Bishop’s Letter

At the start of this new month, the long wait for the end of Winter nears its end as the arrival of Spring edges ever closer. And though we know that the warmer weather and all that Spring promises is coming we know, too, that we must wait and be patient for a little longer. This month we celebrate the feast of Candlemas when we remember Simeon and Anna who waited patiently in the temple to see the Messiah. Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus into the temple as was the custom according to Jewish law and tradition, and Simeon and Anna were at last able to say they had seen for themselves the child who was the light of the world, and the salvation of the world. That was their calling and their task from God. In a culture and society where so often we are often under pressure to be ‘doing’, it can be hard to engage in seemingly passive things like watching and waiting, as Simeon and Anna did in the temple. And yet, their watching and waiting was anything but passive. Simeon and Anna were clear and focussed about their call and their task, and in their story there is a lesson for us all. Standing as we are near the beginning of a new year, we have a fresh opportunity to reflect on our own call from God and to think about the tasks he has given us. What is God calling you to do in this new year? How will you serve him in the months ahead?

Bishop Christopher

In January we have been able to buy a 'Shelterbox' with donations that have been given for the pledge appeal following the typhoon disaster. The gift of the Shelterbox, costing £590 will provide shelter, warmth and dignity to a family when they need it most. Each Shelterbox has a unique number so that we can track its destination. ' We know that the global funds raised by Shelterbox from caring donors towards the families on various Filipino islands are used in the most significant way that is providing shelter to those who have lost everything during the typhoon'. ERESBY HALL NEWS

At the time of writing Father Peter has taken one service for the residents but it was special as a booklet of favourite hymns was used for the first time. Twenty hymns were chosen, duplicated and made into a booklet and it now means that Eresby Hall has its own hymn book. The residents were very pleased to use it. Thanks go to Jane Howsam for producing it.

It was good to hear that some players from Lincoln City football club are coming back to do ball games with the residents. It was a very popular activity last time and for new residents this will be an interesting past time.

Another exciting development is the cinema room which is now ready for use. Films will be shown on a regular basis. Special chairs and fibre optic lights have been put in the room. Film posters are on the walls and it is hoped that the residents will enjoy using this extra facility.

After Andi Logue left Eresby as activities coordinator she joined a group of people led by Bob Green for a walk visiting various hostelries in the area. Twenty four people walked and £404 was raised .The Hundleby Inn and the Red Lion at Raithby opened early in order to welcome the walkers. Thank you very much to the local and everyone who supported this event in any way. Your support is appreciated.

Do you know anyone who is a resident at Eresby? Why not drop in and have a chat. You will be made very welcome.

10 Kindle

I wonder how many of you received a Kindle or Kindle Fire for Christmas. For the person who is not in the loop of this technology, one could well think, is it old fashioned thinking in that some-one may receive a pile of sticks for lighting a fire at Christmas? The dictionary describes kindling; to set a fire, or ignite, to light up, illuminate, or even make bright, (happiness kindled her eyes).

A kindle, given as a Christmas present allows the person to purchase and download books to read on a hand held screen. It also has the capacity of storing several books in a compact way. To enjoy a good book, the book needs to engage you. Allowing the story to come alive needs us not only to read it, but also for the mind to enter into the mystery of the read.

In January I had the chance to spend a week end on retreat at the College of the Resurrection. The theme, the feast of the Epiphany, the unique calling of the Wise Men from the Gospel of St.Matthew Chapter 2, was led by Br. Stephen. In the first session we reflected on just how long and dangerous that journey would have been for these Wise men of gentile birth. Not only would it have been costly in time, expense and very risky travelling just to follow a star which was not to hold any wealth for themselves in material benefits.

It is strange on how observant a person can be when they are away from their usual surroundings. As mentioned kindling is the dry wood used as material to start a fire. One of the young brothers’ used kindling to start the fire which burnt in the grate in the hall of the house. The wood used was the waste wood from the Christmas tree, (during the Christmas celebrations he had the responsibility of tending the tree), and this fire was only lit on special occasions.

In the room in, which we gathered for our reflective talks, burns an electric fire which was switched on only when the room was used by visitors. The light and patterns of the flames drew you into the fire’s presence but did not have the glow and warmth of a real fire. It of course required no kindling to start it, just the touch of a button to switch it on. It took an awful long time for the room to feel warm.

The theme led me into the idea of kindling, keeping God’s presence in us and all that we do, as part of our lives. Christmas is a time of celebration for the

11 birth of the infant Jesus and at Epiphany the wise men followed the star. At the start of the journey it was just a glow in the dark, dimming when they stopped in Jerusalem looking for the King. Once they were on the right road to Bethlehem, the star became brighter and took them to the Holy family. Is this not true of our own journeys in faith? The goings can get tough. Life is not always easy so we need to give our time to God in prayer, not only to listen to what is God is saying to us, in prayer and reading, but also to act upon the message which we receive from him.

In Graham Kendrick’s song, ‘Let the Flame Burn Brighter’, the lyrics include: Let the flame burn brighter in the heat of the darkness. Turning night into glorious day. Let the song grow louder as our love grows stronger. Let it shine, let it shine.

