Dr Irina Anderson

1990, 1996 BA, PhD Psychology

Irina graduated from the University of Sheffield with a degree in Psychology in 1990 and a PhD in social psychology in 1995. She joined the School of Psychology at the University of Birmingham as a lecturer before moving to the School of Psychology at the University of East London as Senior lecturer and then Principal Lecturer. Irina is a member of the British Psychological Society, and, within that, the Social Psychology Section and the Psychology of Women Section. Her main research interests are in violence and aggression, child abuse, attributions and blame, attitudes, and language and discourse.

Mr Joe Burns

1981 BEng Civil & Structural Engineering

Joe is a Chartered Engineer and Managing Director with 35 years’ international experience across government, transport, power, water and commercial sectors. He has worked in client, consultant and contractor roles across Africa, Americas, Australasia, Caribbean, Europe, Middle East and in all parts of the UK. He has first-hand experience of the value of civil engineering as a force for social, economic and environmental good in developing, transitional and developed countries; this has included disaster recovery, health, safety and education improvements as well as the principal engineering structures and systems.

Mr Chris Earnshaw

1976 BSc Physics

Chris Earnshaw OBE FREng CEng FIET FRSA graduated with a degree in Special Physics in 1976 and joined Post Office Telecommunications (later to become British Telecommunications plc (BT)) who had sponsored his studies at Sheffield. His early career was concerned with the design and development of digital telephone exchanges and a number of other network technology and engineering programmes. In 1989 he was appointed to the board of BT UK with responsibility for the modernisation of the UK telecoms network, a multi £bn programme he successfully delivered over the next decade. In 1991 he joined the BT Group Executive board as Managing Director Worldwide Networks. After a short period establishing a subsidiary company in the US, he returned to the UK as Managing Director Networks and Systems with additional responsibility for the company’s R&D and information systems programmes. From 1999 - 2002 he served as BT Group Engineering Director.

Since 2002 he has worked with a range of technology companies as adviser and non-executive director. He has also advised the UK government on matters related to the digital economy. He is currently non-executive chairman of the BRE Group and Cranfield Aerospace Solutions Ltd.

Throughout his career Chris has actively promoted excellence in engineering and collaboration between industry and universities and has served on various national boards and committees. He was a Trustee of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) formerly the IEE, Europe’s largest professional body in the engineering sector, from 2001 - 2009 and served as President in 2008 - 2009.

Chris was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1999. He has served on the Engineering Policy Committee and is a member of the Enterprise Hub supporting young technology based businesses. He chairs the Sainsbury Management Fellowship Steering Group.

Chris was awarded the OBE for ‘Services to Engineering and Technology’ in the 2015 New Year’s Honours.

Mrs Moira Earnshaw

1977 BA French and Spanish

Moira Earnshaw (Turner whilst at Sheffield 1973-77) studied French and Spanish (BA Joint Hons). Following graduation and marriage to fellow Sheffield graduate Chris, she moved to the Northern Home Counties and taught French to children in various schools. After a break to bring up a family of 3 children she returned to teaching, specialising in teaching English as a second language to ethnic minorities and also to overseas students at the University of Hertfordshire. In more recent times she has built a small business teaching French and Spanish to adults under the brand Language for Fun.

Dr Paul Firth

1981, 2014 BA Law, Honorary LittD

Paul is a Property lawyer and the National Head of Real Estate at Irwin Mitchell; one of the top twenty legal practices in the country. He has extensive development and commercial experience and has advised many major property companies on a wide range of commercial issues. Paul is Chairman of Creative Sheffield the Economic Development Agency for the City of Sheffield and he is also the Chairman of the Children’s Hospital Charity. Paul has received a number of awards including the inaugural Insider South Yorkshire Dealmakers Lifetime Achievement Awards; the Institute of Directors (Yorkshire & Humber) Business Advisor of the Year in 2008 and has won the International IVCA Clarion Awards for a conference he conceived and organised with Vice President Al Gore to raise business leaders awareness of the risks and opportunities presented by climate change. He has recently been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Sheffield to acknowledge services to the University, the City of Sheffield and to the legal profession.

