102 APRIL 2009 APRIL 2009 Message

ARCHDIOCESAN ARCHBISHOP’S MESSAGE 1. “Do as I have done to you” Jn. 13:15 The synoptic gospels give primary importance to the institution of the Holy Eucharist during the Last supper. St. John, in his narrative of the last supper, does not speak about the institution of the Holy Eucharist; instead he Vol. 26 APRIL 2009 No.4 gives a lively narration of the foot washing with a double purpose. Websites: www.archdiocese of pondicherry.com, www.archdiocese pondicherry.com “In this the love of God was made manifest among E-mail: [email protected] us, that God sent his only son into the world, so that The Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions for April - 2009 we might live through him” (1 Jn. 4:9). Christ manifested General : That our Lord may bless farmers with abundant harvests and sensitize God’s love by his words and deeds, by his passion, the richer nations to respond to the ravages of hunger throughout the death and resurrection. Christ manifested his love in a world. Missionary : That Christians who work in areas where conditions are desperate for the special way by his greatest service, which consists poor, the weak, women and children, may be signs of hope due to their in offering his life for the redemption of the world. “The son of man courageous witness to the Gospel of solidarity and love. came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mk. 10:45). Christ always loved the people, especially the Apostles. During the last days of his life on earth, he wanted to manifest his love for the Apostles, for the people utterly and completely, concretely and visibly to the maximum level. The foot - washing, the Holy Eucharist, the sufferings, death on the cross - these are all concrete and tangible expressions of Christ’s love for humankind. “Jesus . . rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel. Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded” (Jn. 13: 4-9). The Apostle, whose feet had been washed, has given this touching description of the foot washing: God at the feet of man, Master at the feet of servant, Teacher at the feet of disciple! How do we feel at such a scene! Do we really understand the great significance of this action of foot washing? The logic of love makes one take the downward path. The one who really loves others, is humble and simple and takes the downward path of solidarity, service, suffering, sacrifice and self sacrifice for the sake of others. Jesus, following the logic of love, DO AS I HAVE DONE TO YOU takes the downward path of self-emptying and self-annihilation (Cf. Ph. 2: 5-8). 103 104 APRIL 2009 Message APRIL 2009 Message

In the foot washing Jesus humiliates himself and takes on = Are we prepared to discontinue our walk in the upward the form of a servant. The foot washing is a prophetic action path of power and pleasure, domineering and constraint, symbolizing Jesus’ death in humiliation for the salvation of others. It division and destruction, arrogant and authoritarian way is a salvific action of Jesus. “If I do not wash you, you have no part of being and doing? in me” (Jn. 13:8). The foot washing is very important and without it = Are we prepared to identify ourselves with the poor, the the disciples cannot have heritage (share) with Jesus. The heritage humble, the weak, the powerless, the downtrodden, the consists in the joy and glory which come from the deep union of the marginalized and do loving and humble service to disciples with Jesus in his humiliation, sufferings and death on the them? cross. The foot washing stresses the necessity of accepting the humiliation of the cross, the scandal of the cross. May Mary, the mother of priests and religious, help us to have an inner attitude of humility and service at all times. The foot washing is a powerful message in action. Humility and service are the key to the massage of the foot washing. By 2. Golden Jubilarian washing the feet of his disciples, Jesus has given a beautiful example Rev.Fr.M.Inniah is completing 50 years of his of loving service, humble service and he commands his disciples to priesthood on 12th April 2009. On 12 April 2009 we shall pray = No messenger is more important than the one who sent him. for him in a special way. = No disciple is greater than his teacher. 3. Clergy Sanctification Day If Jesus, the Lord, the Teacher, the Master has washed the This year the Clergy Sanctification Day will be feet of his disciples, then the disciples are bound to follow the example on Monday, 6th April 2009. All the diocesan priests of their master in doing loving and humble service to one another. and all the religious priests doing ministries in our We priests and religious are invited to read often this passage Archdiocese are greatly exhorted and cordially invited on foot washing with a spirit of humility and faith. Our gathering, however, takes place at a crucial moment in the life of our nation which is facing many challenges: the effects of the worldwide economic meltdown; the scourge of terrorism; the injustice of discrimination based on sex, caste and creed, etc. We are especially concerned about the phenomenon of religious fanaticism and intolerance which has led to repeated attacks and violence against the minorities in India.
