GALMINGTON & COMEYTROWE NEWS ISSUE NUMBER 629 / JULY 2021 Established in 1968

First of all thank you to those people who responded to my request for delivery volunteers. Thank you for your kind and much appreciated offers of help.

This month I am appealing for volunteers to be distributors of the Galmington and Comeytrowe News. This could be a couple who volunteer, or an individual, or two friends. So, please think about helping.

Let me tell you what the distributor job involves.

1. Zeralynx, our printers, deliver the magazines to the distributors. 2. The distributors then sort the magazines into piles for each of the people who carry out the house to house street deliveries. 3. The magazine bundles are then delivered to the homes of the delivery team. 4. Job done!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the present distributors Simon and Jane Rudd who have done this job for a number of years, and who now need to retire as they have an increase in family responsibilities. They will of course provide help during a transitional period.

Volunteers will be helped to get into the swing of things. If you need more information then please get in touch with me Priscilla Ryan or with Simon Rudd. Contact details can be found on the back page. Thank you!

It seemed surreal to be reading a story that involved a historical epidemic and one set in the future while experiencing the restrictions and effects of Covid 19. 26Having said that it is an easy story to read, the characters are three dimensional7 and likeable. There is humour and humanity. The themes of living through adversity, coping with death and illness, kindness to strangers, the importance of faith all resonate for the 21st century reader. After reading Doomsday I then went on to read Blackout and ALL Clear, set during the second world war and involving the Oxford time travel team. The time travellers are marooned in the London of 19 44. Again, immensely involving. All three books provide an immersive reading experience where we identify with and care about the characters. They experience historical events and we can share in that experience.

So what would it be like to go back in time and not only observe but to experience in all its detail that particular period? Where would you choose to go?

Lynne Nash on behalf of Trull, Angersleigh and Staplehay Local History Society

Whilst physical meetings have not yet re-commenced, we have kept in contact with as many members as we can with email and facebook. Our facebook page includes most of the articles we have been able to provide during the last 15-months and is certainly well worth a look.

During May, various of our members provided the following articles:-

The Story of Trull Don Archer referred to the First Edition of The Story of Trull, produced nearly 70 years ago now by Trull and Staplehay Women’s Institute as their entry to a competition run by Federation of Women’s Institutes during the Coronation Year. The Trull Parish Archive Group, with the encouragement of today’s WI members, are working hard on a Second Edition. The WI’s account started in the Anglo-Saxon period.

There is also evidence of Roman settlement locally.

‘Cool Water’ and ‘The Wellington Boot’

These were further chapters provided by Anne Leamon relating to recollections of a childhood spent on a Somerset farm.

From Rags to Riches - Sir Frederick Rowland

Anne Leamon provided this article relating to her relative, Sir Frederick Rowland,. Sir Frederick was born in 1874, educated at the old Temple Day School, Taunton, commencing work at 12 years old as an errand boy for an estate agents and accountants in Paul Street, Taunton. He rose through his own efforts to one of the highest civil positions in the land.

5 BOOKS THAT UNWRAP A CHILD’S IMAGINATION

The children’s book subscription to inspire a lifelong love of reading

Two quality books delivered to a child’s front door including two 16 page engaging activity books, which are full of fun, IDEAL educational and creative content PRESENT WWW.LETSGOREAD.CO.UK/GCN FROM £16.99 PER BOX 6 Reasons why it’s important to read with your child With Mark Gladstone-Smith

When you read with your child, you get to spend uninterrupted time with your little ones - away from screens and the all-encompassing ‘go go go’ that life often throws at us. Reading together is an opportunity to learn, bond, and begin to understand new concepts.

1. Stimulates imagination Books offer us endless worlds, activities, characters and scenarios that we can experience from the comfort of our own homes. Although your child may not have been to Mars, they’ll be able to learn all about it in storybooks.

When we read to our children, we introduce them to new concepts that broaden their imagination. And a wonderful imagination promotes social, lingual, emotional, creative, and physical development!

2. Expands understanding For children, it’s often easier to understand emotions, ideas, and activities when they can get to know them through storybooks. Whilst your child might not understand certain things about the world, books can illustrate scenarios in which these more complicated things become easier to understand.

Whether you would like your child to understand more about the natural world, their big feelings, or the science behind our survival, we guarantee that there’s a book to help you teach it!

3.Develops language Reading to our children helps them to develop a broad range of vocabulary. You can even teach your child a second language by reading books that are written in something other than their mother tongue!

Books will introduce vocabulary to your children that you might not use on a day-to-day basis in the home.

4. Encourages bonding Snuggling up to read with your child is a great way to promote bonding. Not only do you get to share stories, but you also get to share cuddles, smiles, and laughter. It’s important to read to your children because this time spent with you will become one of the most treasured parts of their day - and yours too!