Professor Anthony Fretwell-Downing

1962, 1966 BSc, PhD Chemistry

Anthony Fretwell-Downing was educated at St. Edward’s School, Oxford and then at the University of Sheffield, where he took a BSc in Chemistry and Physics graduating with first class honours in 1962. In 1966 he was awarded his PhD. After a short time teaching Chemistry at Oundle School, Anthony joined his family’s event catering business. The company provided integrated catering services for local and national companies which included the royal opening of several industrial complexes.

After a decline in this luxury market, he was prompted to diversify his business interests and to form various IT companies in the early 1980s on the back of his design of an application generator, the MicroManager. Fretwell-Downing Group Ltd was formed in 1991. By 2001 it was recognised as a major UK and international supplier of information management systems and associated services, with special interest in library automation systems, education management and catering control.

The company, comprising of multi-disciplinary graduates, became a collaborative partner with the University of Sheffield and Hallam University for several multi-million pound European Union and Department of Trade and Industry funded telematics projects. The company received the 1999 Made in Sheffield Award for their genealogical website design, familysearch.org. The education and library Management Information Systems (MIS) companies were sold. The remaining company, Fretwell-Downing Hospitality Ltd, holds the Royal Warrant for its catering MIS, Saffron. The Maynard Hotel enables F. Fretwell-Downing (Group) Ltd to continue its event catering tradition.

Anthony took the chair of the University of Sheffield’s Management School Advisory Board in 1998, before becoming Chairman from 1991 to 1997. Previous roles at the University included membership of the Political Economy Research Centre and the Advisory Committee of the ESRC Centre for Organisation and Innovation. He was also chairman of the Computer Science Industrial Liaison Board and a member of the Career’s Advisory Board. He was a member of the CBI SME Council from 2005 to 2011. Anthony re-joined the Management School Advisory Board in 2005 and took the Chair again in 2009. In 2013 he was appointed chairman of Dataline Software Ltd. He is a member of The Athenaeum.

Mr Tony Henshaw

1975 BSc Physics & Geology

An earth scientist by background with BSc Physics/Geology from Sheffield University, MSc Geophysics Newcastle University and MBA London Business School. Currently studying part-time for an earth science PhD at Imperial College. Over 35 years of experience in major oil companies and FTSE utility companies, the last sixteen at Board Director level with P&L responsibility. Experience encompasses technical, commercial and project leadership, M&A, corporate finance, Gas and Power and LNG, with significant international exposure.

Mr David Hughes

1976, 1979 BA, Dip Arch Architecture

David is currently Deputy Chairman of Aukett Swanke PLC, a large firm of architects and interior designers with offices throughout Europe and the Middle East. He was CEO of Swanke Hayden Connell Architects, headquartered in New York, from 2004 until 2013 when he merged the European side of that firm with Aukett Fitzroy Robinson to establish the current practice. In his career he has worked in local government and private practice and has worked in the commercial, residential, healthcare and leisure sectors. He regularly advises clients in the capacity of an expert witness.

Mr Paul Infield

1979 LLB Law

Paul was educated at Haberdashers’ Aske’s School, Elstree, and The Peddie School, Hightstown, New Jersey, USA (English Speaking Union Schoolboy Scholar) before reading Law at Sheffield University. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales by the Inner Temple in July 1980 and has been in independent practice as a barrister (trial lawyer) since then. He now specialises in family finance law from chambers at 36 Bedford Row, London. He has conducted cases at every level of court including the House of Lords and the Privy Council. His practice has taken him all over the world. He is also a mediator and arbitrator.

Air Vice Marshall Alan Johnson

Commissioned 1957 Retired 1991 in rank of Air Vice Marshal having served in UK, Germany, Borneo, Cyprus, Singapore and USA.

