June is upon us and we still have a few really good unsold items available from the banquet. You should give them serious consideration. This is your last chance until next year’s banquet. From the special order inventory, you still have a chance to buy the following items at great prices: Outcast boat, RL Winston rod, Tibor reel, Galvan reel, Scott rod, and Sage rod, reel, and line combo. You get to choose among items from the manufacturer’s inventory and pay a discounted price plus the cost of shipping and handling. Call Bob Bayer at 805-434-7905 for the details. These are great prices on premium quality products. We have one guide trip available. If you have never fished Pyramid Lake for really big cutthroat trout, this is a fantastic opportunity to really understand how it is done. Chris Wharton is the guide and you can have a full day for 2 on Pyramid Lake for $300. Contact Lew Leichter at 805-934-2476. You can’t pass this up.

Thursday, June 14, 2018 at 6:30pm International House of Pancackes (IHoP), 212 Madonna Rd, SLO Greg Vinci – Author, Flyfisher’s Guide to California

After graduating from California State University Sacramento, Greg worked as a commercial photographer for a few years and then went on to a career in marketing and wholesale distribution. After twenty one years as the owner of Sierra Pacific Products, where he innovated many popular tackle and accessory products, Greg sold the business in 2010. Since then he has been able to re-establish a relationship with his first loves, writing & photography and his work can be now seen in many fly fishing and outdoor magazines. He has also just completed his first book Flyfisher’s Guide to California which was published in December of 2015.

In addition to writing and photography he also travels around California speaking to fly fishing clubs about some of the great fishing opportunities in the state. Among the subjects that Greg writes about are fly fishing (of course), California history, and the California wine industry. He also created and manages the web site www.california- flyfishing.com.

Greg has also kept his foot in the door of the fly tackle industry, so to speak, by continuing to develop fly tackle product lines on a consultancy basis for clients in the fly tackle industry. In 2011 his product Insta-Set Indicators was selected by Field & Stream magazine as the best fly tackle accessory of the year! One of his most recent endeavors has been to create the California- FlyFishing.com web site which is a portal to California's most popular waters. Greg also is a signature fly tier for the fly tackle industry’s most prominent fly manufacturer, Umpqua Feather Merchants and his fly patterns can be found in most fly shops around the country.

First Annual Club Outing with Scott Sugimoto to the Lower Sacramento River Art Chapman We had our first club outing with Scott Sugimoto on the upper reaches of the Lower Sacramento River in Redding during the first week in May and it was a success. There were six of us and Scott arranged two additional expert guides, Michael Noble, who owns FishFirst! Fly shop in Chico, and Chris Gearhart of Bent Rod fly Fishing Adventures out of Redding. Many of you know Scott Sugimoto who gave a well- received presentation at a club meeting last fall. The weather was perfect for our adventure. A few things worked against us, however. First, DFW closed the uppermost section of the river on April 1 to give the rainbows unmolested time to spawn. When we left the dock in the morning the guides rowed us out over the hundreds of large spawning fish holding over their reds. We seldom see that many trout in any river at one time. It was pretty dramatic. The second issue was a memorial guided tournament taking place the day we fished. The extra boats put pressure on the fish, so we had a slow first half of the day. The tournament boats left the water in the afternoon and fishing picked up later in the day. We knew there were lots of catchable fish in the water. Bob Bayer and I fished with Scott the Friday before and had our usual spectacular day. Scott is an unusual guide. If there is still light in the sky and water to fish, he will remain on the water until the last possible moment. The only thing you need for a good fishing day with Scott is stamina. We stopped for lunch together that included hot pulled pork, salads and fresh strawberries for desert. The second half of our float started just after the boats from the Fly Shop get off the water for the day and ended at dark. Fishers were even rewarded special prizes for catching the most and largest fish. Next year, we’ll have to add prizes for the fewest and smallest fish so I’ll have a chance to win something. As everyone who participated enjoyed the experience, we will plan a similar trip next spring. However, it will not be on the same weekend as the tournament, and we may move it to March to be able to fish the uppermost section of the river as the fish are concentrating there in preparation for the spawn. Last year we fished that section with Scott. The fishing was so good we decided to take the boat out of the water early and start the float at the top all over again. Scott has an advantage in that his boat is outfitted with an outboard motor, so we could fish the same seam as long as we were catching fish. No wonder he has so much energy left at the end of the day. You should give this trip a try next year.

Halibut Outing — Port San Luis July 14th Bernard Pieters We fly-fishers are all the time in search of (new) fishing water and have many times overlooked what our coastal waters have to offer! Just a few members have experience in halibut fishing. Considering the fishing location "almost in our backyard" it is surprising we don't see more members tap into this great fishing opportunity! To the novice of our halibut outing: This is the opposite of surf fishing where we constantly have the surf movements. Halibut fishing is not a numbers game, it is more like cat and mouse game. Having the correct line, leader, and fly set-up combined with your patience — concentration and persistence — and some good fishing tips, can greatly improve your chances to succeed in your effort to catch a halibut. Besides halibut, the smelt (like a trout) can also be in the bay, and are a lot of fun to catch. The fishing can be done from shore to 1-3/4 hour before high tide with this tide of 6.6ft. It is advisable to bring your pontoon so you can explore much more good fishing water. It is much safer to land your pontoon back to shore 1-3/4 hour before high tide or 1-3/4 hour after high tide. During this 2-3 hours of high tide the waves are much more turbulent and can make your landing less safe and more difficult. I can help with your fishing set-up and flies and get you started on the water WHERE: Port San Luis - parking lot north of the pier. WHEN: Saturday July 14th LOW TIDE: 6:00 am -1.5 ft HIGH TIDE: 11:31am GEAR UP: 6:30 am FISHING: around 7 am, to noon ? GEAR: Rod 6-8 wt Lines: floating, or floating plus 10 ft interme line,or a full interme line . Troutman Hex

The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, June 7th at 6:30. Rich Chubon will demonstrate the Troutman Hex. This pattern remains a favorite of Rich, especially when fishing the Lake Almanor Hex hatch. It is durable, has a great profile, and floats really well when sitting on the water.

Kelly Galloup developed this fly in the late 1970’s. As far as he knows, this was the first nationally tied Hex pattern and remained the only commercially tied Hex for nearly a decade. This is a Mid-western pattern, which was first used for the Hex hatch in Michigan. Over the years other Hex patterns were developed. Rich made one modification to the Troutman Hex pattern by substituting yellow foam for the under body.

Materials: The following are the material that will be used for the Troutman Hex: Thread - 6/0 yellow mono cord preferred; tan or light brown may be substituted Hook - Size #6 4x long Daiichi 1750 Tail - 4 strands of body moose hair Upper Body - Yellow foam strip ( ¼ inch wide), which is Rich’s substitute for yellow buck tail in the original pattern Over Body - Deer hair (a pencil width) in long strands that are stacked to cover the length of the body Wing - White calf's hair (a pencil width) in long enough stands to cover the length of the 4x hook Hackel - 1 grizzle and 1 brown hackle

All materials will be supplied except the thread. Bring 6/0 yellow mono cord (tan or light brown are good substituted.

Web Site: The link below is a video with Kelly Galloup explaining how he developed the pattern while giving tying instructions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9XnUj1zu60
