The celebrated Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, in his adaptation of the play, which he created for The National Ballet of Canada in 2011, has given the familiar story a fresh and compelling re-telling. Staying true to the play’s potent theatricality and poignant commingling of romance and tragedy, and plumbing the characters’ emotional depths and human complexity with rare sensitivity, Mr. Ratmansky has created a Romeo and Juliet that is at once bracing and modern in its choreographic vigor, yet timeless in its dramatic urgency.

The ballet relates the story of a young Scottish farmer, James, who, on the eve of their wedding, abandons his betrothed, Effie, after being enticed away to the forest by the ethereal Sylphide of the title. But when the Sylphide dies and Effie marries another, James is left tragically alone. Johan Kobborg’s expressive and attentive new version of the ballet fully embraces the ballet’s Romantic preoccupations, such as the link between the feminine and the supernatural and the hero who forsakes happiness in the real world for an idealized, unearthly beauty. But he also employs the ballet’s legendary virtuosity and technical challenges not just as ends in themselves, but to support and enhance our understanding of the characters, enlivening and vividly reframing the work as few modern productions have. 10 11 Lise-Marie Jourdain Artists of Boston Ballet in Alexander Ekman’s Cacti Canadian Premiere

In addition to the attraction of its principal roles, the female corps de ballet features prominently, too, with the spectral diagonal procession of the Wilis remaining one of the most famous, haunting and moodily evocative images in all of ballet.

Replete with rich psychological and interpretive possibilities as well as thrilling dramatic and technical challenges, Giselle, in all its rapturous, ghostly tragedy, remains one of the great examples of classical narrative ballet, continually revealing fresh aspects of itself to new generations of ballet lovers.