Career Highlights:  Represented Yorkshire County Athletics 1949 120yds Hurdles. Yorkshire High Jump Champion 1949.  Represented Universities Athletic Union in Boxing v Welsh Universities 1951  Represented University Athletics Union in Athletics (120yds Hurdles) v Welsh and Scottish Universities 1952-54.  Founded Sheffield University Basketball Club 1951.  Awarded Sir Arthur Hall Trophy 1956.

 Qualified as parachutist in 1958 and served on Parachute Rescue Teams in Cyprus and Singapore.  Qualified in Free Fall parachuting in 1961. Member of Joint Services High Altitude Trials Team 1968-70. Member of RAF Display Team performing displays all over Far East 1965-67.  Founder member of RAF Sport Parachuting Association 1961. Chairman of British Parachute Association Safety and Training Committee 1967 – 1970.  Head of British Delegation at three World Parachuting Championships in Yugoslavia 1970, United States 1972 and Hungary 1974.  Basic Flying Training on Jet Provost Mk5 at RAF College Cranwell 1975.  Medical Officer responsible for HRH Prince Charles and HRH Prince Andrew during parachute training, 1977.  Appointed Officer of Order of St John 1977  Chief of Aerospace Medicine Headquarters United States Air Force 1978-1981.  Awarded Richard Fox-Linton Memorial Prize for Flight Safety 1983  Officer Commanding Princess Alexandra Hospital RAF Wroughton 1984 -1986  Principal Medical Officer RAF Germany 1986 – 1988. Interests:  Piano – member of Apex Jazz Band 1951-57. Formed by and of Sheffield students.  Cricket. Ex-Chairman of Adastrian Cricket Club and Royal Air Force Cricket Association and now Honorary Life President of both.  Sport Parachuting. Completed over 1000 descents during RAF service but now a bit too old!  Patron of South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum (Doncaster).

Mr Ernest Kochmann

1969 BSc Chemical Engineering & Fuel Technology

On finishing my degree I worked for 2 years in production on a chemical plant and then under took a one year Diploma in Business Administration at Manchester Business School. Then joined the family firm in the packaging and paper converting industry related to adhesives. In 1988 I started my own business in Process Safety. I am now semi-retired but maintain an interest in other commercial enterprises as well as charity work in supporting postgraduate education.

Dr Vanessa Lawrence

1984, 2001 BA Geography, Honorary DSc

Dr Vanessa Lawrence CB is currently working internationally as a senior advisor to governments, inter- governmental organisations and large private sector organisations. In addition, she is a Non-Executive Director of the Satellite Applications Catapult whose focus is fostering innovation in the use of satellite data.

She is the Honorary Colonel of 135 Geographic Squadron Royal Engineers, on the Advisory Group of the Urban Big Data Centre and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Southampton and Visiting Professor at Kingston University.

From 2000-2014, she held the post of Director General and CEO of Ordnance Survey, Britain’s National Mapping Authority and she was the advisor to the British Government for issues involving mapping, surveying and geographic information. She is the longest serving Director General and CEO of Ordnance Survey since 1875.

From 2011-2015, she was the founding co-chair of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM). During her tenure UN-GGIM grew to having over 140 nations at Ministerial and Senior Official level involved. Prior to joining the British Civil Service, she held senior commercial roles with the billion-dollar American software company, Autodesk and also the global media and publishing company, Pearson plc.

Mr Christian Marroni

1998, 1999 BA, MA Politics

Christian is Group Communications Director supporting Grosvenor Group and Wheatsheaf Group, the two corporate operating businesses of the Grosvenor Estate. Christian joined Grosvenor in June 2016 from international law firm Linklaters, where he was Global‎ Head of Corporate Communications.

