EPC tailgate dinner at MetLife Stadium hosted by AFM, IPC

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — Eastern Produce Council members gathered here at MetLife Stadium, home of the National Football League’s Giants and Jets, for the council’s October dinner meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 10. The meeting was co-sponsored by Avocados From Mexico and the Idaho Potato Commission, and New York Giants defensive great Carl Banks spoke at the event, using a little bit of produce industry wisdom to explain the Giants’ disastrous 0-5 start to the season.

“Avocado crops tend to yield smaller harvests the year after they produce a lot of fruit,” said Banks. “Think about that. The Giants went to the playoffs last year — there was a lot of fruit. This year, small harvest.

“Do you guys remember the Colorado Beetle? Messed up all the potatoes,” he said. “Well that’s what happened Sunday [Oct. 8], the Colorado Beetle wiped out the Giants’ entire wide receiving corps. I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

EPC President Vic Savanello said the event built upon and authenticated last year’s tailgate-themed dinner at the Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel in Iselin, NJ, which featured former New York Jets defense player Joe Klecko. On a more somber note, Savanello held a moment of silence honoring the deaths of two longtime EPC members: Tommy Krulder, past president of EPC, and Debbie Negron, advertising executive at The Produce News.

Banks was a key player on two Super Bowl-winning Giants teams. He is a member of the NFL 1980s all-decade team and is in the Giants’ Ring of Honor. He currently does color commentary on the Giants’ radio broadcast and is on Sirius NFL Radio and WFAN.
