No easy feat when your home is lit up like Christmas. But it is all for a worthy cause . the children of Gisborne. The Loftus family of Elsdon Best Street are one of many who have added a bit of magic to streets around town by dressing their homes for Christmas on the outside, as well as the inside. “We love seeing the house all lit up. I probably like it more than our kids now,” said Tony, the driving force behind their light displays for the past seven years. It takes five hours to light up the roof, MANGAPAPA MAGIC: This home has lit up Oswald Street with its decorations and then at least another seven hours for several blow-up Santas in different scenarios. Pictures by Sophie Rishworth their front yard and playhouse. The spectacular end result brings hundreds of admiring families to their doorstep. Tony said the power bill wasn’t “too bad” because the lights were all LED, and they have solar panels on their roof. He starts on the Christmas display about mid-November. Everything comes from Bunnings, where Kara works. The lights are on for around four hours a night from 8pm, while three projectors play Christmas movies. Last year their house hit its peak popularity, said Tony. “I still remember being quite amazed and looking down the street at people parking their cars and walking down. We had traffic jams.” To compensate for the increased traffic at the end of their cul-de-sac street, Tony, Kara and their neighbours park on an empty reserve close by so drivers can turn around easier. Tony is an IT consultant at Blue House Computing so has the technical knowledge to solder wires and fix any “technical issues”. He has plans to make their display even bigger next year. Other homes worth a drive-by are on Maki Street, Oswald Street, Ormond Road, Aberdeen Road and Sunvale Crescent. • Review of 2010/11 – Part 2 – Losing Their Way
Review of 2010/11 – Part 2 – Losing their way Leeds United’s return to the Championship had seen them exceed expectations, despite heavy defeats at home to Preston and Cardiff and an embarrassing 5-2 reverse at Barnsley. The sheen of beating table-topping QPR on 18 December had been dulled by losing two-goal leads against Leicester and Portsmouth, but as 2011 opened, Leeds were fourth in the table, level on 40 points with Cardiff and Swansea, with Rangers seven points clear of that pack. It was heady stuff after three years in the League One wilderness and supporters were hopeful of a real promotion push in the New Year. Andy O'Brien, pictured celebrating his goal against Hull City on 9 November, made his move to Elland Road permanent on New The positive mood was enhanced by the Year's Day announcement that Irish international centre-back Andy O’Brien, on loan from Bolton since 29 October, would make the move permanent. O’Brien, who represented himself in contract talks, commented: “The meeting with the chairman was something I will remember all my life. It was a bit like when I signed my first contract at Bradford with Geoffrey Richmond – that was entertaining as well. My Dad came in with me initially and he is a big bloke of around 20 stone. The chairman’s first words were, ‘We’ll sign the fat one instead.’ My Dad replied he had been on a diet for six weeks, to which the chairman said, ‘Well that isn't effing working, is it?’ Dad is quite quick-witted and said back, ‘Well I don’t know what your excuse is’.

Gordon District Cricket Club Inc. 115TH ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2019-2020 SEASON FOUNDED 1905 2 GORDON DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB INC. ANNUAL REPORT & FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2019-2020 GORDON DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB INC. 3 Message from the President If one measures overall club performance purely by playing performances, Gordon had a relatively poor season. We slid to 12th on the club championship (from 8th the season before) and for the first time in several years we did not qualify for any grade or Metro Cup finals. In the end it was probably fortunate, given the season was cruelly cut short with the emerging impact of COVID-19. Our stand-out performance was our Poidevin-Gray side that played excellent cricket all season only to put in their only poor performance, being well beaten by UTS North Sydney, in the preliminary final of the competition. There is no doubt we are in a re-building phase within the club, with four of our top six bats in 1st grade retiring in the Geoff Hickman past two seasons. The positive is we have some excellent young players coming through and this has been shown by the performance of our Poidevin- Gray and Green Shield teams over the past few years. We need to nurture these players and if so, I have confidence they will become strong 1st grade players over the coming seasons. One performance I am very proud of, is the winning of the Spirit of Cricket award for the third time. Club culture was an important focal point for the club last season and this message was embraced by our playing group.
