DESCRIPTION

Muckle Wood – 148.04 Hectares / 365.81 Acres

Muckle Wood is a single medium-scale block of conifer woodland, which has been managed for timber production. It was established over two years - 1988 and 1989. It is, therefore, approximately about 32 years’ old and approaching the time when harvesting should be considered. Under the Long Term Forest Plan there is approval to harvest 44.80 hectares on the eastern boundary this year.

The woodland is located on the gentle slopes of the hill range running between Beinn Odhar and Cromlet. It lies on a north-south orientation between altitudes of 180m and 350m above sea level. The climate in the region is well- suited to the growth of conifer species.

The crop has two main components. The lower compartments, numbers 1-7, are planted in pure Sitka spruce, while the higher ground, compartments 8–12, is a mixture of Sitka spruce and Lodgepole pine. There are minor elements of Japanese larch, but these are of limited extent.

The crop quality is good in parts, with estimated Yield Class up to 18, this varies throughout the property based on soil condition and drainage. The crops are summarised in the species table below. A full compartment schedule is available upon request from the Selling Agents.