At this Epiphany season let the Flame Kindle in us, let the spark and glow of your life burn into us a glorious presence of your love for us. Today, let us be that light which shines out and shows of your presence and love in the world. Jean C

Thoughts about February

February is an interesting month even though the weather hasn't improved much. The 2nd is regarded as the mid point of winter and consequently there are expectations of lighter and warmer days to come. It is also seen as the final day of Christmas celebrations. In the days when candles were the only source of light, Christians were reminded that Jesus is "the light of the world". To emphasis this, large numbers of candles for use in the coming year were brought into church and blessed - the service being known as Candlemas. The 2nd is also remembered as the day Mary took her son Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem, giving thanks to God for his gift of a child. This was the usual custom forty days after the birth of a Jewish boy.

How many of us in our younger days have waited apprehensively for the postman on February 14th, St. Valentine's day? Not many cards are unsigned nowadays but years ago they were sent anonymously to a person who was secretly admired. Tradition is mixed up with the belief that the middle of February is the time when birds choose their mates. Young peoples' fancy turns to love and speculation is made as to future partners. St. Valentine was martyred in the fifth century for his work in helping Christians escape the brutal treatment in Roman prisons. Whilst imprisoned himself he reportedly fell in love with his jailer's daughter and sent her a note signed "from your valentine" - and so the tradition began.

Most intriguing about February is the question why it has 28 days and 29 in a leap year. Thoughts vary about this, mainly revolving around the lunar cycle with various leaders adjusting the number of days. Nobody is really sure of the origins and the explanations are confusing. What is interesting is that the calendar was first planned around agriculture and the need to know when to plant and when to sow.

Quite a few famous people were born in February; - Charles Dickens, Charles Darwin, Samuel Pepys, Thomas Edison and the composer Handel. Our current queen came to the throne in 1952 and Britain became decimal in 1971. February - candles and lovers ----- what a charming month! I.G.

Light a Light 2013

Once again we had a very successful “Christmas Tree Switch on” evening, lots of fun and laughter. The Light a Light wall is always deeply moving, the honesty and the emotion conveyed in so few words. Some of the messages are full of joy and hope, one of my favourites was after the “strictly come dancing” style with a Len Goodman “Seven!” The rest of this message read: “ten out of ten really, to all in the group” Others are heartbreaking, I am often very tearful whilst typing many of the messages, you are all held in my prayers.

22

The Light a Light wall attracts a lot of attention, I do not think we will ever tire of doing it. Some very interesting conversations between strangers have been sparked by the messages. Thank you to everyone who contributed in any way. Over £700 was raised from the messages for the group churches.

Christmas services 2013

Which service did you go to? We had a wonderful celebration of Christmas; from the village carol singing evenings to the Crib service. From the Harrington Carols, where we thanked David & Shervi for all they have done for the group, to the Carol Concert at Bag Enderby. From the traditional Nine Lessons and Carols at St. Leonard’s, to the Midnight Mass and the Christmas Morning, Family Communion at Tetford. Every service was so well attended and everyone, I am sure, pondered afresh the gift of Jesus Christ to us.

Love in a Box 2013

Ted & I met the “shoebox” man in the Bridge car park and safely handed over 48 filled shoeboxes. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. We have no idea the difference one of these shoeboxes makes to a child or even a family. Such a tiny thing for us to do, but so important to those receiving a box filled with love. The Rotary Club extend their heartfelt thanks to you. I did ask if they had a nationwide total, I will let you know.

The New Winter Service Rota

We really must try to think of another idea similar to this. The very fact that we have put in place a hopeful solution to travelling to church services in winter seems to have kept the bad weather at bay. I know, do not speak too soon, it is not too late yet and all those other sentences. Please let me know how you think the idea has worked and how it can be improved.

2014! As Victor Meldrew would say;” I do not believe it.” O.K I know, that has got many young ones saying “Who?”

How many new year resolutions have you already broken? I have still kept to the advice, not really a resolution, which I gave myself, well more or less.

Why do we set ourselves such unattainable targets? What is it that makes people think they must always do better, buy bigger, earn more?

I am generalising, many of you teach me so much about being satisfied with what you have and sharing with those around you.

We are at the start of 2014, A.G.M. and P.C.C. meetings written in the diary. The diary becomes vital to the smooth-ish running of our group, I could not manage without it and this year I have had to resort to bigger pages, not something I wanted to do, I have always thought the big ‘page a day’ diary unnecessary. Not so any more I do not know how I managed without the bigger pages. Yes I admit it, I am getting to “that age”, new stronger glasses have also had to be sought.

I was chatting to one of you after a Sunday Service and saying how I miss our little Sue, K.B.I. is never far from my lips, I said to the parishioner that Sue was irreplaceable in so many ways, but finding someone who could give me some “remedial help” was a problem. Not what I meant to say, admin. help I meant. But upon reflection I was probably right the first time. The definition of remedial in the dictionary states; affording a remedy, intended to remedy disease, deficiency etc.

Well the deficiency is the lack of administrative help at this time. One or two of you have offered help where you can and so the ball is in my court to sort things sufficiently to enable you to do so. Help is always at hand if we but seek it. Sometimes it means swallowing our pride and asking to be helped, that is always hard. We do not like to bother people or appear weak or acknowledge that we do need help. When was the last time you sought help from someone? Were you surprised by the willingness of that person to truly help you?

Jesus gives sound advice about asking for help, but we do have to have the courage to ask; Matthew 7:7..

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Faith is at the heart of our lives, we have just celebrated the birth of a baby with a ransom upon his head. That same baby gives to us the message of eternity. But we are told we have to ask God for the help and strength needed if we are to build upon our faith and to help each other. May 2014 find each and every one of us able to ask God and each other for help.
