TEAM NOTES:

DEADLINE DEALIN’ The Penguins made their trade deadline splash late Sunday night/early Monday morning, acquiring two-time Stanley Cup champion Jeff Carter from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a 2022 conditional third-round draft pick and a 2023 conditional fourth-round draft pick.

This year, the Kings’ alternate captain has tallied eight goals, 11 assists and 19 points in 40 games. The two-time NHL All-Star (2009, ’17) has recorded 751 career points (390G-361A), including 113 power-play goals, 18 shorthanded goals and 83 game-winning goals in 1,080 career NHL games with Los Angeles (2012-21), Columbus (2011-12) and Philadelphia (2005-11).

Since his NHL debut during the 2005-06 season, Carter’s 83 game-winning goals and 390 total goals rank second and eighth (tied), respectively, among all NHL players.

SPRINGING INTO ACTION Since the calendar flipped to March and into April, the Penguins have been one of the best teams in the NHL. Since March 1, Pittsburgh is tied for the second most wins (16) and points (33) in the league while ranking near or at the top in many categories:

Category NHL Rank Wins (16) T-2nd Points (33) T-2nd Goals For (86) T-2nd GF/GP (3.91) 2nd PP % (30.7) 2nd 1st Period Goals (28) 1st Wins Trailing First (7) 1st

Individually, the Penguins are well represented in NHL scoring since March 1 as Sidney Crosby ranks fourth with 30 points (9G-21A) and Jake Guentzel has the seventh most points with 28 (13G-15A) in the span. Since March 1, Guentzel has the fourth most goals (13) while Crosby has the second most assists (21).

GETTIN’ TRICKY Jake Guentzel was a force on Sunday night, netting his third-career hat trick in Pittsburgh’s 5-2 win. The hat trick was the Penguins’ second of the season (Bryan Rust, 3G on Mar. 27 vs. NYI) and despite being the first Penguin this season to reach the 20-goal plateau, it marked Guentzel’s first multi-goal game of the season. Guentzel, who ranks seventh in the NHL in goals, has the fourth-most games played with a goal this season:

Player GP w/a Goal Auston Matthews 23 Mikko Rantanen 21 Alex Ovechkin 19 Jake Guentzel 18 Connor McDavid 17

Guentzel enters tonight’s game riding a six-game point streak (6G-5A). Only Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon (10 games), Ottawa’s Connor Brown (8 games) and Detroit’s Adam Erne (7 games) have a longer active point streak than Guentzel.

THE CROSBY FACTOR Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has quietly put together an excellent 2020-21 campaign. Crosby enters tonight’s game tied for eighth in league scoring, but tied for first among all East Division skaters (BOS – Brad Marchand, 48) with 48 points (16G-32A) in 41 games. The captain has more multi-point games this season (14) than games without a point (12).

Crosby’s defensive numbers have been equally as impressive as his offensive output. He enters tonight’s game:

• With the third-most faceoff wins in the NHL (513)

• Ranked 12th in the NHL with a win percentage of 56.8% on defensive zone faceoffs (min. 100 DFO)

• With the second-most (tied) takeaways in the league (39)

• With the most (tied) blocked shots (22) among Pittsburgh forwards

Crosby has 19 points (5G-14A) over his last 12 games, helping Pittsburgh to an 9-2-1 record during that span.

PROSPEROUS POWER-PLAY The Penguins power play stayed hot on Sunday night, scoring on its only attempt of the game. Pittsburgh has tallied a power-play goal in five straight games (6 PPG) and eight of the last nine games (11 PPG) dating back to March 25.

Since March 25, the Penguins have the highest power-play percentage (40.7%) in the league and are tied for the most power-play goals (11):

Team PPG PP % Pittsburgh 11 40.7% Minnesota 9 34.6% Washington 11 31.4% NY Rangers 10 31.3% Dallas 8 28.6%

87 WITHOUT 71 With Evgeni Malkin out week-to-week with a lower-body injury, the Penguins will look for leadership from their captain Sidney Crosby who has historically produced with Malkin out of the lineup:

Situation GP G A PTS. PTS/GP Without Malkin 155 66 126 192 1.24

This year without Malkin, the captain has 19 points (5G-14A) in 13 games.