Experienced in the planning and implementation of national and global communications campaigns for both partnerships and PLCs, Christian previously worked for international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, accountant and business adviser Grant Thornton, and international PR consultancy Ketchum. He holds an MA in Politics from the University of Sheffield.

Ms Anne Minors

1976 BA Architecture

Anne Minors BA(Hons), Dip Arch, MA Theatre Consultancy, RIBA, FRSA, IoTC is a musically-trained architect and theatre consultant who enjoys collaborating with architects and engineers to create performing arts buildings of beauty and functionality in equal measure. She has collaborated with many internationally leading architects and successfully delivered projects in four continents. She was Head of Design at Theatre Projects Consultants for 10 years, working simultaneously in the Far East and North America. She founded Anne Minors Performance Consultants in 1996 to offer the theatre industry and arts world a holistic and consistent quality approach to the multi-disciplinary aspects of theatre consulting. Anne is interested in how space is perceived by different senses and how performers and audience respond. She took this further with an MA in Theatre Consulting at Warwick University in 2012. She lectures regularly to architecture schools, acoustics, theatre and scenography conferences. As well as singing regularly, Anne has a long term involvement in extending the accessibility of the arts to local children in her community, and the role of the arts in health and wellbeing.

Mr Andrew Morrison

Mr David Neale

40 years in all sectors of UK Farming advice. Specialising in seed, plant breeding, genetics and food functionality. Organiser of UK wide farm demonstration units and regularly speak to meetings in all areas of UK to approx. 6k farmers. Experience in Poland but also in UK Policy, legislation and future farming plans. Strategy Board Member of Grantham Centre at Sheffield university and advisor to Bishop Burton and Riseholme Colleges. LEAF Ambassador and consultant to BBC Countryfile (Adam Henson).

Dr Brendan Neiland

Posts in better regulation and radioactive substances. Department of Health 2009-2014 .Posts in professional regulation and payment.

Dr Kenneth Pickersgill

1958, 1962 BSc Chemistry, PhD Engineering

Worked for Unilever in UK. Then in Switzerland for Nestle. Also Germany for Danone. Build an R&D laboratory in Spain, after Franco, for Nestle. Worked for KAS as R&D Director in Northern Spain. Fluent in French, Spanish, German.

Ms Alyson Sterland

1979, 1981 BSc, MSc Geology

Worked as a palynologist for five years in North Wales and Aberdeen, having graduated from Sheffield University in 1980 with a BSc in Geology and an MSc in Palynology. Moved to London in 1985, working as an exploration geologist for a number of oil companies, including a four year posting to Oslo, Norway. Areas of interest were mainly oil & gas exploration of the North Sea, but also carried out studies on Russia, the Far East and other petroleum provinces. Spent last 12 years as Exploration Manager for Atlantic Petroleum, a company with exploration, development and production assets in NW Europe, but the oil price crash led to the company making all UK staff redundant. Currently working as consultant geologist.

Mr Mike Steuart

1981 BA English Literature

After 3 years spent in the Nottingham House and Goodwin, Mike somehow left Sheffield with a degree, which opened doors to the City of London. After an undistinguished 20 years in Investment Banking & having become a Chartered Accountant along the way, Mike left the City to pursue a portfolio career. Now as a freelance FD he spends time on corporate projects in the fine wine, sport and digital media worlds, while finding time to cycle over the Alps and play football for the LSE Vets (sorry Sheffield, the commute is too much).

Mr Stuart Vaughan

Since graduating have worked for Delta Metals, The Stock Exchange, Deloittes, Shell International and pagoda. Currently managing director of Pagoda Mason and Thames Utilities & Infrastructure Ltd.

Mr Paul Wood

1970 BEng Civil Engineering

Paul worked for various consulting engineers and contractors before setting up Elliott Wood Partnership with Gary Elliott in 1994. Elliott Wood now employ 130 people in three different offices. Our projects are primarily buildings but also include other structures such as sculptures and bridges.

Mr Joseph Zito
