The seminars will bring together scholars, artists, scientists, explorers, members of the public and museum professionals to examine the changing nature, impact and legacies of European exploration since the mid-18th century. The seminars will focus on today’s audiences and discuss the display and interpretation of the material culture of exploration within gallery, heritage and museum environments. Seminars will interrogate the relevance of the subject and issues surrounding its presentation in a post-imperial world. George Stubbs’ iconic paintings of a kangaroo and dingo, recently acquired by the National Maritime Museum, will provide a starting point for wider-ranging papers and discussion within a multi-disciplinary environment. Proposals of no longer than 250 words, for presentations of 20 minutes, should be sent to [email protected] by no later than Friday, 5 September 2014. We welcome submissions for papers and less-formal presentations from academics, curators, artists and other specialists in the fields. Proposals from

To the left of Victory’s main mast is the Union flag, which has been loosened by the French ship Redoutable which was dismasted. The Hilton Trafalgar Flags of St. Mary’s Church, Selling The National Maritime Museum has the rare and exciting opportunity to acquire two surviving flags from the Battle of Trafalgar, October 1805. The first is a Union Flag, from HMS Minotaur and was, we know, flown at the battle. The second is an Austrian ensign and is as interesting as the Union Flag. It is believed to have come from the Neptuno , the Spanish warship jointly captured at Trafalgar by Minotaur and Spartiate . Following the high profile sale of the Union Flag from HMS Spartiate in 2009, St. Mary’s Church, Selling in Kent approached the National Maritime Museum with an offer for the museum to purchase the two flags for £175,000. The Union Flag has been valued at £150,000 and the Austrian Ensign at £25,000. The National Maritime Museum is the preferred choice for the church - recognising the museum’s unique ability to care for such rare objects, to display them appropriately and to tell their amazing stories to our visitors.

Press release ROYAL OBSERVATORY GREENWICH’s INSIGHT INVESTMENT ASTRONOMY PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR – 2020 WINNERS ANNOUNCED French photographer Nicolas Lefaudeux has beaten thousands of amateur and professional photographers from around the globe to win the Royal Observatory Greenwich’s title of Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2020. As well as securing the £10,000 top prize, his image takes pride of place in the exhibition of winning photographs opening at the National Maritime Museum on 23 October 2020. The judges were captivated by Lefaudeux’s awe-inspiring image. Taken in Forges-les-Bains, Île-de-France, the photograph depicts a version of the Andromeda Galaxy seemingly at arm’s length. Competition judge Ed Robinson said: “To most of us, our closest neighbouring galaxy Andromeda can also feel so distanced and out of reach, yet to create a photograph that gives us the impression that it is just within our physical reach is truly magical, and somewhat appropriate as we adjust after such socially distanced times“. Winning images of the other categories and special prizes include the breath-taking Aurora Borealis above Hamn i Senja, Skaland, in Norway by Nicholas Roemmelt (Germany); the image taken by Łukasz Sujka (Poland) showcases the alignment of our moon and Jupiter, framed by three of Jupiter’s moons; a remarkable illustration of ‘The Prison of Technology’, the satellite trails between earth and the Albireo double star, which photographer Rafael Schmall (Hungary) managed to capture; and Best Newcomer Bence Toth’s stunning image of the central region of the California Nebula.
