NEWS RELEASE for Immediate Release Ministry of Education 2021EDUC0032-000857 May 6, 2021 New, Seismically Safe Schools Open for Vancouver Students NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Ministry of Education 2021EDUC0032-000857 May 6, 2021 New, seismically safe schools open for Vancouver students VANCOUVER ʹThree new schools are open in Vancouver, supporting 1,400 students in seismically safe facilities as record investments continue to upgrade and replace high-risk schools throughout the city. ͞We know parents, families, students and staff need and expect seismically safe and dynamic learning environments,͟said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education. ͞From day one, our government has made investments in seismic safety a priority at B.C. schools, and now families are seeing concrete results of new and improved schools in their neighbourhoods.͟ Since September 2017, the Government of B.C. has invested over $325 million for seismic upgrades or replacements at 12 Vancouver schools, giving nearly 7,000 students a safer place to learn. Almost $70 million has been invested for three new replacement schools in Vancouver: Sir Sandford Fleming, Maple Grove and Lord Tennyson elementary schools. In addition, the $5.7- million seismic upgrades at Lord Selkirk Elementary school were completed on May 3, 2021. ͞It remains a priority of the board to ensure all students attend seismically safe schools as quickly as possible,͟said Carmen Cho, board chair, Vancouver School District. ͞We are delighted that students of Fleming, Tennyson and Maple Grove are now enjoying seismically safe replacement schools. These schools will serve generations to come, allowing students to thrive in seismically safe, modern learning environments.͟ Lord Tennyson and Sir Sandford Fleming feature new rooftop child care centres funded by the Province and the City of Vancouver, while all three new schools include separate before- and after-school care programming. Together, they offer a total of about 300 spaces. These new spaces provide more convenient options for parents to have their children cared for. ͞Access to quality child care close to home or work is critical to making life better for busy families,͟said Katrina Chen, Minister of State for Child Care. ͞Providing early years programming on school grounds is one of the ways we͛re supporting families and helping kids build a strong foundation for learning that helps set them on the path to success.͟ To further support students with safe learning environments, construction is also underway on the following schools: Dr. George M. Weir Elementary (seismic upgrade and partial replacement), expected to open in fall 2022; Edith Cavell Elementary (seismic upgrade), expected to be complete in spring/summer 2022; and David Lloyd George Elementary (seismic replacement), expected to open in winter 2022- 23. Seismic upgrades and replacements are part of the Province͛s work with B.C. school districts to provide all students with access to seismically safe seats as soon as possible. In the last four years, the Government of B.C. has approved over $1.1 billion in seismic upgrades or replacements at 55 schools provincewide, so more than 30,400 students can be better protected at school during an earthquake. Quotes: George Heyman, MLA for Vancouver-Fairview ʹ ͞The new Lord Tennyson Elementary school has been a welcome addition to students and families in my community, with a modern learning environment and new child care spaces that are transforming the neighbourhood. It͛s also a sign of things to come at the replacement of Henry Hudson Elementary, which we expect to be under construction next spring.͟ George Chow, MLA for Vancouver-Fraserview ʹ ͞People in Killarney are excited to see work underway on the seismic upgrade and partial replacement at Weir Elementary, which will provide a better, safer learning environment for students for generations to come. This investment is the result of our strong partnership with the Vancouver School Board, which is already paying dividends for families throughout the city.͟ Mable Elmore, MLA for Vancouver-Kensington ʹ ͞Families waited years to see Sir Sandford Fleming Elementary replaced with a school that fits the community͛s needs and provides the learning experience that students in the neighbourhood deserve. It is so exciting to see the new school open, and I can͛t wait to visit students and staff first-hand as soon as it is safe to do so.͟ Melanie Mark, MLA for Vancouver-Mount Pleasant ʹ ͞I am so pleased to see seismic upgrades now complete at Lord Selkirk Elementary school, giving students and staff a safe facility that can continue to serve the community for many more years. This is just another example of our government͛s commitment to investing in communities and the people who live in them.͟ Learn More: For a video tour of the new Lord Tennyson Elementary: https://youtu.be/OYipI-bIw0Q For a video tour of the new Sir Sandford Fleming Elementary: https://youtu.be/Q6HyZ_MHqV4 For a video tour of the new Maple Grove Elementary: https://youtu.be/GrCUgPjhafY Contact: Ministry of Education Government Communications and Public Engagement 250 356-5963 Connect with the Province of B.C. at: news.gov.bc.ca/connect.

