Dear Friends,

Two months short of my ten-year anniversary serving as Director of The Gershman YÕs Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival, I could not be more elated to be a part of what I consider to be one of PJFFÕs most important seasons to date! With our fabulous new Chair, Francine Tabas, at the helm, PJFF37 arrives on the heels of two extraordinary seasons Ñ our celebratory (and record-breaking) 35th Anniversary and PJFF36, our ÒDouble ChaiÓ Festival that took place amidst one of the most controversial American presidential races of our time. We realize we have some tough acts to follow, but we are ready to present our community of film lovers an impressive new lineup of 35 films (29 events) from 20 different countries that will linger in hearts and minds for months to come.

We also have some exciting changes to our festival structure that I would like to bring to your attention. We listened to your pleas to offer more screenings in the surrounding suburbs of Philadelphia. In response, for the first time in PJFF history, we are offering a select number of simultaneous screenings that will make it possible for patrons who do not travel into the city to still participate in the Festival. These simultaneous screenings will take place on Sunday afternoons at 2 pm and Sunday evenings at 7 pm, as well as Wednesday evenings at 7 pm. If these screenings sell out, we will offer even more simultaneous showings in the future. This brings me to your next most noted request: repeat films. PJFF would love to show its fabulous films more than once and with your increased participation, we can! Invite your family, friends, and co-workers to the Festival this November to see the best new Jewish independent cinema from across the globe. With more sell-out crowds, PJFF will be incentivized to show multiple screenings of your favorite films in future seasons. YEARS

In addition to increasing the number of films shown in the suburbs, we are excited to announce two new film categories: ÒYoung & IndependentÓ and ÒTikkun Olam.Ó While all of our films have broad appeal, PJFFÕs Young & Independent films (featured in grey on our calendar on pages 4 and 5) are especially recommended for patrons in their 20s and 30s. 37 If interested in attending all four ÒYoung & IndependentÓ screenings, please see page 49 for more information. Our ÒTikkun OlamÓ film category (featured in blue on our calendar on page 5) recognizes films that raise awareness about injustice and other important human rights issues around the world.

In the past decade, thanks to your enthusiasm, patronage, and support, PJFF has come to be regarded as one of the top Jewish film festivals in the nation. We take this honor very seriously and strive to offer you, our filmmakers, and notable guests the best Festival experience possible. In addition to Francine Tabas, I must thank Phyllis Fischer and Iris THE 37TH PHILADELPHIA Drechsler; our fabulous PJFF Committee and Screening Committee; Maxine Gaiber, Kristen JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL Dougherty, and Matt Bussy; my wonderful Gershman Y colleagues; our talented PJFF interns NOVEMBER 4Ð19, 2017 and volunteers; and our amazing sponsors, supporters, advertisers, and community partners for helping to make the Festival what it is today.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, please think of PJFF as your Jewish film festival. You do not need to be affiliated with any group or ideology to be a part of the PJFF community. You do not need to be Jewish. You just need to show up (preferably early) with an open heart. In anticipation of PhiladelphiaÕs Israel 70 Fondly, celebration in 2018, PJFF begins the festival Olivia Antsis with four days of Israeli independent cinema. Director, PJFF

PHILADELPHIA PREMIERE THE ESSENTIAL LINK: THE STORY OF WILFRID ISRAEL sheds light on the extraordinary story of one of the great humanitarians of the 20th century. Wilfrid Israel was born into the Israel family, owners and operators of one of the largest and most successful department stores in Berlin. As the plight of the Jewish people in Germany continued to worsen, Wilfrid used his wealth and connections to arrange the emigration of over 10,000 Jews from Nazi-occupied Berlin.

PHILADELPHIA PREMIERE CENTERPIECE FILM The name Hedy Lamarr cannot help but conjure images of 1930s Hollywood pin-up babes and silver screen icons. A scandal at 18 and an international movie star by 22, LamarrÕs stunningly beautiful face remains among the most recognized and immortalized of the twentieth century.

Lamarr, who achieved international notoriety for her salacious role in the Czech film, Ecstasy (1933), was never quite able to shake off the reputation she earned in what is considered to be the first instance of explicit nudity ever depicted in mainstream film. As her career and romantic life evolved, so too did the endless examination and dissection surrounding her fame. Little did anyone know or care that beneath LamarrÕs exquisite beauty was a refined and ingenious brain that had much more to offer the world.

In BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY, Director Alexandra Dean uses four ÒlostÓ interviews conducted with Lamarr in 1990 as the basis for a documentary whose mission is to offer voice to the woman Lamarr wanted the world to know. These rare recordings fulfill LamarrÕs desire to be recognized for her intellect and her inventions, the latter of which have arguably served as precursors to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

With compelling commentary by family, friends, film scholars, scientists, and technology experts, as well as additional observations by famed director Mel Brooks and actor Diane Kruger, this class-act documentary tells the truly unbelievable story behind the unbelievable bombshell we know as Hedy Lamarr.

Join us after the film for a vintage Hollywood-inspired reception.

WE'LL ALWAYS HAVE CASABLANCA BOOK TALK & SIGNING Wednesday, November 15 | 2 PM | National Museum of American Jewish History מזל טוב

THE SMUKLER FAMILY congratulates PJFF Few films have inspired as much devotion in their viewers as Casablanca. With more revival screenings than any other film in the history of cinema and countless fans of all ages who have returned to it dozens Ñ or even hundreds Ñ of times, it is clear that, as time goes by, Casablanca remains as relevant as ever. Just in time for its 75th anniversary, join us years of Jewish Cinema for an unparalleled celebration of the film with an interactive talk by PJFF alumnus Noah 37 Isenberg, author of WeÕll Always Have Casablanca: The Life, Legend, and Afterlife of HollywoodÕs Most Beloved Movie. This fascinating exploration of the Academy Award- Entertaining, inspiring, challenging... winning filmÕs resonance through popular Ñ and political Ñ culture over the decades will be available for purchase at the National Museum of American Jewish History after the talk or may be purchased in advance at PJFF.org.

The name Casablanca conjures up images of Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, romance, adventure, and old-school glamour. Just as deserving of our attention is the charged political current that courses through the film, giving us ÒLa MarseillaiseÓ and that iconic parting on the tarmac. Viewers may be shocked to find that the inspiration for Everybody Comes to RickÕs, the play that would soon become Casablanca, was playwright Murray BurnettÕs urgent desire to warn his contemporaries that good people would need to take a stand to stop the encroaching threat of fascism.

Professor Noah Isenberg, Director of Screen Studies at The New School in New York City, will thrill devotees of the film with anecdotes about the on-set hijinks, grudges, rewrites, and censorship that threatened to compromise the filmÕs iconic story and most memorable lines. Meanwhile, IsenbergÕs electrifying overview of the political context of the film and its reverberations throughout modern history will appeal to believers in the power of art to transform hearts and minds.

Professor Noah IsenbergÕs presentation will include film clips from Casablanca.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Noah Isenberg is author of Edgar G. Ulmer: A Filmmaker at the Margins and editor of Weimar Cinema. He is the recipient of an NEH Public Scholar Award. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
