Childbirth is a significantly aggravating event to the body homeostasis, particularly increasing Vata dosha. The mother’s body has to recover from an increase in dry, mobile, light, and cold qualities after the loss of fluids, energy, and the large space where baby lived for 9 months.

Not to mention the loss of sleep and fatigue that comes from nourishing the newborn, and one can see how tending to the mother’s vitality is extremely important to a healthy postpartum recovery and growing child. Digestion is fragile. There is a huge amount of invisible work performed by the body. Improper foods can cause constipation, gas, depression, and other complication for mother or baby.

Emotions and hormones effect and are affected by the food we ingest. Ayurveda teaches that opposites bring balance. Therefore, we take care of mother with the opposite qualities: moist, heavy, warm, oily, smooth, and stable. A specific diet is followed with foods and spices of these qualities that aide digestion, promote lactation, stabilize moon, and enable recovery on the deepest level. At Ayurveda Kitchen, we know you can only absorb what you can digest. That's why we tend the flame of digestion to optimally get you (and baby) the nutrients the body needs for postpartum healing. First Four Days Start slow. Think of what your abdominal organs have just been through. Your body is focused on cleansing, activating lactation, and replenishing fluids. Foods that are simple, warm, and soft require less energy to digest. Thats why we offer our First Four Days menu: "ready" blood while providing sustenance, nutrients, and tastes your body craves.

Days 4 - 10: Replenish Warm, cooked, and soft are qualities we incorporate throughout the postpartum healing. Our focus now is moving the bowels, cultivating digestion, immune protection, and building a healthy milk supply. An abundance of healthy fats like ghee, digestive spices, cooked garlic, and appropriate vegetables are incorporated.

Days 10 - 21: Rebuild Digestion is strengthened. Focus is on grounding, lactation health for growing baby, and forming new muscle tissue. We continue to build digestive capacity and nutrient assimilation. Vegetable variety is increased, as well as fresh, non-fermented cheese, soaked nuts and seeds, and unleavened flatbreads.

Week 4 to 6: Rejuvenate Oh the decadence! This phase is solely focused on rejuvenating your vitality and deepest tissues. Your digestion is strong and your milk supply abundant.
