BID NOVEMBER RARE SOUL AUCTION & A BAD WEATHER INC. I NEVER NEVER KNEW BAD WEATHER M- 400 100 Very rare 1976 release infrequently offered up for sale on its original label; a tiny imprint from Kinder, Louisiana owned by Mike Lachney and this would appear to be its only release. Popular enough in the early noughties to warrant a UK release – the original is the way to own it. B BETTY BROOKS THERE MUST BE A LOVE LE CAM 107 VG++ 200 SOMEWHERE In 1975 Ede Robins’ vocal to ‘Soul Symphony’ created a storm on the Northern scene but it would be many years before it was known that a second, superior, vocal version existed. Strangely enough, when popularity beckoned this rare release in the UK it was the instrumental flipside ‘Funky Funky’ that packed the dancefloors. C BARBARA ACKLIN I’M NOT MAD ANYMORE SPECIAL AGENT VG+ 100 203 WD 0 Only the third copy we have had in 35 years! Barbara’s first recording, it’s a promo although the only clue to this aspect is the ‘not for sale’ watermark in the paper, curiously, the song is written by the New York duo of Pam Sawyer and Lori Burton – wonder how it ended up as an obscure B-side? D LITTLE EDDIE TAYLOR I HAD A GOOD TIME PEACOCK 1949 D M- 305 There were many soul/blues artists known as ‘Little’ but not many of them (if any) were actually affected by dwarfism. Little Eddie (who made only one other record) was 2 ! feet tall and ‘packed with dynamite’ apparently. Always one of the rarer records on Don Robey’s Peacock label, the condition of this storming cut will be hard to supersede. E BERNARD SMITH NEVER GONNA LET YOU SPECTRUM 111 M- 575 GO It’s difficult to pick a superior side on this double-sided crossover gem so we have included ‘Man Without A People’ on the soundbite too. This New York label is packed with good soul and this is amongst the very best. A soulful number that was actually Smith’s swansong after fronting Carolinas band Jokers Wild. F SAM WILLIAMS LOVE SLIPPED THROUGH TOWER 367 VG++ 150 MY FINGERS WD 0 What words can be added to a track that totally put the soul into Northern? The quality is sky- high, how could Tower fail to put it out beyond the promo stage. Strong VG++ but has one second cue burn (of course all copies are styrene). Take a listen to the soundbite to check it out. G SATIN YOUR LOVES GOT ME SHELL 1004 VG++ 560 One more version of this great Floyd Smith song, (that’s 5 and counting) every one of them excellent, every one of them scarce. Flipside hits more of a faster groove in the style of Sam and Dave’s ‘Soul Man’ but it great in its own right. H STORMY I WON’T STOP TO CRY TWINIGHT 104 VG++ 515 Staying with the Windy City and one of the rarer items on the famed Twinight label. Stormy was actually a name for the record’s co-producer John Colley and the other producer Howard Scott was one of the Scott Brothers. Flipside, ‘The Devastator’ is funky-edged Northern well worth a listen on the soundbite. Condition is a strong VG++ with just a couple of light marks. I THE CHANDLERS YOUR LOVE MAKES ME COL SOUL 1152 M- 800 LONELY Lovely copy of this great piece of churning Ohio soul started in Accrington by the late Andy Ridings and later popularised by Patrick Brady (with these events happening in 1976 to 1978). As is often the case, this is the B-side being a fine ballad, ‘I Need Your Love’ being the official topside. J BARBARA MASON YOU BETTER STOP IT ARCTIC 154 M- 250 A huge pity that Barbara couldn’t entertain us at this year’s Blackpool Soul Festival – next year with a bit of luck. Here we offer easily her rarest Arctic 45 and a crossover gem. Probably a bit rarer on stock copy, mostly seems to be promos that crop up for sale. K HOLLIDAYS I LOST YOU GROOVE CITY M- 700 206 Boy did this group have a complicated history, especially as they had little in the way of hits. This particular release (with mis-spelt name) came after LeBaron Taylor and Don Davis split. Dave then formed his own label and put out this previously unreleased side on the group. The flipside ‘Easy Living’ is actually Steve Mancha. L DONNELL BROWN TOO LATE TO CRY BROWN & M- 250 BROWN 101 Two great sides from 1971 out of Los Angeles. Unusually for the City of Angels at the time this is a non-Monarch pressed vinyl release (rather than styrene). Again, difficult to decide which side to go with so we’ve ‘soundbitten’ both. ‘Too Late To Cry’ actually has a $1.00 sticker on it – it will most likely remove if you don’t want reminding of the former price – its from ‘Novotny’s’, whoever they were. M MAJOR HARRIS CALL ME TOMORROW OKEH 7327 VG++ 250 Pretty strong VG++, it appears mint face-on but a slanted viewpoint reveals a few ‘fibreglass’ type marks under strong light. Quite a few discs are like that. Harris and producer Jackie Mills have an interesting little story explained in the latest Soul Up North. N LOUIS CURRY YOU’RE JUST PLAIN NICE REEL 251 M- 300 One-time member of Detroit’s Combinations (Solid Rock), this is his first recording prior to moving to the M-S label and having a minor hit with ‘A Toast To You’. Despite its undoubted quality ‘You’re Just Plain Nice’ certainly was no kind of hit. O OTHELLO ROBERTSON SO IN LUV BABY LUV 0035 M- 365 First label before Era and an incredibly catchy Northern item. Baby Luv Records was owned by singer Harold Andrews and this track hails from 1965. Robertson is supposedly the lead singer of the Inticers on the same label. P BARBARA and the STONEY FACE RUBY-DOO 6 M- 235 CASTLES One of three versions of this song, Mary Love and Vicki Nelson being the others, Mary once told me she hated the song! Perhaps she should have had a go at the brilliant ‘Don’t Hurt Me Baby’ on the flipside (see soundbite). That said, I doubt she could have matched Barbara’s superlative reading. !
