McMurray Finishes 12th In Rain-Delayed Charlotte Race

Charlotte Motor Speedway (CMS) hosted what is a home race for most NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) teams, and race number one of the Contender 12 Round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Following a dreary rainy day on Saturday, NASCAR was forced to postpone the Bank of America 500 until Sunday afternoon. Starting under bright and sunny conditions, Jamie McMurray quickly picked up positions and drove to a 12th-place finish.

Following a disappointing qualifying result on Thursday night at CMS, the No. 1 team never wavered, turning the focus to Saturday night’s scheduled 334-lap race. Following the two practice sessions on Friday afternoon, the McDonald’s Chevy showed good pace in race-trim.

After the postponement of Saturday’s scheduled race to Sunday, NSCS teams were faced with racing with the unknown conditions of mid-day sunny weather, versus the cooler night temperatures at CMS. The variables never phased the No. 1 team as McMurray quickly advanced through the field, competing over half of the race (173 laps) among the top- 15, ultimately finishing with a 12th-place result.

With his finish, McMurray remains 11th in the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings.

NOTES OF INTEREST  McMurray was the biggest mover of the day, improving 18 positions from start to finish  McMurray ranked third for most green flag passes with 124  The caution was shown nine times for a total of 44 laps  The lead changed 14 times among 10 drivers

CGRFS Quote board:

Jamie McMurray – No. 1 McDonald’s All Day Breakfast Chevrolet SS: - “Our guys did a really good job making adjustments on the McDonald’s Chevy today. The car started out pretty loose early in the race, but the guys continued making good changes to the car and we were running lap-times competitive with the top-five cars. I didn’t know if we had a car capable of driving to the front like that after starting 30th today, but this team did a great job of preparing a good set-up. I’m proud of the effort from everyone on this team”

Strong Run for Larson Slowed by Pit Road Incident

For the second consecutive weekend, rain played a significant factor in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) race schedule, this time postponing the running of the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway until Sunday afternoon. Under ideal conditions on Sunday, started the race in 31st position, and looked strong early, quickly driving the No. 42 Target Chevy into the top-10. However, an incident on pit road on Lap 195 resulted in body damage that effectively slowed Larson’s excellent run and relegated the Target team to a 21st-place finish.

The Target Chevy initially looked very good off the truck, as the team began the first practice session running mock race laps. As the track changed early in practice though, the team fought handling issues as they worked to have the car ready for qualifying. Unfortunately, the balance issues persisted during qualifying, where Larson earned a 31st- place start for the race. During the final day of practice, as work continued on the car’s balance, the team ended the day feeling confident they had a competitive car for the race.

After waiting through the rain on Saturday, the 334-lap race began on Sunday under clear skies and warm temperatures. Approaching the competition caution on Lap 27, Larson had already gained six positions from his 31st- place start, and would jump to 17th-place on the ensuing restart. Larson remained in the mid-teens until a strong restart on Lap 80 earned him a spot in the top-10. Larson continued to make gains on the field and moved into the top-five just passed the 100-lap mark. A quick stop under yellow on Lap 169, and a solid restart, propelled Larson to second- place, which he would hold during two subsequent restarts. However, Larson's day took an unfortunate turn during the caution on Lap 195 when he made contact with the No. 18 coming onto pit road, which resulted in body damage to the left quarter panel. Although the crew worked quickly to repair the car, the damage significantly slowed the Target Chevy. For the remainder of the race, Larson ran around 20th-place and worked to stay on the lead lap before ultimately finishing one lap down in 21st-place.

With the finish, Larson remains 19th in the NSCS driver point standings.

NOTES OF INTEREST:

• The race was originally scheduled for Saturday night, but was moved to Sunday due to inclement weather • Larson ranked sixth for fastest laps run • With 108 green flag passes, Larson tied for fourth-most • Larson led once during the race for three laps • The lead changed 14 times among 10 drivers • The caution flag was shown nine times for a total of 44 laps

TCGRFS QUOTEBOARD

Kyle Larson, No. 42 Target Plaid Chevrolet SS – “I feel really terrible for getting into the No. 18 coming onto pit road, and hopefully it didn’t hurt their chances of transferring through this round of the Chase. We had a really good Target Chevy today. After starting towards the back, our car jumped up to the front early in the race and we were running really strong around the 100 lap mark. The balance was good on the car and I was able to run consistently on the top groove. We were holding on to second when some confusion coming onto pit lane led to contact with the No. 18, and the damage really hurt our speed. It was a tough thing to happen when our car was so good.”

NSCS teams will run the at on Sunday, Oct. 18. NBC, Sirius XM NASCAR Channel 90 and MRN Radio will have live coverage beginning at 2:15 p.m. EDT.
