The National Weather Service said this week’s storm was just slightly less powerful than the 2011 event, but much larger and more widespread. Davis County’s east bench is not a stranger to the canyon winds, often called East Winds, but Tuesday’s storm was certainly stronger than the average wind storm. Schools and many government offices were closed, some staying shut on Wednesday as well. Neighborhoods looked like they’d been hit by a hurricane, as winds reached 70 miles per hour in much of the county between Layton and North Salt Lake, with one gust recorded at 99 mph near Park Lane in Farmington. At one point, power was out to over 170,000 homes and businesses, mostly in Davis County. As of Wednesday at noon, more than 100,000 customers were yet to have power restored. Rocky Mountain Power officials said it might not be fully resorted until the end of the week in some cases. Centerville City Mayor Clark Wilkinson declared a State of Emergency in the community on Tuesday afternoon, as streets were littered with branches and leaves and fallen tree limbs. The cleanup effort in that community was still just getting started on Wednesday, even as canyon winds continued to gust up to 50-60 mph. Volunteers were plentiful, many with chainsaws to cut fallen trees into smaller pieces and to clean up properties. By mid-afternoon, a steady line of pickup trucks made their way to the Davis Landfill with remnants of trees and gardens. Nathan Rich, exec- utive director of the Wasatch Integrated Waste Management District, announced that for the next two weeks (starting on Sept. 9), the District is waiving fees for clean green waste delivered to the Davis Landfill by residents of the District. The fee waiver does not apply to businesses or commer- cial customers. Residential customers will need to show proof of residency to receive the fee waiver. He also said there is no current plan for a curbside pickup program, meaning residents will have to find ways to get their refuse to the landfill. “It’s been a long time since we’ve seen an event like this one,” said Gary Hill, Bountiful city man- ager. For the first time, this committee, comprised of leading doctors and nutrition scientists, included nutritional guidance for younger children. The committee recommends eggs as a first food for babies and toddlers since they provide eight essential nutrients that can help build a healthy foundation for life at a time when every bite counts. Eggs provide nutrition for children and moms-to- be, as well. However, the report found most pregnant women and kids need more choline – an essential nutrient critical for brain health – in their diets. According to research published in the “Journal of the American College of Nutrition,” 92% of pregnant women don’t get enough choline in their diets. Choosing foods high in choline, like eggs, can help pregnant women consume enough of this essential nutrient, helping a baby’s brain and spinal cord develop properly. Just two eggs provide more than half of the recommended daily amount of choline.
