*Starters in 1959 PROSPECTS

Last year Coach Doyt Perry only greeted 13 letter- men to start the '59 season but went on to an undefeated untied season, the Mid-American Conference champion- ship and the national college division championship. This season will begin with 21 lettermen from this illustrious team that must go down in BG's 41-year grid- iron history as its greatest. Of course, Perry and his staff would like to defend all their laurels but this would be a big order for any of collegiate football's great teams. But the fighting Falcons will give it a try with 16 varsity reserves joining with the lettermen brigade. This gives Perry some good experience to choose from. Up from a freshman team that had a 3-2 record come 17 numeral winners. Many of the yearlings will have a diffi- cult task breaking into the first two teams. Up in the line, ends will be one of Perry's biggest problems. For the past two years BG has been blessed with such outstanding wingmen as Ray Reese, Ron Black- ledge, Tom Colaner and Jerry Roberts. Three lettermen are returning but none of them are this top caliber yet. Clarence Mason has shown well offensively while Dick Newsome and Larry Smith have been defense standouts. Willis Jones, the biggest end at 218, has possibilities. Angelo Privitera, the MAC 220 dash champ, will get a try at a flank post. Tom Hogrefe is another first year prospect. Perry feels that his tackles are as good as anybody in the league. Bob Bird was a starter last year, Jerry Croft saw plenty of action behind Bob Zimpfer and Ralph White was another mainstay reserve. Al Kebl also gathered enough playing time for a letter. All except Kebl run over 220 pounds so the size is there. Bob Rey- nolds, 6-6, 240-pound sophomore, may push some of the veterans. The guard depth isn't as strong as Perry would like to see it but co-captain Jerry Colaner was a starter most of season. Ed Phillips, who moved from nowhere to the starting lineup by fourth game only to get injured in that game, could move in again. Dave Radlinski, another regular performer, gives Perry three good regulars. Ray Kwiatkowski, last year's regular center, has been moved to guard and could easily be a starter. Junior Mervin Ward and sophomores Gary Sherman, Keith Sommer, Jim Was- serman and Larry Stebleton are next in line. At center veteran Ron Williams will be first choice. Lou Youskievicz is coming fast as his understudy. After these two, Perry must look to sophomores Asa Elsea and Bob Blue. Elsea will see action as a place kicker. Overall the line won't be as heavy as last year, noticeably lighter at end, to bring the average just slightly over 200. The speed should be good with ex- cellent blockers, both in the line and downfield. A good race is expected at quarterback where all- MAC Bobby Colburn and his chief understudy, Dave McClain, are gone. Jim Potts might have the inside as the pre-season drills start but Jack Harbaugh, the de- fensive safety man last season for Colburn, will get a try. Bob Fearnside, returning from military service, has plenty of capabilities of developing. He could be the man before the season gets rolling well. Arch Tunnell will be battling and might surprise the pack. Perry has halfbacks in good quality and quantity. This is the strongest spot on the team with five lettermen and six other reserves. Starters Chuck Comer and Bernie Casey were one-two in last year's rushing. Russ Hepner may give Comer a real fight for the left side post. Wayne Mauk will help out behind Casey, along with Jim And- rews. Don Lisbon looks like the top sophomore. Al Junior could be a real threat with his speed. Three seasoned fullbacks are available. Rober Klic- man, who did a fine offensive job last year, will battle his Cleveland colleague John Ruper, a defensive stand- out. Bob Reublin is another good veteran. Offensively, Perry will be trying to keep his club up to the 347 yard average they have gained over his 45 games at BG. The running game could be one of the best that a Perry team has shown. He hopes to open it up with an aerial game that probably won't be as strong as last year when Colburn passed for several new team records. The Falcons will also be out to again lay claim to the MAC defensive title, allowing ony slightly over 200 yards per game in 1959. With a fine record to live up to, the 1960 Falcons should be another excellent team with the possibilities of following close behind the '59 mark and a real con- tender for more MAC, Ohio and national honors.

Twice Ohio Coach-of-the- Y e a r, UPI Coach-of-the- W e e k, recipient of the Washington Touchdown A- ward as coach of the nation- al college division cham- pions, developer of 15 all- Ohio and all Mid-American Conference selections, and a Little all-American, one of the nation's outstanding clinc speakers, and owner of the second best collegiate coaching record in America today. These are a few of the accomplishments of Doyt L. Perry in the short period of five years that the short- statured BG alumnus has headed the BG football program. Perry climaxed his head coaching career last season with the first undefeated-untied season in 41 years of football. With the 9-0-0 came the honor of being named by United Press International the top college division team in the nation. The victory string gave Perry a 37-4-4 record which is only slightly behind that of of Oklaho- ma. Under Perry, the Falcons have never been below a third place tie in the MAC. In 1956, BG took the league toga on 7-7 tie with Miami, the Redskins playing one less game than the rest of the league, and the Falcons took the crown. Perry has a fabulous record against non-conference foes having never lost a game for a 15-0 mark. This rec- ord has been accomplished against such powers as Wichi- ta, Dayton, Xavier of Ohio, Drake and Delaware. Along with a winning record at BG, Perry has brought an outstanding staff of young coaches and edu- cators, a fine group of young men who excel in the classroom as well as on the field, and a winning spirit among the students, faculty and staff, alumni and other BG sport followers that is second to none in the Midwest. Perry's teams have been offensive minded outfits, averaging over 347 yards per contest in the 45-game record but the former Ohio State aide always comes up a better-than-average defensive record. Perry is a firm believer that mistakes lose ball games so that fumbles, interceptions and penalties are things that BG players work the hardest to avoid. Passing has always played its part in the BG attack, last year's team setting a new aerial record, accounting for more than 40 per cent of the offensive showing. But being a winning coach is nothing new to Perry. Ever since he received his degree from BG in 1932, the diminutive Falcon 3-sport star has turned out winning teams. After four years of successful basketball and track coaching at Lorain Clearview, Perry instituted football in 1937 there and in six years had a 32-9-4 record, includ- ing four league championships. His basketball and track records at Clearview were even better than his football mark. In 1943 Perry moved to Upper Arlington as head football and basketball coach. His first football team at the Columbus suburb had a 7-2 season and the basket- 20 ball team was undefeated until semi-finals of the district tournament. After a 3-year U.S. Navy hitch, Perry returned to Upper Arlington in 1946 but limited his coaching duties to football. In the next five years, Perry had two unde- feated teams and won or shared the Central Buckeye title four times. . .In.1951 selected Perry to join him in his initial year at Ohio State where he served four years as backfield coach and was considered by Hayes as the offensive statistical brain of the 1954 Rose Bowl and Western Conference champion Buckeye squad. During his undergraduate days at Bowling Green, Perry was an outstanding athlete. He was quarterback on the 1929-30-31 teams that went 18 games without a :, loss. He won all-NWOC honors for two seasons and all- Ohio mention as a senior. He was a regular forward for three seasons in basketball and finished his 9-letter career with three awards at shortstop. He received his secondary education at Hartford high m Croton (Licking County) Ohio where he was a 3-sport participant. Mrs. Perry is the former Loretta Zeroll of Elyria. They have three children, Judy 19, a BGSU junior, David, 13, and D. L., 9.
