Annual Report 2012 Developing the Next Generation of American Leaders

CEO’s Message

I am pleased to report that 2012 was a very successful year for JSA. Every four years, the presidential elections inject JSA’s civic engagement programs with additional vigor, and 2012 was no exception. In addition to debate-watch parties for students and alumni, we held special regional election conferences and week-long programs at the Democratic and Republican National Conventions.

This year, while many of our elected officials in Washington were stymied by political gridlock and hyper-partisanship, JSA student leaders nurtured their statesmanship skills as they engaged in civilized political discourse. Through our student-run programs they cultivated democratic leadership skills, JSA 2011-12 challenged one another to think critically, 35 States & Territories advocated their own opinions, developed respect for opposing views and learned to rise 409 Chapters above self-interest to promote the public good. 9,405 Members Northeast PacNW 50 On top of the growth in our student-run 26 1,289 programs this year, we are particularly pleased 658

2 - Junior State of America 2012 Annual Report Focus on the 2012 Elections

Teens Journey to the RNC and DNC Conventions

Every four years JSA takes a group of students to the Demo- cratic and Republican National Conventions. This year students attended symposia at the RNC in Tampa, FL, August 26-31, 2012 and at the DNC in Charlotte, NC, 11 JSA Election 2012 Conferences September 2-7, 2012. The 2012 Election Symposia gave 1,726 Student Participants the students a unique opportu- nity to experience the excitement of a Presidential election year in the 241 Participating Schools center of the action. Students participated in Q&A sessions with party officials, Members of Congress, other “super delegates,” journalists, NEW Chapters Participating powerful lobbyists, interest group activists and pollsters. Throughout 45 the week faculty provided academic context to help the students digest and analyze the convention experience. Evening activities Beyond the Sound Bite included group discussions, student debates and simulations.

At the JSA Election 2012 one-day conferences, representa- tives of the Romney and Obama campaigns captured the thrill and excitement of the election season. Students had the chance to evaluate the candidates on their merits, quali- fications and positions on the issues. The conferences were a unique opportunity to look beyond the sound bites and TV ads to determine the best candidate to lead the country. Dramatic mock elections were held to select the students’ choice for president.

Conventions JSA sponsors over 30 overnight conventions each year (Fall State, Winter Congress, Spring State). These events are debate-oriented and allow students to discuss economic, social and foreign policy with their peers. Conventions are held in ten different regions across the country. Roundtable discussions, policy simulations and other hands- on activities help students critically examine the political landscape. At the Winter Congress, students experience “how a bill becomes a law.” Past topics have included: the death penalty, abortion, the legalization of marijuana, the “Dream” act and others.
