The Trail of the Newfoundland Caribou

Rev. Faith March-MacCuish, Newfoundland and Labrador Conference Executive Secretary, led a church group on a spiritual pilgrimage to France and Belgium on the Trail of the Caribou from June 25 to July 4, 2016. The purpose of the journey was to visit all of the places that the Newfoundland Regiment served in the First World War. Each site has a Caribou monument and one of the Caribou is located in St. John's. The spiritual pilgrimage included people of the denominations that had young people serve in the Methodist Guards, the Anglican Church Lads' Brigade, the Catholic Cadet Corps and the Presbyterian-sponsored Highlanders.

I often wondered what it was like for those who were involved. What was it like: to be there in the trench- es; to leave the safety and supports of home; to venture to an unknown land that would have felt like a world away. →

Participants from the United Church, Presbyte- rian, Anglican and Catholic Churches gathered at the Caribou site in Masnieres; one of the five European sites of the Newfoundland Caribou where Newfound- land Regiment soldiers served.

The Explorer Project is a recent initiative that invites young adults who have not yet discerned a call to ministry into partnership with a church in another Conference. Sparked by conversations about recruit- ment for future ministry leadership, Toronto Conference rolled out the program in 2015. Newfoundland and Labrador Conference joined in the project for summer 2016. Chelsea Skanes left her home in St. John's to join her host congregation in Barrie, Ontario.
