High School Celebrates Winterfest 2013

February 4 th -9th , the HS Student Council threw our annual Winterfest. During the week we put our game faces on for class vs. class floor hockey. To end the week on a high note, Friday we had an afternoon pep rally complete with the floor hockey tournament, tug of war and hoola hoop contests, a fisherman’s relay, dodgeball, and more to get us movin’. We also announced our court members during this time and had a little fun with some balloon popping! Court members this year included: Ricardo Castro and Elizabeth Kemnetz, Shannon Wal- ter and Cody Meyers, Janelle Newby and Raymond Lauer, Brock Akkerman and Nikki Bender, Chelsea King and Jon Koepke, Sarah Lauer and Matthew Nigh, Cody Walter and Aaron Thompson, and our Queen Macy Kla- bunde and King Lucas Marinack. Saturday we kicked off our shoes and had a great night dancing, playing Wii and ping pong, not to mention the raffle that had everyone on the edge of their seats checking their tickets! Thank you to all our staff and community for making a great Winterfest! What a great way to break up the sometimes long and dreary winter!

Tri-County Area School District March 2013 Page 2 Fourth Grade “In the Spotlight” Fourth graders have been very busy this year working on a lot of things! Reading: We are using the Daily 5 to structure our language arts block and “The Comprehension Toolkit” lessons by Stephanie Harvey to make reading comprehension meaningful. Students have more independence and choice in their reading and they are able to make connections to their everyday life. We have read “Because of Winn-Dixie,” “Little House in the Big Woods,” “Journey Back to the Lumberjack Camp,” and will be reading other selections like “Caddie Woodlawn,” and “A Cricket in Times Square,” just to name a few. Math: We started out the year working on place value and patterns. We have moved on to much harder math concepts including: Multi- plication, Division, Multi-digit Multiplication, Division with Remainders, Measurement, Patterns, Algebraic equations, and Elapsed Time. Here are a few of the other highlights- September: Westfield Rendezvous Encampment was a fun-filled day of history, and Homecoming October: Heart to Heart Get to Know You Poster and activities, School Forest, Halloween Party and Costume Parade, saw a perform- ance of “Bunnicula” at the PAC in Wautoma, Mr. Langenfeld came from the Renewable World Foundation to talk about “Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling,” Mr. Schoenstene was in to teach us about Fire Safety, and we watched a webcast hosted by Taylor Swift and Scholastic Books on the importance of reading. November: WKCE Testing, and Heart to Heart Christmas Past vs. Christmas Present Activity December: Heart to Heart activity was watching the HS Play together, Winter Music program, Santa’s Workshop, Christmas Party, made coat hanger Christmas Trees January: sent Flat Stanley on his adventures, planted potatoes and started our Agriculture unit, and played BINGO for Heart to Heart February: Started Iditarod project, Valentine’s Party, played board games with our Heart to Heart partners, and attended the Central Symphony Orchestra Concert sponsored by Scott and Candace Polzin Planned activities for the upcoming months: March: Track Iditarod musher’s progress, Share our new iPad minis with our Heart to Heart as we track our Iditarod musher and demon- strate other learning apps, The Ned Show sponsored by the PTA, March 14 th Pajama Reading Party, and watch the final “Battle of the Books” April: School Forest, watch the MS play with our Heart to Heart partners, Agriculture Field Trip May: Spring Concert, Rural Youth Safety Day May 10th, Heart to Heart Ice Cream Social, Potato Harvest As you can see, we have a busy life in fourth grade. Thank You!!!! The Tri-County 4 th grade classes, their teachers, and Mrs. Murray, K-6 music teacher, would like to sincerely thank Scott and Candice Polzin for their generous donation of covering the cost of the school bus so the 4 th graders could attend the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra performance of “Firebird Suite” and the story of “Peter and the Wolf.” The free performance was given at the Sentry Theatre on February 22. The students enjoyed learning about the instruments in the orchestra during music class and completing the CWSO activities leading up to the performance. This opportunity to attend this top-notch ballet and orchestra performance was a great culmination to our orchestra unit in school! Thank you Scott and Candice Polzin!

Thank-you to Eric and Kelly Weekly for donating their Monsanto donation of $5000.00 to the Tri-County Area High School, the money will be used for High School Technology. Each year Monsanto gives farmers from the state money that they can use for supporting a non- profit organization. Because of the drought in our area, Monsanto doubled the Weekly donation of $2500.00. We were very fortunate to be the recipient. Thank you again, Kelly, Eric and Monsanto. Amy Anderson I have enjoyed serving on the school board for the past six years, most recently in the position of clerk. I have one daugh- ter who is a 2009 graduate of Tri-County, and two daughters currently in high school . During the time I have been on the school board I have witnessed the hard work that students, faculty, parents, and administration have invested to help all of our students be successful. I look forward to being part of this team of education advocates for the future.

