are being published to mark this jubilee in which highly competent scholars discuss questions of a technical nature.1 A recent (May 1998) international conference held at New College, Edinburgh, indicates that academic interest is as strong in Scotland as in the rest of the world. However, it is not only specialists who are interested in the Dead Sea Scrolls (hereafter, DSS). There is widespread public interest in the subject also, and this, in certain respects, is something to be warmly welcomed. This is true simply because of the value of the DSS to archaeology; they have been described as 'the greatest MS [manuscript] discovery of modern times',2 and it is always valuable to be aware of developments in our knowledge of the ancient world. However, the fact that during the 1990s the Dead Sea Scrolls have been at the centre of some of the most startling, dramatic, and controversial events imaginable, leading to massive publicity in both the academic and popular press, has surely added to the public interest in these documents. 1 One of the first of these is the important volume The Scrolls and the Scriptures, edited by S.     BOOK REVIEWS REVIEW OF WILLIAM ARNAL, THE SYMBOLIC JESUS: HISTORICAL SCHOLARSHIP, JUDAISM AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF IDENTITY (RELIGION IN CULTURE: STUDIES IN SOCIAL CONTEST AND CONSTRUCTION, LONDON: EQUINOX, 2005) Richard Walsh, Methodist University Arnal challenges the recent accusations that the historical Jesuses of scholars like Mack, Crossan, Horsley, Vaage, and the Jesus Seminar are un-Jewish and, therefore, at least implicitly complicit with anti-Semitism. Arnal readily acknowledges the presence of anti-Semitism today (e.g., in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ) and in the past in New Testament scholarship (e.g., in the work of Walter Grundmann). Arnal also finds tendencies toward anti-Semitism in Christian anti- Judaism and in the apologetic scholarship that asserts Jesus’ uniqueness and accordingly distin- guishes him from his environment. Despite this ‘bad karma,’ however, he argues that scholarship has improved in the last thirty years, particularly by making Jesus’ Jewishness central to histor- ical reconstruction and by thereby normalizing Jesus as a part of his world, rather than distin- guishing him from it. Today, the Jewish Jesus is simply no longer a matter of academic debate. Instead, the debate is now about what kind of Jew the historical Jesus was. In this context, the accusation that some scholars produce un-Jewish Jesuses is a ‘straw man,’ which dismisses the accused scholars’ hypo- thesis without discussion. Moreover, the accusation ignores debates about the ethnic and religious character of the Galilee, the fluidity of ancient markers of Judaism (see Jonathan Z. Smith, Imagining Religion), and, in particular, the comparative nature of Mack’s Cynic hypothesis.

    T The Ministry of the Whole People of God in a Mainline Congregation: A Critical Exploration Norman Maciver Introduction T The primary purpose of this project was to look critically at the story of one ordinary congregation’s experience of ministry and, in so doing, to discover if there are lessons to be learned that will resource its mission in the immediate and long-term future. This cannot be done without a real understanding of the historical, ecclesiastical, cultural and missiological environment in which we have lived and that forms the context of our current challenges. At the same time, we want to hear and pay attention to the perception that others have of our ministry and weave these perceptions into our analysis to be an effective agent of mission in the twenty-first century. My methodology in approaching the project is a praxis-reflection one. This is in the nature of a case study beginning from our own story and, by reflecting on it, discerning the theological issues involved and setting them in the context of our cultural reality and pastoral ministry. What have we in fact been doing and how does a theological study of both the bible and church history impinge on and develop our ministry as that of the ministry of the whole people of God in our situation? In a real sense, by prioritising human experience and following the methods that are central to the biblical ministry and that have been rediscovered in recent years in the South American model of liberation theology, the rich tapestry that evolves from our practice, informed by a biblical theology will, therefore, help us face the resultant new challenge in our practice.