The Honourable John Horgan The Honourable George Heyman Premier of British Columbia Minister, Environment & Climate Change Government of British Columbia Government of British Columbia April 15, 2020 Government planning of economic stimulus and recovery measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic Dear Premier Horgan and Minister Heyman, We, members of the Climate Solutions Council, would like to recognize the hard work of the B.C. Government during the COVID-19 global crisis and thank you for your efforts to protect the health and safety of British Columbians. The COVID-19 pandemic is having a significant impact on our province’s communities and economy, and we recognize the need to alleviate the short-term economic impacts from this crisis by supporting communities, businesses, and individuals who are, and will be, most affected. Once immediate relief is in place, the government will put forward an economic stimulus package designed for job creation and rebuilding the economy. We believe this is a critical opportunity to follow recent advice from the International Energy Agency, the UN and influential publications like The Economist, which have all advocated using stimulus to help rebuild a resilient, low-carbon economy. Economic growth and our strong climate policies go hand in hand and B.C.’s long history of climate action has built an enviable foundation for the province’s low-carbon industries and strong clean energy sector that will serve it well in recovering from the impacts of the pandemic. Therefore, we urge the Province to apply a climate and equity lens to all stimulus programs implemented to ensure that we promote the growth of a cleaner and more just economy, building on the objectives, values, and actions in CleanBC.

B.C. Today – Daily Report June 17, 2019 Quotation of the day “We need John Horgan and his government to step up and take action — any action — to help our small, forest-dependent towns get through this challenging time.” Liberal MLA Dan Davies (Peace River North) says the NDP government has not done enough to support forestry-dependent communities, as mills around the province continue to close and curtail production. • Provincial Species at Risk Legislation
To: The Hon. George Heyman, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy cc. The Hon. John Horgan, Premier; The Hon. Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development; and the Hon. Scott Fraser, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Dear Minister Heyman, Thank you for inviting input on provincial species at risk legislation. The undersigned environmental and animal welfare organizations have worked together closely to submit joint principles that would inform a meaningful law to safeguard the web of life as we know it in British Columbia, and give our species at risk a path to recovery. Science-based, expedited protection for species and ecosystems was never more urgent than it is today, in light of ongoing habitat destruction and the accelerating impacts of global warming. While much of the existing ecological damage can be attributed to the failure of previous governments to take steps to protect our threatened biodiversity, it is now your government’s responsibility to expedite new conservation steps before the loss of our biodiversity becomes unmanageable. BC’s new species at risk legislation must protect and recover at-risk species and rare plant communities first by protecting functional habitat and the ecological processes upon which the relevant species rely, and second by restoring habitat that has been degraded so that the necessary ecological processes can be recovered. Further details about what is needed in BC’s new law are set out in the attached document. Species at risk legislation alone will not, however, be enough to protect BC’s species and ecosystems in the long-term.

  • Daily Report September 18, 2019 Today in BC
B.C. Today – Daily Report September 18, 2019 Quotation of the day “We believe this is a wrong-headed project. We are exercising every bit of jurisdiction we can to defend British Columbia’s environment, our coast, our jobs with regulations and with environmental assessment conditions where appropriate.” Environment and Climate Change Strategy Minister George Heyman says the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion is “bad for British Columbia” as his ministry gears up to review the pipeline’s provincial environmental assessment certificate following a decision from the B.C. Court of Appeal. Today in B.C. Provincial appeals court gives B.C. the option to reassess provincial conditions on Trans Mountain pipeline expansion It ain’t over till it’s over. A pair of decisions released by the B.C. Court of Appeal yesterday could allow the province to place more conditions on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion — at least on the sections of the pipeline that run through B.C. and in areas that fall under provincial, rather than federal, jurisdiction. The court’s ruling allows for a “limited” appeal of the provincial environmental assessment certificate issued to Trans Mountain by the former B.C. Liberal government because it was based on the same flawed report that resulted in the Federal Court of Appeal overturning Ottawa’s original approval of the project. B.C.’s environmental assessment certificate and the 37 conditions it required of the pipeline expansion project are now subject to “reconsideration and consequent adjustment,” in light of changes the National Energy Board made in its February reconsideration report.