Wayne A. Cummings represents Area 2 (Towns of Rose, Oasis, Plainfield, and the Village of Plainfield). Mr. Cummings is a program technician for the USDA Farm Service Agency. He and his wife, Jennifer, have 4 children, one in school at Tri-County, one attending UW-Eau Claire, one which will graduate from the UW School of Law in May, and one which has graduated from UW-Platteville. Mr. Cummings graduated from Tri-County High School and attended UW-Madison. He is a member of the village board for the Village of Plainfield, is a member and treasurer of the Plainfield Lions Club, a Tri-County Booster Club member, and is an active member of the Plainfield United Meth- odist Church.

“I wish to continue to represent Area 2 as an open/active voice on the Tri-County School Board. My goal continues to be understanding the inner workings and policies of the district, which enables me to make informed and objective decisions. As an effective board member, I listen to not only my constituents, but to the employees and students of the district as well. In doing so, we all become partici- pants in the decisions made for the district. We are all aware that the district budget continues to be a huge challenge. As a board member, I intend to continue to provide input and suggestions of options to meet the district’s financial needs. I feel I have represented Area 2 constituents, as well as all members and employees, of the Tri-County School District to the best of my ability, being fair, honest, open, and respectful. Trusting me to be your voice, your questions and issues will continually be addressed.” April 2, 2013 April 2, 2013

Susan Lederer represents Area 3 (Towns of Deerfield, Colburn, Hancock, and the Village of Hancock). Susan is em- ployed by the Waushara County Health Department as a Public/Environmental Health Assistant. She and her husband, Roger, have one daughter at Tri-County and three older graduates. “I am proud to represent Area 3 on the Tri-County School Board. I enjoy being involved in the education of our youth. Since 1988, I have had at least one student attending Tri-County—three have graduated, and my youngest is in 11th grade. It is important to me that the students are afforded a well-rounded education which will prepare them for their adult lives either going into higher education or the workplace. This becomes ever more challenging, given today’s economic environment. I believe if we work together, keeping the common goal of offering the best education possible to our students, this will be possible.”

Hi, my name is Cindy Baumgartner and I am running for school board. I have lived in the Tri-County area for 29 years. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a degree in Natural Resources/Wildlife Ecology. I look forward to working with community members and TC employ- ees to make our school the best that it can be. Thank-you very much for your consideration.

Tri-County Area School District March 2013 Page 13 Help Tri-County Earn a Chance at a $10,000 Grant We know nothing is more important than the next generation, and Tri-County is always looking for new op- portunities to go above and beyond for our children. In order to continue to give our students the best edu- cation, we are asking for your help. We are asking all parents and school staff to ask local farmers to nomi- nate our district for the opportunity to compete for a $10,000 grant through America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education℠.

America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, gives eligible farmers the oppor- tunity to grow the next generation by nominating a rural public school district in their community to compete for a grant to enhance education in the areas of science and math. The Monsanto Fund will award 194 grants this year across the United States. More than $2.3 million will be donated to rural school districts across 39 states, and at least nine $10,000 grants will be awarded in Wisconsin.

This is where we need your help. We would like to apply for a $10,000 grant, and we plan to use the money for technology equipment to enhance our curriculum in the areas of math and science. Our school district could be one of the winners, but we need your help to be. So, please get out in the community and talk to local farmers about nominating our school district for this unique opportunity.

Grants will be awarded based on merit, need and community support. The more farmers to nominate our school district, the more it demonstrates community support and strengthens our application. Tell your fam- ily, friends and neighbors to spread the word. Promotional materials, such as flyers and newsletters, are available for your use at GrowRuralEducation.com . You can also help get the word out by posting on Face- book or tweeting on Twitter.

Visit GrowRuralEducation.com for more information. If you are an eligible farmer and would like to nominate Tri-County today, you can do so at GrowRuralEduca- tion.com or by calling 1-877-267-3332 . The nomination period runs through April 15, 2013. Contact Peter Dassow at 715-335-6366 ext. 4380 with questions.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. During the month of April our agency, in partnership with area civic groups and businesses, sponsors Blue Ribbon Kid's Day: A Better Tomorrow for All Kids. This family fun and informational fair is a free family focused event provided to area families. .
