MOCA Cleveland Spring Exhibition Release.Doc.Docx FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Sarah Rehm MOCA Cleveland 216.658.6938 [email protected] MOCA Cleveland Announces Fall 2013 Exhibitions Michelle Grabner’s First Comprehensive, Solo Show Opens November 1 CLEVELAND (November 1, 2013) – MOCA Cleveland will open its fall 2013 exhibitions on November 1 with Chicago-based artist Michelle Grabner’s first comprehensive solo museum show, and a survey of works from the past five years by Simon Evans, a British artist based in New York. The upcoming season’s exhibitions continue to call attention to important artists working today and explore their ways of working, providing visitors with in-depth presentations and rich experiences. Both exhibitions will include newly commissioned works, which continue to engage the architecture of MOCA Cleveland’s new building. The 2014 exhibition programs are supported in part by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, HUGO BOSS, the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, Thompson Hine LLP, and Leadership Circle gifts from the Britton Fund, Agnes Gund, Scott Mueller, Joanne Cohen and Morris Wheeler, Margaret Cohen and Kevin Rahilly, Doreen and Dick Cahoon, Becky Dunn, Harriet and Victor Goldberg, Donna and Stewart Kohl, and Toby Devan Lewis. All MOCA Cleveland exhibitions and programs are presented with major support from The William Bingham Foundation, Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, The Cleveland Foundation, The George Gund Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Nesnadny + Schwartz, The Ohio Arts Council and the continuing support of the Museum’s Board of Directors, patrons, and members. Michelle Grabner: I Work From Home (November 1, 2013–February 16, 2014) Organized by David Norr, Chief Curator The fall kicks off with Michelle Grabner’s first comprehensive solo museum exhibition, I Work From Home. The exhibition will survey Grabner’s paintings from 1993 to the present alongside an extensive selection of the artist’s photographs, video works, sculptures, and collaborations with other artists, which investigate themes of repetition, work, and the dynamics of domestic life. A particular focus of the exhibition is Grabner’s paintings, including her earliest representational works based on textile patterns from her domestic environment to her shift in focus on abstraction. MOCA Cleveland’s presentation comes at a moment when the artist is being widely recognized for her important contributions to the field, including her selection as a co-curator of the 2014 Whitney Biennial. An important feature of the exhibition is a replica of The Suburban, the eight-by-eight-foot project space that she and her husband and frequent collaborator, Brad Killam, have maintained next door to their home in Oak Park, Illinois since 1998. Over the years, this project space has hosted the work of over 200 artists, both emerging and internationally known, gaining an international reputation. For the exhibition, MOCA Cleveland will rebuild a replica of The Suburban in its Main Gallery to accommodate a series of projects and related programs. Artists featured will include Karl Haendel (November 1–26, 2013); Michael Smith (December 1- 31, 2013); Amanda Ross-Ho (January 5–22, 2014); and Jessica Jackson Hutchins (January 26– February 16, 2014). Additionally, Grabner and Killam will create a new hanging sculpture for the Museum’s Donna and Stewart Kohl Atrium as the second installment in the Museum’s annual Atrium Commission series. “Michelle’s art will be very compelling for our audiences. They will see first-hand the discipline of her process, and the impressive results of more than 20 years of dedicated studio practice. This is an artist who has reshaped the Midwest art scene from her backyard, and she is the perfect example of how an artist can create space for production and dialog outside of typical art centers,” said Norr. ARTIST BIO: Michelle Grabner (b. 1962, Oshkosh, Wisconsin) lives and works in Oak Park, Illinois. Solo exhibitions of her work have been held at PEREGRINEPROGRAM, Chicago; INOVA, The University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; Minus Space, Brooklyn; Ulrich Museum, Wichita; and University Galleries, Illinois State University. She has been included in group exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Tate St. Ives, UK; and Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland. Simon Evans: Only Words Eaten by Experience (November 1, 2013–February 16, 2014) Organized by Rose Bouthillier, Assistant Curator Concurrently opening in the Toby Devan Lewis Gallery is an overview of the past five years of work by British artist Simon Evans, including text-based drawings, weavings, sculptures, and embroideries. This exhibition, titled Only Words Eaten by Experience, is Evans’s first solo show in the Midwest. The exhibition invites visitors into the mind of the artist as he tries to make sense of his world, offering glimpses of his humor and vulnerability. Evans uses a meticulous process to assemble simple materials like paper scraps, scotch tape, pencil shavings, and white-out into diagrams, maps, and flowcharts that obsessively catalogue fragments of life and share confessional, often humorous, observations. The exhibition will be accompanied by a new text-based installation, titled Existing Models of Escape (2013), in the interior of the Museum’s Kohl Monumental Stair. “Simon’s art is extremely personal and honest. His work explores the complexities of contemporary life and the ways we all cope with reality, relationships, and our own imperfect selves—which can be in turns beautiful, dark, pathetic and brave,” says Bouthillier. ARTIST BIO: Simon Evans (b. 1972, London, UK) lives and works in New York. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM), Luxembourg; Aspen Art Museum; White Columns, New York; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. A travelling two-person exhibition featuring Evans and Öyvind Fahlström was held at Kunshtal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Germany. In Jessica Jackson Hutchins’ work, drawings tend towards sculpture, sculptures tend toward furniture, and paintings hover on the borders of materialization. They describe a precarious state of instability and portray their own working process in almost literal terms as expansive, absorptive and self-generating. The works are characterized by a seemingly automatic tendency to attract whatever happens to be around them – items of the artist’s or her family’s clothing, kitchen crockery, pieces of furniture, or words that happen to be on her mind. Though the various relics appear to have been arrived at through casual means, there is nonetheless an intrinsic value in the old t-shirt or coffee mug that make their way into one of her sculptures. Suggesting undisclosed memories and associations, they bring us closer to a cumulative existence construed from the repetitive tasks and the minor rituals of the everyday. The collisions of found domestic objects with self-made, expressively moulded ceramics describe experience at the level of the tactile and a responsive rather than systematic working method. The works become diaristic in their incidental observations about how we move amongst our belongings, and small-scale reactions to the effects of time passing and the clutter that accumulates around a life. The tables and chairs in Hutchins’ work exist somewhere between domestic fragment and pedestal.

