Welcome to the April edition and thank you to Alex Blackman for his contribution. The April edition traditionally includes the group photo and report on the London Marathon, however I have decided to park this to the next edition, as this event has been overshadowed by recent the death of Ted Kraft.

Eulogy for Ted on behalf of Scarborough Athletic Club by Mick Thompson

“ I would just like to say a few words about Ted who has been a club member and also a good friend since he joined the club around 13 years ago. Before I share some of my personal memories, I must just mention some of his most notable athletic achievements during this time with the club.

Ted was always very modest about what he achieved, and so much so that when as the Editor of the Club Magazine, I invited him to provide a Mini Biography which is a regular magazine item, he became the only person in 10 years to decline the offer - it was a little like somebody turning down an appearance on ‘This is Your Life’ or if you cannot remember that far back – ‘Desert Island Discs’!

Ted started running when he was 50 just for fun. As the many photographs of him smiling broadly at races will testify, he certainly achieved his aim!. He soon became a valued club member and after a 10 kilometre road race at Tholthorpe, he started to compete at cross country, track meetings and fell racing.

At cross country he soon progressed to often becoming the first in his age group, and a scoring member of the men’s team. At track meetings he took on the steeplechase which took some guts especially at his age, as very few others who were far younger ever fancied it! At fell racing would also be first in his age group and a team scorer at local league fixtures.

He also competed in a World Masters Mountain Running Championship when it was held in Keswick. Whilst he never boasted, he teased his son James about this in that he alone had competed in a World Championship Race!

When Ted joined the ranks of the Over-55s, he started to dominate in his new age group and was often the first aged Over-55 finisher at cross country league fixtures, and won overall league age group titles.

In his last two years in this age group, Ted achieved his best ever times at 10 kilometre road races, which were exceptionally good. In 2013 his fastest time was only bettered by five out of 58 male club runners, one of whom was his son James, and all five were very much younger.

When he joined the Over-60 age group, which was sadly just before he was diagnosed with cancer, he started to finish first in his new age group at Fell and at Cross Country Leagues, but his best achievement was when he competed in his first ever road half marathon at York. He was not only the first of 14 younger club members and first over 60 in a race with a massive field, but his time was the second fastest by any athlete over the age of 60 that year in the North of . No doubt if his illness had not intervened, he would soon have become the fastest.

Some of my earliest memories involved travelling with Ted to cross country races. Not only was he very good company, but as he was a skilled motor mechanic, when it was my turn to drive, it was as though I had an AA Breakdown guy with me! It actually did become handy once when a problem arose at a snowbound Thixendale!

At one time I was an avid reader of running magazines, and received copies of American ones from a friend and also subscribed to others. The latest ideas on how to run faster would be debated with Ted at length. Lovely as this was, I could have saved money by just following what Ted did in training – albeit not quite at the same speed!

I often saw Ted running with his son James over tracks near Seamer towards Staxton. One day when Ted was running on his own, he joined me for a short part of the track. He very kindly tried his best to adjust to my pace, which was probably the slowest he had ever run in his career. For me though it became a lot faster than I would otherwise run, and when we split near the end I missed his company but was greatly relieved! I expect Ted soon made up the time lost with me. I wonder how he described his run in his Running Diary – I am sure would have been kind!

Ted and his son James often featured in my Press Reports, some of which those attending the gathering after the service will see. Editor sometimes produced a headline about Kraft slices – as through the opposition!

So finally; Goodbye Ted, you were much loved and respected by me and everyone at Scarborough Athletic Club. You were a good friend, a great athlete and a great man.

Rest in Peace Ted “

Quote of the Month

“ I don’t think about the miles that are coming down the road. I don’t think about the mile I am on now. I don’t think about the miles I have covered. I think about what I am doing right now, just being lost in the moment”

Ryan Hall. USA Olympic Marathon Runner.

Mini Biography

Alex Blackman

Years as a runner; Discounting running Cross Country for School and having a dabble at the 10 years ago I started running as a way to keep fit and a hobby just over 3 years ago.

Best performance; Running my first ever Marathon in 2015 in York in 3:21. I would have been delighted with 3:30 but I think I paced it really well and had absolutely zero left at the end. The feeling I had crossing the line was also unlike any other emotion I have ever experienced!

Others that stand out are finishing 9th at the Dalby No ego head torch run (2015) and making a comeback to the Great North Run 10 years later (in 2016) and nearly knocking 45 minutes off my time!

Favourite race; Easy. The Yorkshire Coast 10k! Not just for the obvious reasons that it is a PB course (if the wind behaves), the scenery and the excellent organisation, but also it is a great tourism boost for the town and brings the best out in the local community.

Favourite female athlete; Paula Radcliffe

Favourite male athlete; Ben Smith

Targets; To get out more than I currently am! Now being a family of 4 is quite demanding on my time but I am still hopeful to get nearer to a 40min 10k and a sub 1:30 Half Marathon.

Ambitions; I have tried for 3 years to get to the London Marathon - one of these years I hope to tick this off my bucket list!

Funniest moment; In 2015 I took part in the Marathon Du Medoc in the south of France. This is the one were you "run" through vineyards "sampling" wines and cheese. This was my first ever Marathon distance though I do not count it as a proper marathon as my Garmin clocked my distance at well over 27 miles by the time I zig zagged over the line! The funniest part was in the last mile where I was really struggling and on the verge or walking when a French man on a bike came along side me and shouted"Allez Alexander, Allez Allez!" I responded that I was rather quite tired and may have to walk - or words to that effect! The man shouted back "Ah English! - come on Alexander do it for the Queen! A bit of a strange thing to shout I know but it worked and I made it to the finish without stopping - or throwing up!