In a world that tends to be fast-paced, slowing down to read will give you the time and space to connect with your child.

5. Improves concentration If children want to know what happens at the end of the story, they’ll need to concentrate! A good storybook will improve your child’s concentration by introducing them to interesting plots, funny scenes, and relatable characters. All of which will improve their concentration.

6. Leads to a lifelong love of reading By nurturing a habit of reading, we can help our children to develop a lifelong love of learning. Reading is a great way to improve wellbeing, destress, and educate ourselves - something that we all want for our children.

8 PAULINE’S PANTRY Carrot Cake - but not as you know it!

Why not try something a little different? Although this recipe may appear complicated the end result is delicious and the sliced carrot topping looks impressive. It keeps well in the fridge for 3 days.

• 525g peeled carrots • 3 teaspoons of yeast extract (such as Marmite) • 1 medium red onion finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 200g unsalted cashews • 2 tablespoons tahini • 80g fresh breadcrumbs • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley • 1 tablespoon of caraway seeds or cumin (these are optional flavourings, try with and without to see which you prefer) • 1 unwaxed lemon, zested and juiced

Method

1. Grease and line a 900g loaf tin or cake tin with baking paper or non-stick foil. 2. Cut 450g of the carrots into large chunks and boil for 20 minutes or until very tender. 3. Measure out 50ml of the cooking liquid, stir in the yeast extract and set aside. 4. Drain the carrots and leave to cool. 5. Meanwhile, fry the onion and garlic in the oil over a medium heat until soft but not coloured. 6. Preheat the oven to 180⁰ C, Fan 160⁰, Gas Mark 4. 7. Pulse the cooked carrots and the cashews in a food processor until finely chopped. 8. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the tahini, breadcrumbs, parsley, lemon zest and juice plus the yeast extract ’stock’. Add the caraway seeds or cumin at this point if you decide to use them. 9. Slice the reserved carrot into thin discs and arrange in the base of your baking tin. 10. Spoon the carrot mixture on top and press down firmly. 11. Cover the tin with foil and bake for 45 minutes then uncover and bake for 30 minutes more. 12. Allow to cool in the tin before turning out and chill until needed. 13. Slice and serve cold or reheat gently in the oven or microwave. Enjoy! 9 Chris Francis Electrical Services

12 21 12 GARDENING With Lily Summerlease

This month I thought I would write about the benefits of deadheading roses.

Deadheading roses involves removing faded flowers to divert the plant’s energy from producing rose hips, to making more flowers. Deadheading roses bushes will keep them looking their best throughout the season. Faded flowers that are left on the plant can make it look untidy and, after rain, the faded flowers can turn into a soggy, slimy mess. This can encourage fungal infections that may lead to stem die-back.

You will need gloves and secateurs. With multi headed roses as each flower dies snip it off, and once each bud in the cluster has bloomed and faded then remove the whole stem. When deadheading roses with single-flowers, snip off the flowerhead and around 15cm of stem, cutting just above a strong, healthy leaf. Your next flower shoot will grow from that leaf joint.

The quicker you are at removing faded blooms the quicker the rose bush will put its energies into producing new buds. Don’t forget to feed your rose bush since it is doing all that hard work producing flowers. Two multi headed roses: Left: Eye of the Tiger Right: Blue for you

Spend time in the garden Even if you don’t have a very big garden, spending time outdoors can be beneficial. Now that the pandemic-related restrictions are being eased, seeing people outside can be a great way to elevate your mood.

Gardening can also promote positive feelings as you nurture new life through whatever you plant. It’s a great way to grow a bit of extra food too, such as potatoes and strawberries. These do well in containers, so you don’t even need much space – which is great news if you live in an apartment and only have a balcony or window ledge.

For ideas of some of the best vegetables to grow in pots see balconygardenweb.com. Check out growlikegrandad.co.uk, a blog written by an anxiety sufferer who has experienced the great benefits of gardening. He posts some great tips for gardening on a budget too!

Get the kids involved too You’ll find lots of resources online to encourage the kids to get outdoors, gain a sense of achievement and boost their mental wellbeing. Check out childrensgardeningweek.co.uk and make the most of National Children’s Gardening Week at the end of May.

There are lots of free debt counselling charities that can help. Just taking this first step can feel like a weight has been lifted. Seek help with your mental health If you’re struggling with your mental health, don’t suffer in silence. Get help through Mind (mind.org.uk) or your local GP.