Zabriskie Point presents a group of artists that utilize familiar objects or images and re­present them with unusual physical or conceptual components. Much like Antonioni’s 1970 film, "Zabriskie Point," these works incorporate formal elements that are suspended amongst strong narrative glimpses and memories. The stories that punctuate Antonioni’s film are placed within a context of surreality in a way that creates a sense of displacement. This exhibition brings together artists that are exploring similar ideas across a variety of media and techniques. Sarah Braman was born in Tonawanda, NY, and lives and works in Amherst, MA and New York, NY. She received her MFA from Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia, PA, in 1998 and her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD, in 1992. Braman is one of the founders of artist­run Canada, in New York. In 2013, she was the recipient of the Maud Morgan Prize from MFA, Boston.     Artspace Karen Rosenberg August 6, 2015 The artist Jessica Jackson Hutchins (Photo courtesy of the artist and Marianne Boesky Gallery) Jessica Jackson Hutchins on Becoming an Accidental Painter & Building a New Art Scene in Portland By: Karen Rosenberg August 6, 2015 The sculptor Jessica Jackson Hutchins stole the spotlight at the 2010 Whitney Biennial with a plucky piece of contemporary Americana, a sofa crowned with ceramic vessels and papered with news clippings about President Obama. The next few years found her on the move—from Portland to Berlin and then back again— along the way adjusting her mix of readymade and crafted objects to accommodate whatever was close at hand. All that relocation and improvisation proved to be invigorating. Hutchins’s show this past spring at Marianne Boesky in Chelsea, her first with the gallery and her first appearance in New York in a half-decade, wowed critics with room after room of boisterous and confident works. Some, like the massive Ultrasuede Wave, were pieces of cushy upholstered furniture crushed by lumpen ceramic boulders; others, like Third Eye, were abstract paintings that veered off into Rauschenbergian assemblage with folding chairs attached to their stretcher bars. Both of these works will be on view next month in “Confessions,” Hutchins’s two-venue solo exhibition in Portland (at Reed College’s Cooley Gallery and the collector-run space known as the lumber room.) It’s the first show in the Pacific Northwest for Hutchins, who lives in Portland with her musician husband Stephen Malkmus (the former Pavement frontman, now leading Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks) and their children.

    Jessica Jackson Hutchins Restless Animal Kingdom February 25 - April 18, 2020 Performance and Opening Reception on March 5, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Marianne Boesky Gallery is pleased to present Restless Animal Kingdom, artist Jessica Jackson Hutchins’ third solo exhibition with the gallery. Hutchins’ practice embraces an expansive array of materials and approaches, from wall-mounted assemblages to fused glass works to ceramics installed atop couches, recliners, and chairs. Inspired by found objects and images from her personal life, Hutchins allows her materials—and the ways they connect to her hands and body—to drive the form and experience of her work. For her upcoming exhibition, the Portland, Oregon-based artist will present a selection of new, large-scale ceramics, including several sculptures that can be worn— bringing the presence of the body even more directly into view in her creative output. The exhibition will be open from February 25 - April 18, 2020 at the gallery’s 507 W. 24th Street location. On March 5, in conjunction with Armory Art Week, Marianne Boesky Gallery will host a special reception featuring a performance developed by Hutchins in collaboration with dancers from the Trisha Brown Dance Company and Antonio Ramos and the Gang Bangers in New York. Throughout the evening, performers outfitted in Hutchins’ wearable ceramics and clothing screen-printed by the artist will move through the gallery to the music of cellist Ayu Wang, performing a range of improvised motions and serving food and beverages from the vessels. By activating her ceramics through dance as well as through functional use, Hutchins extends her ongoing exploration of the relationship between fine art and the objects of our everyday lives.

    Anna Betbeze, Josh Brand, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Josh Tonsfeldt January 17 – February 23 Mitchell-Innes & Nash is pleased to present a four-person exhibition in Chelsea featuring Anna Betbeze, Josh Brand, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, and Josh Tonsfeldt. Josef Albers wrote that “the origin of art [is] the discrepancy between physical fact and psychic effect.”1 For these four artists, physical fact is a starting point– from Josh Brand‟s reliance on the simple interaction between objects, light and chemicals in the darkroom, to Anna Betbeze‟s use of pre-existing shag rugs as „canvas;‟ from Josh Tonsfeldt‟s reconfigured shipping pallets that have traveled through a cargo supply chain, to Jessica Jackson Hutchins‟s sculptures with household furniture that has accrued years of wear and tear. Each artist works at the margins of genre, and each allows an element of chance or material history to affect surface, substituting the physical memory of the source material for the deliberate gesture. There is an experimental quality to their work: a mad-scientist approach that yields curious, enigmatic results. Despite their reliance on “givens” from chemical, industrial, or physical processes beyond their control, each of them imbues their work with a peculiarly hand-wrought and human quality. Josh Brand uses photographic processes to create unique objects that often do not read as photographs. He reworks them with ink and mixed media until their origin in the photographic realm is barely discernible. Anna Betbeze paints – and burns, cuts, and tears – on Flokati rugs. These shaggy, unwieldy surfaces evoke wildness more than domesticity, and Betbeze‟s controlled interventions only exaggerate their inherently unruly quality.
