2 Alok Singh MARKET UPDATE CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER

September saw a sharp decline in equity markets. We saw an extreme sell-off in the Mid-cap and Small-cap indices which closed down 15% and 20%, respectively. India ended the third calendar quarter as an underperformer relative to its

Emerging Market peers after delivering significant outperformance in the second calendar quarter.

This sharp decline in Indian equities was driven mainly by local factors. The rally in Brent crude prices, which was up 7% for the month, heightened concerns of inflation spiking higher. Furthermore, the overall sentiment was also impacted over the defaults by IL&FS leading to worries of a potential contagion in the financial markets. The immediate concerns around liquidity may have been addressed with the government intervening by recommending a change in the board of IL&FS to the NCLT.

On the global front, trade wars escalated as US upped the ante and announced further tariffs on a further US $200 bn of

Chinese goods. In response, the Chinese Government withdrew from further negotiations with the US. Also, the Federal

Reserve hiked policy rates, in line with expectations.

Looking ahead, we expect a constant flow of information over the next few months starting with 4th quarter earnings which may provide some respite to the current decline in equity markets. In addition to the ongoing IL&FS saga, rising oil prices, depreciating currency and finally the elections in five states will keep the equity markets on its toes.

However, we believe it is a good time to re-look in quality growth stocks which have suffered disproportionately more than they deserved.
