Gateway to the Hill Country A Guide for Visitors & Newcomers

Fall/Winter 2018 • Compliments of The Boerne Star Birding - not just for birdbrains It’s not just retiree snowbirds who flock to the Hill Coun- try. According to the Texas Heritage Trails Program, birdwatching is considered one of the state’s highest- ranking outdoor pastime, far above consumptive sports like hunting. “The dollars spent in communities across a very bird-rich Texas prove the point,” the site goes on to say. Hundreds of bird varieties may be seen in the area – whether along streets of the county’s towns and hamlets, or deep in cedar thickets. Almost a dozen types of accipi- tridae (hawks, eagles and kites) may float at altitudes so high that they’re rendered almost invisible to the human eye...or they might swoop into a treetop at the side of any country road. On a more modest scale, ruby-throated hummingbirds, black-chinned hummingbirds, and Rufous hummingbirds – having enjoyed the summer’s largesse, may even opt to winter over. Falcons and kestrels, sapsuckers and woodpeckers, owls 342 North Main Street and jays and shrikes and flycatchers and vireos and 342 North Main Street warblers and kinglets and pipits...and even the occasional 830-249342-8063 North Main yellow-billedStreet cuckoo comprise some of the region’s bird- www.kleinsmokehaus.com830-249-8063 ing bounty. 342 Northwww.kleinsmokehaus.com Main Street830 -249 -8063One of the best things about birding?
