FCPL.ORG 3 FREDERICK READS FREDERICK WELCOMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR, RHODES SCHOLAR, AND DECORATED VETERAN

Acclaimed, bestselling author Wes Moore will appear as the 2020 speaker for Frederick Reads, a collaborative effort between Frederick County Public Libraries, Frederick Community College, and the Weinberg Center for the Arts.

His moving life journey from wayward inner city youth in Baltimore to decorated combat veteran, Rhodes Scholar, White House fellow, social entrepreneur, and business leader is depicted in the New York Times bestselling memoir, The Other Wes Moore. The book tells the story of how educational opportunities, strong parental influence, mentors, and a community support network helped the author transcend the fate of a man with the same name who lived just a few blocks away and took a tragically different path to prison.

In 2014, Moore produced a three-part series on PBS entitled Coming Back with Wes Moore. The series explored the challenges faced by US military veterans returning home.

His latest work will be released in March 2020. Five Days: The Fiery Reckoning of an American City is a kaleidoscopic account of five days in the life of a city on the edge, told through seven characters on the frontlines of the protests that overtook Baltimore and riveted the world in 2015.

See page 24 for additional programming in support of Frederick Reads.

Monday, April 20, 2020; 7 p.m. Weinberg Center for the Arts Tuesday, April 21, 2020; 11:15 a.m. Jack B. Kussmaul Theater, Frederick Community College

Both appearances will be open to the public at no cost. Tickets are required and will be available on March 10. For tickets, visit the Weinberg Center website or box office.

This event invites people to check out human “books” who have experienced prejudice and discrimination. Readers can hear the first-hand stories of those who are often stereotyped and come to understand the human side of their experience. Our 2019 Human Library featured books with experience working in the army, growing up motherless, converting to Mormonism, and a world traveler.

A BOOK BY ITS COVER MEET LISAH, THE MOST CHECKED-OUT BOOK FROM OUR 2019 HUMAN LIBRARY AND A FEATURED BOOK IN OUR 2020 COLLECTION. What made you want to become a “book” in the Human Library? Too often, transgender people are typecast by portrayals of them on TV, like RuPaul’s Drag Race. The general public only witnesses one slice of the transgender spectrum, not realizing most are just regular people like you and me. I wanted to be an open book and humanize transgender people. What did you enjoy most about the experience? One of the most interesting conversations I had was with a tutor who was about to take on a new student who was trans. She had a lot of questions about how she could make her student feel comfortable and safe so that she could provide the same educational experience that she gives all of her students. What was the hardest question you were asked? I wouldn’t say there were hard questions but one of the best questions that I was asked was, “What are the questions I shouldn’t ask?” The person who asked this had never met someone like me, and they wanted to respect my All of the books privacy while still having an open conversation, which I really I appreciated. here want to What advice would you give to a future book or reader? be read. I would tell books to be proud of their story and open with sharing their experiences. For readers, I would say don’t be afraid to read something different.
