Strickland turns sure loss into victory Earl Strickland was the pre-tournament favorite at the Clyde Childress Open. After five sessions it was even more evident as he shot a class above the rest of the field averaging an .885 TPA. Keith McCready on Presents the other hand wasn't shooting aa well, but continued to win despite a mediocre .823 TPA. As these two players squared off for the first time, they were the two remaining players in the winner's bracket. * Strickland played his worst set of the tournament (.810), while McCready played quite well (.857) beat ing Earl II-B and sending him to the loser's bracket. HOTEL' C4SINC The rumblings were that McCready had Strickland's "number"! Earl then polished off third place finisher Oavid Howard 11-2 with an .899 bringing about the final confrontation(s) between himself and McCready. OPEN 9 BALL Earl, of course, had to beat Keith twice. After 40 minutes, the score was 10-9, Keith's favor (no slow TOURNAMENT play here). McCready then made two balls on the break, ran another three, and it looked like it was all over but the shoutin'. Not so fast...Keith missed JUNE 1-8, 1985 an easy 5 ball with an equally easy run out! Needless to say, Keith was doomed. Earl won that set, and shot RENO, NEVADA his normal game in the final set (.876) taking the lead 5-0, then 9-2, and finally even after a stong drive by McCready, cashed in at 11-6 for the $10,000 first prize plus a $3,000 ring. MENS DIVISION Notable matches $300 ENTRY There were countless sessions deserving of mention, $20,000 ADDED but limited space forces me to review only a few. • 10 Secrets of a Good Stroke” ILLUSTRATED PRINCIPLES Dr
“10 Secrets of a Good Stroke” ILLUSTRATED PRINCIPLES Dr. Dave Alciatore, PhD Supporting narrated video (NV) demonstrations, high-speed video (HSV) clips, technical proofs (TP), and all past articles are available online at billiards.colostate.edu. Reference numbers used in the articles help you locate the resources on the website. Recently, I posted online video NV J.66 covering the generally recommended “best practices” for the stroke. In this article, I summarize important highlights from the video. Before I begin, I want to be clear that as long as a stroke is accurate and consistent with both direction and speed, it is a good stroke, even if you pump your stroke with a loose wrist like Francisco Bustamante, or use a sidearm stroke with lots of “body English” like Keith McCready, or use a short, punchy stroke with unnecessary elbow motion like Allen Hopkins, or have a bent and locked wrist like John Schmidt (see the video for examples of each of these stroke types). All these players are accurate and consistent, and that is all that really matters, so there would be no reason for them to change. However, if you have trouble with stroke consistency or accuracy, it might help to try to incorporation some of the following stroke “best practices” into your game. 1. Set and Check I will assume you are already in a good stance after a purposeful pre-shot routine. If you need help with these things, see the links in the NV J.66 video description. As shown in Image 1, in the “set” position, with the tip close to the cue ball (CB), the forearm should be perpendicular to the cue with the cue as level as possible.
