HelmS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION SIXTEENTH ANNUAL (1952 EDITION) SOUTHERN CALIFoRniA PREP SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD RECORD T his record book, which lists the foremost performances by Southern California's high school track and field athletes for the 1952 season, is the sixteenth annual edition prepared and issued by the Helms Athletic Foundation, in the interest of high school athletics. The facts and records listed in this booklet have been gathered from sources which are believed-to be authentic* Information has been provided by high school coaches, and many records have been obtained from Southern California newspapers. Helms athletic Foundation, with offices in Helms Hall, Los Angeles 34> California, is sponsored by Paul H. Helms. The foundation was established on October 15, 1936. One of the purposes of Helms Athletic Foundation is that of recording the achievements of athletes, and athletic teams in all sports and in all divisions. This Southern California Prep School Track and Field Record, as are all athletic record books of similar nature, are prepared by the Helms Athletic Foundation, under the supervision of 17.R.-Bill Schroeder, I Managing Director, and are distributed to schools, the press, radio, television, athletic coaches and officials, without charge. Special credit for the development of this track and field record goes to Dick Bank, demon statistician. Valuable assistance was also given by AI Krebs of the Los Angeles Examiner. LAVERN SMITH, FERNANDO LEDESMA NAMED TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETES OF THE YEAR FOR 1952 LaVern Smith, Los Angeles City Track and Field High Jump Champion, and Fernando Ledesma, California State and C.I.F. One- Mile Run Champion, were chosen for Helms Athletic Foundation All Southern California Board of Track and Field Athlete of the Year honors for the 1952 season. Smith was named Athlete of the Year in the Los Angeles City High School division, while Ledesma was named Southern California C.I.F. High School Track and Field Athlete of the Year. - Ledesma took first place in-the one-mile run at the State meet, held at Los Angeles, May 24, 1952. He ran the mile in 4:23.2, a new State meet record. Ledesma also won the C.I.F. Southern Section one-mile run, with a time of 4:25.3. Smith won'the All-Los Angeles City High Jump title, with a jump of 6-6 3/4, a new Los Angeles City High School Meet Record. Smith also took second place in the high jump at the State Track and Field Meet with a leap of 6-4 1/2. Ledesma was coached by Ernst Hartmann, who has coached his Compton team to C.I.F. championships in 1940 and 1952. Hartmannfs squad tied for the title in 1951. Smith was coached by Joe Barry and Estel Johnson, who have coached Jefferson High School to City titles the last four years• 1 HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION 1952 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TRACK & FIELD BOOK F jor having been chosen All-Southern California Board of Track 1 and Field Athletes of the Year for 1952, Compton's Fernando Ledesma and Jefferson's LaVern Smith have had their names engraved upon the Paul H. Helms Trophy which is lodged in Helms Hall, in the Prep School Hall of Fame section, Fernando Ledesma's name has also been engraved upon the Charles VJ, Paddock Memorial Trophy, and LaVern Smith's name has been engraved upon the Fred W. Kelly Trophy, both of which are lodged in Helms Hall. Ledesma and Smith were both the recipients of the Helms Athletic Foundation Athlete of the Year medal award. Selection of Smith and Ledesma as Athletes of the Year was made by members of the Helms Athletic Foundation's All-Southern California Board of Athletics. This Board has made selections-since 1937. Mem- bers who made 1952 selections were: John de la Vega, hory Kapp, Ralph Alexander, Jerry Ueinerj Bill Hollohani wanie Pineda, lluss Gochran, Tom Burdick, Eddie West, Ward Gillilan, Francis Tuckwiler, Pete Kokon, Bill Whitney, and Bill Schroeder, Chairman.
