Once again, from the many community facilities remain closed and organizations are not meeting. So we are providing minimal calendar listings as well as contact phone numbers for you. Publisher It’s August; do you want to talk about the weather? Of course, we should not be surprised about the heat and rain, it happens every year. But it sure keeps our area lush and green! Thank goodness for fans and air conditioning. Over the more than 2 decades we have been publishing, we have always avoided any political topics. However, it’s time to say something about kindness and civility. We are bombarded with news that depicts anger and fosters divi- siveness. As a Vietnam era veteran, I have seen how this can poison our country and all I ask is that you don’t adhere to that toxic mentality and let civility start with you. In an effort to help reduce cabin fever, we have added a little more entertainment content this month. Enjoy our August issue. Stay safe and see you next month.

20 | www.seniorscenemag.com | August 2020 Greetings, Every day I listen to experts talking about the coronavirus pandemic, but all they have done is cause confusion. Using my own logic, I believe the best way to handle this virus is to wear a mask, practice social distancing as best we can, and stay at home if at all possible, especially seniors. Thanks to modern technology, it is possible for you to stay informed, even from home. We have started a new video series hosted by our Media Director, Kerry Fink. Look for Helping Seniors Updates at www. HelpingSeniorsofBrevard.org , on our YouTube channel, Facebook page and/or any of our social media locations every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoon. We started these updates so that we could all be more aware of available services, know what is happening, and access new information on anything that assists seniors. These updates have been well received, so we have made them a regular part of our educational media line-up. The car raffle drawing has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2020, at the American Muscle Car Museum. For years we have conducted an annual fund drive in late summer. This year we are doing a second mailing of car raffle tickets instead, so your annual donation will also enter you into the raffle. Tickets are $25 each or 5 tickets for a $100 donation. This coronavirus epidemic has truly upset many non profit fundraising efforts, so we ask that you help us with a second ticket donation if at all possible. We know many possible donors were awaiting the new drawing date, so now you have it. As president of the organization, I assure you that we need your financial support, whether as a donor, ticket donor, or sponsor. Your support will keep us helping seniors and those who care for them and will be much appreciated. Hope to see you at the car raffle drawing.

he new ways we shop for groceries is only the tip of the iceberg this year. Thanks to the coronavirus, there are a number of other things we will likely end up doing Tin a different way. Many of us have put aside one item on our annual to-do list: filing our taxes. The tax due date was pushed back to July 15, and that date is coming up quickly. If you'll owe taxes and generally send in a cashier's check with your return, you'll need to get that in advance if you don't want to stand in line in your bank. Many banks are providing services through the drive-up window. Call to ask if you can arrange for a cashier's check to be waiting for you at the drive-up. Then, to keep from standing in line at the post office to send it certified mail, check with your UPS store. Many of them can do the full array of post office services, and they're likely to be less busy. Something else to consider: When it's time to vote this year, consider whether you'd rather vote by absentee ballot than stand in line. Call your town office and find out how early you need to send in your request for a ballot, as well as return the ballot itself. Ask, too, whether you should return your ballot by mail or if it must be hand delivered to election officials. A number of election offices have secured drop boxes (they look like mail boxes) outside the building. Many states also have in-person early voting during a designated pre- election day period. If you typically shop the Amazon Prime Day in July, internet rumors say that it likely won't take place until August or September. Keep an eye on Amazon for news about this. If you find one of these programs on your Mac, it would be advisable to do a thorough security scan of your entire computer and have a discussion about the dangers of torrent downloads with the family member that is using it. The Best Protection No matter which ransomware strain hits you, your choices are either to pay the ransom or lose the files forever, unless you have a detached or off-site backup. Anything attached to your computer such as an external hard drive or USB drive will be locked down by the malware, which is why online backups are very effective against this growing threat.