14 23 19 Comeytrowe Park News

The last year has been a particularly trying time but with Spring on its way things are hopefully looking up now. Throughout the lockdowns the park has been a haven of peace, tranquillity and activity for many local residents and families. We have been delighted to see many new families making use of the playground, the hard court area and of course the copses and open spaces. Dens have been built, trees have been climbed and over the seasons there have been cherries to pick and flowers to admire. We have all enjoyed watching and listening to the birds as they have built nests in the nesting boxes and raised their young. All in all Comeytrowe Park has been at its best over the last 12 months, thanks to the work of the team at Somerset West and Taunton and our ever vigilant dog walkers and volunteers keeping an eye on things!

We were of course delighted that this work was recognised in the award of a Community Green Flag for the second year and our application for next year has been accepted. The park is also a beneficiary of a grant from as part of a bid with the Green Forum looking at ways to combat climate change. Our bid Hedges and Edges – looks at ways to improve carbon capture and increase the biodiversity of our open spaces through planting and improving the hedgerows in our area. With the help of Somerset West and Taunton Council we will be replenishing the ancient hedgerows around the park and replanting where they have been removed. The other partners in the bid are Longrun Meadow, Netherclay Community Woodland and Victoria Park. We will be bringing you more news on this as the project gets under way. Finally we would like to announce that we have a Facebook page! If you would like to join our group of friends and supporters and add your photos or news to the site just look for Friends of Comeytrowe Park and request permission to join. We very much look forward to welcoming you, both to the Facebook page and of course to the park if you have yet to visit.

The Local History Society has worked hard to continue to stay in touch with its members and other interested people during the last 12 months when we have not been able to meet up physically. Just to give you a flavour of our recent endeavours:

An article on 14 February raised the issue of what Major General Charles George Gordon (1833 1885) and Margorie Cecil Winterton (1903 1953 who had resided on the Quantocks) had in common. The following article of 22 February answered this question in some depth they both died in Khartoum . Charles Gordon also had a strong local connection with Taunton in that he went to school at Fullands.

The next article written by David Hawkings, a Society member and local author, provided some further notes on some mid 19th Century Wills of people who had resided in the Trull area.

On 7 March we challenged our members to a cryptic West Country place name quiz. to give an example one clue is 'Time to renew mousetraps by the sea' 6.5.4 letters Somerset . I'll leave readers to fathom out the answer!

From timetotime, members also raise a few history based queries of their own one such recently was a question around the background history of Cherry Orchard House in Trull, to whom the enquirers had a family link, which provoked a couple of interesting responses from the archivists amongst our membership.

We are looking forward to being able to resume our regular meetings at Trull Church Community Centre once the Covid19 situation permits. Copies of articles can also be found on our facebook page.

From advice, through to measuring, supplying, and expert fitting, our aim Anyway, enough of my rambling. Over the last few months I decided I wanted to branch out and find a new genre to read (away from grumpy London detectives and is to provide you with the best service. government conspiracy plots). I’ve always loved history, so after some digging Visit our showroom to view our extensive range of options. Samples about, I came across this series of six books around the central character of th available to take away. Giordano Bruno – who was a real person in the 15 century – although these books are entirely works of fiction (or are they…?). Bruno is an Italian monk (and philosopher, poet and scientist) on the run from the Cook Way, Bindon Road, Taunton, TA2 6BJ Roman inquisition, and finds himself in England, at the height of the rein of Queen Open Monday Friday 9am 5pm, Saturday 9am 2pm Elizabeth (the first one). He finds himself in the employ of Sir Francis Walsingham, 01823 335952 or email [email protected] the Tudor Queen’s chief spymaster. Over the series of books he is tasked with investigating murders, plots of treason and infiltrating groups of rebellious traitors. We see him meet several of history’s main players, and the books are written in such a captivating and mesmerising way, that you can feel them come to life out of the pages of the history books we studied as children, to become living, breathing people. Plus there’s some murderous goings on that need solving, which is always a plus for me. I don’t have the word count here to be able to go into great detail about the entire series, but I must say that these books made a real impact with me; they are so cleverly crafted that you get easily immersed into the story and the words, thoughts and feelings of the characters just flow. The first book is Heresy, and I would give this 5 stars (in fact, I’d give all of the six books 5 stars. Even the miserable soand sos on Goodreads give it just under 4 stars, and they’re normally a fierce bunch of critics), and the series is definitely in my top 10 of all time. So if you’re after something new (especially if you like history, crime or stories based on real people) then I’d strongly recommend this (or if you’re a fan of Joanne Harris or Philippa Gregory books you should enjoy this as well).

I must finish up by mentioning an excellent children’s book subscription website that I was introduced to. For a small monthly fee, they send your child/grandchild two age suitable reading books and an activity pack: www.letsgoread.co.uk so why not take a look yourself if you’re after a book based present for a child.
